Metal Slug has returned, but it is a very different game now. Announced during Summer Game Fest's kickoff stream, Metal Slug Tactics is a turn-based tactical strategy game from SNK that resembles Fire Emblem as much as Metal Slug--less "pew pew" and more "think think."

The latest in the very long-running Metal Gear series, Metal Slug Tactics retains the game's classic Neo Geo pixel art style, but it appears to also make use of fully animated cinematics. Destructible environments can be used to get the edge on your enemy.

Now Playing: Metal Slug Tactics | Summer Game Fest 2021

Metal Slug Tactics will feature skill trees and perks along with an adrenaline system that you can use to get the edge on some of the game's more dangerous enemies. It also includes roguelite elements, so you'll have to be at your very best or risk losing some of your progress.

Metal Slug Tactics is very different from the run-and-gun games we're used to in the series, but it still seems to retain that same spirit. We'll know for sure soon enough.

Metal Slug: Tactics is developed by Leikir Studio and Dotemu, the latter of which is also the studio behind Streets of Rage 4. As of now, the game is only confirmed for PC via Steam.
