Mojang, the Sweden-based developer of Minecraft, has been acquired by Microsoft for a fee of around $2.5 billion.

In a blog post to fans, Mojang suggested the deal would not result in the deletion of Minecraft games and apps available on non-Microsoft devices.

"There’s no reason for the development, sales, and support of the PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft to stop," the studio wrote.

"Of course, Microsoft can’t make decisions for other companies or predict the choices that they might make in the future."

Microsoft said one key reason for the acquisition is "we believe in the power of content to unite people". It added that it expects the acquisition "to be break-even in FY15 on a GAAP basis." That means it expects to make the money back by April 2016.

Notably, Microsoft says that it expects the acquisition "to be break-even in FY15 on a GAAP basis." In other words, Microsoft believes it will make back what it has spent on Mojang and Minecraft by the end of this fiscal year (next June).

The software giant wrote: "Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms. Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms--including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC."

Moving on

Minecraft creator Markus Persson, who owns 70 percent of the company, stands to make $1.75 billion from the deal (although how much of this is in cash, and how much is in shares, is unknown for now).

Markus Persson stands to make $1.75 billion from the deal
Markus Persson stands to make $1.75 billion from the deal

Persson, along with chief executive Carl Manneh and co-founder Jakob Porser, will be leaving the company.

Mojang's letter to fans explained that Persson never intended to have "the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance".

It added: "Over the past few years he’s made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang. He'll continue to do cool stuff though. Don't worry about that."

Mojang claimed that there "are only a handful of potential buyers with the resources to grow Minecraft on a scale that it deserves."

Minecraft has sold more than 50 million units across console, PC, smartphones and tablets. But it was Mojang's partnership with Microsoft for the Xbox 360 edition that forged ties between the two companies.

"We’ve worked closely with Microsoft since 2012, and have been impressed by their continued dedication to our game and its development," the studio wrote.

"We’re confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in an awesome way."

Xbox head Phil Spencer added: "We respect the brand and independent spirit that has made Minecraft great, and we’ll carry on the tradition of innovation to move the franchise forward. Our investments in cloud, Xbox Live and mobile technology will enable players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect with the Minecraft community."

In other related developments;

  • Mojang says it is not sure on the future of its Scrolls games project.
  • The studio adds that it does not have insight into Microsoft's future for Minecraft
  • The Minecon event has not been cancelled and will be organised by Microsoft
  • Microsoft says Minecraft Xbox 360 edition has clocked up two billion hours played in the past two years

That's the great american "victory" when they brainwashed the population with the socialist ghost. Big business can do pretty much whatever it wants, but god forbid if the regular citizen wan't to self-organize.

how the hell are they meant to remake the 2.5 billion by 2016 do they mean the whole Microsoft will make that much or they will make that much just for owning this developer? because mine craft sold 50 million and costs like $20 to buy so they would of made like 1 billion dollars from mine craft and that would of been over multiple years so how the hell do they expect to make over twice as much as that in 1.5 years? especially when they probably will never make a game as successful as mine craft ever again?

Bluntly, this move is totally incomprehensible. I wouldn't spend even a single million dollar on such a game. Minecraft is like going back 30 years in time, going back to the first Atari and Intellivision. Instead of firing employees by ten of thousands they could've created something in that spirit if they wanted that type of games. Doesn't anyone realize what a single billion dollar is? You could feed countries with that type of money.

They won't. Buying Minecraft for $2.5B is tax deductible, it's called charity.

I love how people who probably don't even know personal finances always say rich people get richer because of "tax deductions." It's really simple. You pay a percentage of your income in taxes, so you only get a fraction of the money you give as a tax deduction. It's a net loss if you're just trying to increase your bank account.

First of all I hope that when someone says paying $2.5B for Minecraft falls under the concept of charity is understood as a joke. There nothing humanitarian in such a move. Secondly no one is getting richer by paying taxes but many are getting richer in *not* paying any, or evading a maximum in shenanigans. It's all about fiscal paradises or moving from a pocket to another, declaring as expenses money you throw on yourself and so on. I do hope its not necessary to elaborate on things so evident.

I can imagine Microsoft cutting future support for other platforms except Xbox/PC/Windows Phone.

But I find it more likely that they continue selling even on competitive platforms. It's like how Microsoft pays royalties for each Xbox One sold to Sony for the Blu-ray drive; Microsoft would be getting paid for every Minecraft sold on a PlayStation, Android, iOS, Steam, and Linux device.

@elheber like how Sony pays royalties to use Windows OS on each of their PC's?...that's just something businesses have to do sometimes. MS keeping Mine craft on other devices would be the smartest move...it's already through the development process on other devices now it's just money making time.

Also...I wasn't making this out to sound like an argument. I agree completely with you...just trying to point out to others this kind of shit happens in business

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree! We might be getting into a bit of mutual cooperation here; whilst the fanboys are arguing about everything, the companies may be finding ways to work with each other whilst making exclusive franchises on their own terms. It just so happens that Microsoft is still lagging behind in new franchises right now.

After watching the video, this announcement doesn't seem quite as rage-inducing as it initially appeared. Spencer seems to be quite genuine in putting across that they want to work on expanding Minecraft even further and that's across all platforms, not just Xbox. I guess they did learn their lesson in that regard with the Rise of the Tomb Raider backlash. With that said, I'm hoping that Microsoft will eventually realise that they need new franchises to win people over. The deal will probably result in new features for Minecraft coming out on Xbox first and little more.

Good deal for him. That's a lot of money for actually not much relatively speaking. And a really bad move from Microsoft in my opinion, as I imagine a lot of people are going to leave the community now. It's not "cool" now that it's owned by a global conglomerate, and I sound sarcastic but I can sympathise with that feeling, knowing that everything you create is now under a giant boot heel at all times, but hey, I don't blame Notch from passing up the opportunity to become a multi-billionaire.

He should change his name to Richard, because he just became Big Rich Persson.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Right, except that's not really true.

XP was good.

Vista was bad.

7 was great.

8 was bad.

8.1 is good.

This is the general consensus among the tech community, and that's not what a downhill slide looks like.

Office 2013 is sort of a disgrace in principle, but before that, Office 2010 was their best work, and one hell of a product to boot..

I can't comment on the 360 not having owned one, and the Xbox One is a not-terrible product marketed terribly, but since marketing is not a concern here, I don't really see the problem. Then again, I don't fully understand the "cool" problem either, although it certainly seems to make sense in a more immediate way.

But that's besides the point; if you stop and think for a second, they clearly don't "ruin their stuff". Maybe think about *why* you believe the things you do.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's very true, although I think if you really knew the vastness of the changes that were introduced (but not appreciated) in Vista, you'd might not be so confident in the relevance of that angle.

It wasn't until 7 came along and people had (almost) gotten used to the new annoyances of Vista and the compatibility and performance stuff had been tuned and patched up that people actually said, "Hey all this new stuff (we had before) is really cool!" and it deservedly got *universal* praise from the tech community.

In Windows there are *hundreds* of things that you and I won't use or possibly even notice, but that are hugely important to a large number of that 1,000,000,000+ market. The first properly executed 64 bit support on a widely-known platform for example was something a lot of people complained about, but we needed it, we just didn't know we needed it, and that compatibility sh!tstorm *was going* to happen sooner or later, and Microsoft just had to walk out with their hands up and suffer the mob on that one.

You can't blame Notch for his choice. The dude wanted to make small games but couldn't because he could ruin a game that had become larger than he. He wanted to make indie games and you can't be indie if you control arguably the largest game in the history of games.
