Microsoft clarifies Xbox One used game stance

Xbox maker acknowledges "confusion" exists around secondhand games for next-gen platform, doesn't deny fee will be required to play secondhand titles.

Microsoft has clarified its stance on used games as it relates to the Xbox One, the company's next-generation platform.

No Caption Provided

Writing on his blog, Microsoft director of Xbox Live programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb acknowledged that some "confusion" over used games on the next-gen platform has arisen today.

"We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we've confirmed today," Hryb said. "While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail."

"Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios."

Earlier today, a Wired report claimed the Xbox One would require secondhand users pay a fee to play used games. Hryb did not deny this in his statement today, saying only that there will be no fee for those who play their games at a friend's house, provided they sign in to their profile.

"Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend's house--should you choose to play your game at your friend's house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile," he said.

A fee like this really doesn't bother me, I don't buy used games and quite frankly I don't care if game retailers lose their pre-owned cash cow.

People seem to think that this is going to cost MS money but I'm not sure. Currently the game industry only makes money on new sales, pre-owned only makes money for the retailer, so if they discourage the purchase of pre-owned games they regain the market they lose to them.

@Kraken422 It will be hard measure the impact of this individual feature. But let me ask you:

you said you don't buy second hand. but do you sell? What do you do to those games you finished, or didn't like?
Directly, only when we see the results for the first game sales will it be possible to know. But indirectly, it's impossible to quantify how many users will they loose because of this feature, or how many will stop buying at release day and rather wait for a price drop (because they can't recover part of the investment), for example.

@The_Beanster @Kraken422 true but like used game sales the dev and MS don't see any money from them so I doubt they really care if you can't buy used or rent. Then you would have to buy new and they get money from the sale of the game.

@dragonkantus @Kraken422 And, knowing it will come packed with a Blu-Ray disc, most games are going to be on Blu-Ray as well. Means that each game can come packed with as much as 25GB, if not 50GB of game content (considering dual-layer), the hard disk can only handle 10 to 20 games, based on the overall size of the games.

It's like they're trying to dig themselves out of a hole full of sand. No matter how much sand they try to dig themselves out of, the hole keeps filling with even more sand and the hole just gets bigger and bigger.

I tried to think of the last time that I bought a used game, but then my nose started bleeding and I passed out. If they can continue making digital distribution more affordable (more "Steam-esque"), I really don't care too much about a used game fee.

I wonder if the game devs would see any of the used game fee...doubt it.

@FAIL_TR0LL I don't buy used games often, but I do share games back and forth with friends frequently. That's busted too with this.

And in my mind it's the principle that matters. It's like people saying that always online doesn't matter because they have good internet. That's not the point. The point is that M$ is actively implementing things with their console that hurt consumers, and they expect you to just bend over and take it.

That sucks. Amazon.com has been amazing lately - putting games that are only a few weeks old on sale for $40. That's the route that I've been taking recently.

@FAIL_TR0LL Now there's something I agree with. Steam know how to treat a guy right ;)

But seriously, Microsoft need to make their digital copies cheaper (because as they stand, they're actually more expensive than physical copies for some reason) and they need to have better sales. They also need to bring back family accounts.

If they do all that, I probably won't care about it either.

But seriously MS if you are doing this because of rising development costs then let's just wait until it becomes cheaper to make these sort of games/consoles. I mean Blocking used games??? Basically we dont really own the product. We are just borrowing it.

I mean even if the games have 20 year old graphics, we would still HAVE them, surely that is preferable over this s***, right?

I am a little put off by this and hope they clear it up as I am an owner of 3 xbox's in my home and three live acounts. I dont want to have to purchase a game three times for each profile to play it. I bought the disc, what I do with it afterward is MY business so long as I dont breath the EULA.

Well what I read from that was that they're not charging a fee for used games?! Weird article, I mean surely they can't? They would clearly lose more money from lost custom than what they'd make back from these fees that no-one would pay.

I was actually really pleased with the announcement, proper TV integration and better multimedia features are exactly what I'm after seeing as my xbox sits in my lounge for everyone in the house to use. Plus they announced pretty much everything that sony has announced so far in terms of features and spec with extra bits thrown in so I'm really struggling to understand the hate. I'll leave the hard core gaming to my PC thank you ;)

I mean a full budget Halo TV series to accompany the new halo?! Christ that's an amazing announcement! People are so hard to please these days

@ghandi16 that's exactly the point. with a fee, it will become a dumb move to buy used.
Used game+tax+fee = new game price.
This is the general idea. They won't get much from the fee itself, but will hinder the used market strongly. Thing is, less people overall playing the game, means less hype, means less people knowing each game, means less DLC's sold.

@ghandi16 No, people aren't hard to please! People just want to OWN what they BUY! If I can't use it as I'm please then its not mine!

I still play my 20 year old Sega Genesis, but 10 years from now Xbox One will be USELESS since I'll not be able to play a new game after live shuts dows (for xbox one like it did to the original xbox) and, if mine console die, I'll lose all games along with it since will not be possible to carry the games to a new console without xbox live.

I can accept that risk with cheap small casual games like xbl arcade, but I can't accept this in full priced games (the ONLY reason I buy a video game console).

If i buy a Xbox One and lets say cod ghosts, I have my own gamertag on my console but also other members of my family will be using the same xbox one with their own gamertags...i am not buying 4 xbox ones for one house and not buying 4 copies of each game just so i can have my own saves on games..........

i was 100% behind xbox even before they announced it but this is a big deal breaker. and i am not missing out on next gen so looks like sony may have just won. never thought i'd say that!

will wait until e3 for clarification on this but if not cleared up properly by then, sony get a pre-order.

am getting fed up of xbox always having some drama around consoles (always online etc..) just be clear and market your product properly!

@basey You wouldn't have to. The game would be available, for no extra cost, to every gamer profile on the original console it's used on. Then, when you took it to your friends house, it doesn't work until your gamer profile is used. Just make sure that you use your own gamer profile the first time you use a new game because it probably requires that specific profile to work on other consoles.

A fun thing that will screw over PC gamers with this
Xbox user, has to pay more for used so first does some research on the game
Goes on his pc, or his parents, borther, sister whatever
Goes to a torrent site to torrent the pc version of the game he/she wants for the xbox
Downloads it installs it plays it, decides if he wants to buy it or not

Sequel of this game : NO OR DELAYED PC VERSION OF IT, TO MUTCH PIRACY ALL PC GAMERS ARE THIEFS!
