Metro: Last Light coming to Mac, Linux

Deep Silver reveals Mac version will launch on September 10, while Linux iteration coming later in the year; Metro franchise will "absolutely continue," says CEO.

Deep Silver and 4A Games announced today that a Mac version of Metro: Last Light will arrive on September 10, while a Linux iteration will be released later in the year.

No Caption Provided

In a statement, 4A Games chief technology officer Oles Shishkovstov said bringing the first-person shooter to Mac and Linux is "further testimony to the power and flexibility" of the studio's proprietary 4A Engine.

The Mac and Linux versions of Metro: Last Light are in development at 4A Games.

Metro: Last Light on Steam will support Steam Play and will receive the same downloadable content as the PC and console versions.

Separately, Deep Silver CEO Dr. Klemens Kundratitz told Joystiq that purchasing the Metro franchise during the THQ bankruptcy auction for $5.9 million has been a "positive experience" and said the franchise will continue.

"I'm very glad we acquired that brand," Kundratitz said. "While it launched in a very dry space in the gaming calendar this year, it still got a lot of attention. Our ambition is to absolutely continue with that brand and we will also, in the next phase, look to making it more accessible for a broader gamer audience."

I'm glad that mainstream developers are paying more and more attention to Linux. Took awhile, but it's finally happening. Keep it up! Can't wait to afford being able to build a Linux gaming machine so that I can support ya'll with my wallet!

Amazing. The moment you guys read MAC, a battle ensued. But nothing is said about "look to making it more accessible for a broader gamer audience".

Get your priorities straight people!!

I played this game until the heavy anti communist propaganda started. That's when I realized I'm playing a very political game masked under this entertainment form of gaming. F**k this Putin loving captalist game. This is always the case when foreigners wanna impress americans and take their business to the next level. They create these stupid themes that belong in the cold war era, to appeal the american market. It is shameful to see, after giving birth to great men like Lenin, it now 2013 spits out intellectual psychopath garbage like Metro Last Light. F**k this game and its creators.

That desperate for money? Sometimes it's better to just let things be the way they are. Metro: Last Light will never be that popular, no matter how many platforms you release it on. Just a waste of time and resources.

PC is best for gaming but that's about it. I had a software engineering lab this summer and I cannot describe my absolutely loathing of Windows. Mac (and Linux) has a far superior OS.

Most Mac users probably could not handle this that well, but good to hear it is coming to both linux and mac. I would love to use linux, but it just does not have the games.

My question is how they're going to pull off the Mac version. I use both Windows and Mac, both on the same MacBook Pro (2.2GHz i7, 8GB DDR3, 750GB 5400RPM (250 for Windows, rest for Mac), Radeon HD 6750M 1GB), and stuff looks fantastic on the Windows partition, but if I put it on Mac, depending on the game, it'll either run the same (a good port) or complete ass (slapping WINE on it or just sucking at coding).

Whatever they add to make it more accesible in future iterations, please, make it optional or don't let it ruin the marvelous Single Player quality you pulled some times times now.

Linux support is great and I will probably buy it even though I am not a big fan of FPS' but I loved the original Metro. Since Steam was released, the number of available games have multiplied so we have to thank Valve for this as well.

Mac and also Linux are looking better and better as alternatives to Windows gaming as time goes by.

Also, I see that the Deep Silver are deep into that whole "making it more accessible for a broader gamer audience" mentality, which hopefully doesn't ruin anything, although it's always worrying when a company says that.

@Hurvl Totally in agreement with the last part of your comment. Hopefully they don't force 4A Games to make any changes to the gameplay. All they need to do is promote future installments better.

@Jay2528 @Hurvl Making it "more accessible" could mean something as simple as adding one more difficulty-level that simplifies things or adds some HUD-element to help you to your next objective.

My point is that "more accessible" can be done in a gazillion different ways and not all of those ways screw the game for the rest of us, ie. it can be done well or it can be done EA-style.

@Jay2528 @WereCatf @Hurvl I'm quite sure that once the Linux-version is announced they'll see a sudden bump in their sales. Linux-enthusiasts are quite eager to show support to companies that go to the extra length to release a Linux-version. And that bump will hopefully encourage them even further :)

@WereCatf @Jay2528 @Hurvl True enough, as long as the core gameplay is left intact though I will not have any problems. I am just glad that we will get a sequel though as I really enjoyed Last Light but was afraid it had not sold enough to get one.

I never beat it. Great game and was very unsettling. A fantastic dark world. I hope they don't ruin the franchise by trying to make it more 'accessible'. More than likely they will force 4A to add a multiplayer instead of making a great one player experience.

Well, now there is no excuse to own a linux based pc.

many whined about not being able to find the patches for games and such

hopefully this means more developers will dive in to other windows free alternatives

If it's easy enough to get up and running under Linux I'd give it a shot. I'm trying to work with Linux more but it's obnoxiously difficult when I can't game on it. I can't justify switching OSes every time I want to play a game.

@jinzo9988 Well, the Linux-version will be released under Steam, so installing it will be just as easy as installing anything else via Steam. Or do you mean you cannot get Steam installed?

@WereCatf @jinzo9988 I haven't tried. Linux is a Google language for me. It seems like every time I want to do something with the OS, I have to Google it. It comes with the territory of learning something, but I feel like a lot of things are more difficult than they need to be.

I'm in college training to be a network/sys admin so I'm taking a bunch of Linux courses. It's advantageous for me to be on the OS more, but when my hobby pretty much kicks Linux to the curb, it's too much of a pain to try and use it on a leisurely basis.

We use Fedora for the courses and all the machines have OpenSUSE imaged in. I've used Linux Mint at home because of how clean the UI is.

@jinzo9988 @WereCatf The Steam installer comes preloaded with SolydK. Otherwise, I think Steam can be found in the repositories that Mint uses (probably the Ubuntu repos).

Yes, Linux takes a lot of getting used to when coming from a Windows environment. That's just how it is. Linux gives more control to the user, whereas Windows and OSX like to do things in a way that masks all the advanced features in order to make it easier to use. The easier they make it, the more automated it becomes. The more automated it is, the less control the users have.

@jinzo9988 @WereCatf I see. Well, Steam, once installed, works more-or-less just the same as it does under Windows, so you just download and install games there just as you would otherwise. So, I would suggest you start with installing Steam :)

Also, if you want to play games that aren't available as native Linux-binaries there are a few different tools available that might work for running Windows-games. I'm sure you have heard of Wine, but CrossOver is a commercial version of Wine that includes various wizards and the likes to make installing Windows-apps and games much easier.

Do let me know if you need more help or would like to discuss things more.

Great news for all the Mac users out there (and Linux). Personally, I do have a Mac, but I barely use it. My gaming PC is my main rig, but not everyone does have a gaming Windows-machine, so it's good to hear that they'll be able to play this great game too.
