Microsoft committed to providing offline, single-player experiences on Xbox One

The Xbox One will take full advantage on its online capabilities, but single-player "remains a conerstone of gaming."

Although the Xbox One may have originally required a constant Internet connection, Microsoft says they’ve always been committed to providing high-quality offline experiences as well.

“Single-player gameplay remains a cornerstone of gaming,” said Microsoft’s Phil Spencer in an interview with GameSpot. “Looking at this last year, my personal game of the year right now is Brothers. I thought it was just a fantastic XBLA game this summer. I had a great time, and it wasn’t an online game at all. [Microsoft] will continue to invest in those games. I have a controller in my hand, I’m looking at a screen, I don’t need to compete with somebody, I don’t need a leaderboard, I just simply want to play through the game.”

However, even with experiences that remain primarily offline, Spencer doesn’t rule out supplementing them with online options when appropriate. “It’s true that for some of those games, if you have a connection, they might take advantage of that in some way, and I don’t see that as a bad thing.” But the “heart and the soul” of a single-player game remains in providing a quality experience “when you’re sitting on your couch playing….Even a game like Forza, with 16-player multiplayer. If pulling the gas trigger and hitting the brake and steering don’t feel great, whether I”m connected or disconnected, the game’s going to fail."

“Having great single-player games for people that are disconnected, purely disc-based customers, will be a huge part of our business," said Spencer. "We’ll continue to support that. And we’re signing games today where the heart and soul of that game is an offline experience. If there are connected experiences [the developers] want to augment in the game itself, I think that’s great, but so many games really live or die based on how much fun you have with...the single-player experience.”

orly? you don't even develop games anymore. your commitment was to the game publishers who wanted the always-online and you took the fall for them.

I never play any multiplayer. I enjoy a good single player game without having to deal with online gaming "elitists", whinning brats if you use a different strategy as them, and racists.

Sudeki wasn't bad. The problem was it felt rushed. If they did do a sequel, it will be interesting to see.

Almost every action adventure game I've played has been single player, and will be in next gen too. I don't see that this is news.

I'm kind of in the in between... I like single player straight store experiences, but mostly I like couch co-op experience, playing a game through with my brother. Many games are released and they now only offer online co-op.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Couch co-op is win. Had a blast playing Resident Evil 5 with my girlfriend. Then Borderlands 1/2. Gears of War 1, 2, and 3, and recently Dragon's Crown and Diablo III. Hope there are plenty of fun games with local co-op, as well. There's just something lost when you're playing with some random person online.

SP is why I started gaming and why I would continue gaming as long as they continue to support the SP world out there. But, if they expect me to pay $60 for an SP mode 5 hours long in a MP game like COD or BF4, they're wrong. I'll stay with fewer purchases for directed SP player games. It seems like the console companies, and some developers, are pushing all this social gaming crap philosophy! Well, I don't game to make friends, I've already got plenty and can actually go to coffee, lunch, or dinner with them. Sorry, just the truth. I'm playing to play, that's it.

As for playing indie or arcade games, I've yet to see or find one that actually interested me. They all seem to shallow or low quality from what I like.

@charlieholmes I don't mind online modes in games, I just hate when online play is required for single-player game elements. Galactic readiness in Mass Effect 3, for example. Horrible idea, hope I don't see anything like it next-gen. Opt-in ideas like invasions in Dark Souls or the Ur-Dragon/Pawns in Dragon's Dogma are much better.

You're right! I don't mind the online modes either for FPS games and do play them some but I gotta do it in moderation or else I feel like I'm on crack or something by the time I finish. But, I've also got PTSD, which may be why I just can't hang with the MP long. I don't know for sure though why. SP doesn't have any affect on me and allows me to relax and get lost in story and the game which has really been why I play games. But, the MP competition is fun all be it to a very limited amount for me. There are many other styles of MP games I can enjoy some as long as they are not FPS.

M$ always goes for the money . It would definitely have gone for an always-online connection if nobody had made a complain. That is where money is. Then, It would be able to control everything and we would be a slave of this blood sucking corporation.

We all know M$ just purposely put a leaked news on the alway-on connection to get the feedback. When everyone turned against this idea, M$ rapidly replied it always listened to a consumer and had a plan to support offline at the first place. That was bull--shit!!!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The original idea to be alway online is terrible. It shouldn't have thought about this disgusting idea at the first place if it had not a blood sucking corporation. Oh, I forgot to talk about the other purposely leaked news on NO used games allowed. It said people couldn't buy a used one to play anymore because M$ couldn't suck money on a used game market. Do you still remember this news? It is absolutely unethical and inmoral to think only on their side.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I really like Steam, only for big discount. For me, PC is a part of my work and a daily life. I mainly use it for my work, browse the internet, and entertainment like playing games, watching movies, editing video, and listening to music. To always stay connect with Steam to play game is not a problem for me because I connect it anyway for other stuffs.

In contract, for console, I just use it for entertainment only. I'm not an online multiplayer gamer as well. I don't need to connect internet at all if not for firmware updated or new download content. Maybe I am not a target customer group. I am an off-line single player not online gamer, so obligating me on staying online is a really bad thing to happen. I cannot make a console related to Steam at this moment even though steam like model will come to a living room in a near future.

Actually ms was going to,support used games. But ms when for the, steam like model because people seemed to,like steam. It was not about being anit consumer. It was just the opposite it was more about pleasing the consumer as the consumers seemed to love steam. Hell i like steam. And would of excepted a steam like model on console purly for the crazy discounts that come with it but most people though it was about being anti consumer but then that was all on ms for not putting enough information out so then people did not understand what was happening so put there own spins on it.

I'm not a big fan of multiplayer driven games. I'd take a Fallout New Vegas over any multiplayer game any time any where.

Just how long have you believed this M$ ?. Months ago you were determined to have always online yet now you suddenly say that single player is important to you ?, you have to try to make this more believable M$....right now it sounds like another desperate attempt to sell the console. If we are so important then why not prove it ?, tell us why your changing your stance now just before launch and why you believe single players are so important when you were saying the exact opposite afew months ago.
Right now, it looks like more BS.

Requiring people to do an online check just to play their games didn't seem very offline friendly.

It's kind of funny that single player games have become the token black friends for Microsoft, " I don't hate single player games! One of my favorite games is Brothers!" sounds a whole like "I don't hate black people! one of my best friends is black!".

please tell me what you can actually do if you don't have online and live. so far i can only see playing music/movies and playing a few offline games and nothing else. if you dont have live on the xbone then its the same as being offline cause of all the pay wall thats just crazy, at least the ps4 (without psn) lets you share gameplay, use the browser, play offline, music/movies + online movies (like lovefilm and online music). there so much more stuff then the xbone.

Yeah yeah, keep covering the shit from several months ago. They would have kept all their restrictions if it didn't cause such an uproar. An "offline experience" isn't something you should have to show off, it should just be given.

What about with the Deal with it attitude, I guess the pre orders must've been lesser and so the sales will be lower therefore instead of consumers the Mircroshaft has to deal with their attitude and listen to consumers rantting for offline experience. now remove the kinect please, because kinect doesn't look good with my tv setup.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If you have been paying attention which is clear you have not, the people with deal with it attitude got the boot. Microsoft just got through a major restructuring of their entire company. There is a new person in charge of the xbox division and there is more over sight than earlier in the year. The former head of xbox is now the ceo of Zynga. One of the idiots who told people to deal with it was forced to resign. Finally for good or for bad. You don't have to hook up the kinect if you don't want to. I agree its bad they don't have a kinectless xbox one but you don't have to use the one provided. You need to get a clue on what you are talking about before you start trolling.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Microsoft was smart for cutting the stupid out as far as personnel was concerned. Telling your consumer to just "Deal With It" when plenty of alternatives were available is just the picture of stupid. On the other hand, I don't see how you can defend a bundled peripheral. The Kinect 2.0 might be cool, fine, but it's patently not necessary for the functioning of the Xbox One, and it's an experience (and expense) many gamers just don't want. It would have been smart to offer a Kinect-less Xbox One for $100 less rather than force many gamers to shell out the money for something they don't care to buy.
