Microsoft Files New Battletoads Trademark

Is the classic platformer franchise making a comeback?

No Caption Provided

Microsoft has filed a new trademark application for Battletoads, suggesting--but absolutely not confirming--that the Xbox company may be planning to revive the series in some fashion.

The trademark application, spotted by NeoGAF, was filed with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) on November 5. It covers "game software" and "online video games."

The Battletoads series was created by British developer Rare, and was originally released for the NES in 1991. Microsoft acquired Rare in 2002, and the Battletoads series has been dormant for years.

Could the trademark application mean Microsoft is looking to bring Battletoads back to modern consoles? Maybe, but Microsoft has not announced any plans to date. Filing a trademark application doesn't guarantee a future game release, as Microsoft could just be protecting the name, should it want to make a new game some day.

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "Microsoft often acquires various trademarks as part of its ongoing business strategy, but beyond that we have no comment."

If the Battletoads series were to return, what would you like to see? Let us know in the comments below.

I want to see an entire battletoads game with snes graphics but still 2d. The same difficulty maybe with infinite continues from the start of the level and maybe a few save slots so someone can pick it back up at the level they quit at

Awesome, it would be great to see a comeback, BUT, it should be also VERY difficult, without saves, cheats, stupid help and all the BS that ruins games nowadays!!!!

It would be great if Rare did make a return to Battletoads. Rare hasn't quite been used to it's potential since Microsoft bought them. An Xbox One game of Battletoads could be on the way?

Hope it doesn't suck, like Microsoft did to Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie.

The market is accepting to beat em up/ platformers so it would be a wise time to revive this IP.

Guacamelee & Dragon's Crown sold insanely well /just naming a few.

If they intend to do the original justice then the Dark Souls games are in trouble...!

Avatar image for RSM-HQ

<< LINK REMOVED >> Dark Souls ain't even hard; only considered so with them gamers born in 2006+.

With that said I do like a good Souls game :P

Playable characters for the next Gears of War.

That way maybe the story will make more sense.

They will bring back the Turbo Tunnel and it will be two times harder - I am ready for this O_O

This was one of the only legitimately good NES games I could never beat.

I got close. I got damn close..... I suppose if I had owned the game instead of borrowed it I would have eventually succeeded.

Anyway, I doubt Microsoft can do the original justice.

@Erebus Spelunker was probably my favourite game on the Nes. Followed by Mario 3. Ninja Gaiden being the most brutal.

Why do you say that? They did a pretty damn good job with Killer Instinct. They just need to find the right developer for it that's all.

<< LINK REMOVED >> A lot of what was passable in the NES era will not fly in today's gaming climate. For example, a level from Battletoads such as the Turbo Tunnel would be seen as repetitive and difficult for difficulty sake and lacking in creative gameplay... That analysis would be correct in today's gaming world.

On the other hand, if there were a shorter, easier version of it in the next Battletoads, then it would be criticized for dumbing-down the experience.... also a rightful criticism.

In other words, it would take genuine talent to successfully translate Battletoads to the modern era, talent I don't think Microsoft knows how to find.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Toads doesn't need to translate to the modern era. Trying to make it do so would ruin it - not trying to recreate it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Dark Souls, Rogue Legacy, Splunky, and Super Meat Boy are just a few examples of really hard games that demand extreme patience and require tons of repetition. They have done well in the modern era of gaming.

If anything, a $15-$20 digital release of a brand new Battletoads game that is tough as hell sounds just about perfect in the current gaming climate.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Killer instinct is good but it is not Battletoads fighting games are easy to make compared to beat em ups.

Avatar image for RSM-HQ

<< LINK REMOVED >> Fighting games are not easy to make dood. That's why they spend years in Arcades being balanced.

And it will probably be another Kinect game, lol. Rare suck.

This couldn't possible end poorly.

PUCK YES, would buy, +1, 10/10.

Are you kids actually this dumb?

"Online game" means nothing. You have to file an "online game" trademark if you want internet co op. That's harmless.

Avatar image for davillain-

Oh shut up.

Avatar image for grenadehh

Approach this, of course, with about 30000 grains of salt. A game being brought back to life by a completely different developer 20+ years after it was cool (Strider was actually quite good as well as Ninja Gaiden).

<< LINK REMOVED >> 30,000? seems like you're being pretty optimistic about it. :P

Avatar image for scatterbrain007

I hope it's for the arcade port. That game rocked all kinds of ass.

Avatar image for HAZCHEM88

It wasn't enough they had to kill, gut, stuff and mount Rare.

Yep that's my isane-bishop :-P
