Of the two handheld puzzle games Q Entertainment released in 2005, Lumines for the PlayStation Portable has by far proven to have the longest legs. As the other, Meteos for the Nintendo DS, was by and large left on the bench, Lumines was transformed into a bona fide franchise. The rhythm-flavored puzzler was first ported to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade, and subsequently went on to see a sequel proper on the PSP and a redux of the original for the PlayStation 2, among other extensions of the brand.

Q Entertainment isn't quite done with the Meteos franchise yet, though. Following on from its Disney-themed revival last year, the Japanese gaming company announced today a brand-new installment in the series is headed to Xbox Live Arcade this October. Titled Meteos Wars, the action puzzle game again sees players defending worlds by stacking, linking, and igniting blocks.

Meteos Wars on XBLA will deliver 20 different worlds to defend, and Q promises each will see its own alien race, block style, gravity, and audio and visual effects. The game also includes four new special attacks, as well as a number of play modes, including Mission, Time, and Vs. Meteos Wars will also feature local and online multiplayer for up to two.

When Meteos Wars lands on XBLA this October, Q expects it to cost 800 Microsoft points ($10).
