The idea of a new platformer from Rare, who in their heyday made Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie, "would be great", according to Microsoft studios president Phil Spencer.

In a conversation on Twitter, Spencer discussed the platform genre and pointed toward Press Play's upcoming Xbox 360 and Xbox One title Max: The Curse of the Brotherhood, then mentioned the long-dormant Banjo series.

A desire to resurrect Banjo has also been expressed by Rare. "We've got ideas for most older Rare IP, you won't be surprised to hear. There's quite a lot of desire to do that, and Viva Pinata, Conker... Banjo's very popular internally, a lot of people want to do stuff with Banjo," said Rare's Simon Woodroffe in an interview with CVG back in August.

Microsoft handed development duties of a new entry in the Killer Instinct series, created by Rare, to Double Helix Games. The Xbox One maker acquired Rare in 2002, with the developer initially producing Grabbed by the Ghoulies and a remake of Conker's Bad Fur Day for the original Xbox. Rare was then instrumental to the launch of the Xbox 360, and was behind launch titles Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero.

It later developed Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, but is more well-known these days as the studio behind the Kinect Sports series. Kinect Sports Rivals is due for release in 2014.

When it comes to resurrecting Microsoft IP, Spencer has also said multiple times in the past that he'd like to see a Crackdown 3.
