Metal Gear Survive Story Mode Impressions - No Snakes In Sight

Practical espionage action.

In Metal Gear Survive, you play a custom character who is the physical opposite of Metal Gear Solid 5's Venom Snake. This spin-off is an exercise in constant deprivation, where your stamina is limited and you have to seek out food and water, which you have to cook and purify respectively if you don't want to get sick. This is assuming you have the proper camping tools to begin with, which you have to craft. There's also the matter of zombies infesting key mission areas, in a setting far away from what anyone would call "home". It's new territory for a Metal Gear game both literally and figuratively. And after a four-hour preview session with the single player story mode, plus one multiplayer session, we were left more curious than excited for the full game.

Almost every Metal Gear game has had some supernatural element, but Survive takes things to another level, or another dimension to be precise. Taking place after the events of The Phantom Pain, the soldiers of Mother Base--along with the base itself--find themselves transported through a wormhole into another reality. Tracking down your brothers in arms and finding a way back home is the main goal of the story.

Our demo started in Survive's third chapter, about an hour after the start of the story. Based on our initial missions, you can expect a lot of training-style goals and on-boarding. Collecting motherboards and learning how to gather water felt like chores rather than the more engaging objectives you typically find in a Metal Gear Solid game. At least there were a ton of zombies in key areas to keep us on our toes.

As you try to stay alive, you learn early on that you lack the diverse skills of the Metal Gear protagonists who've earned the codename Snake. Your stamina is grossly in short supply and you start off with only basic melee attacks. And if the the mission requires exploration into the map's foggy sections, you'll also have to manage your oxygen. It's a relief that normal walking speed is sufficient in getting away from zombies, provided you manage your stamina well. It remains to be seen if the undead can run later in the game.

These persistent demands on your well being feed into Metal Gear Survive's crafting component which, if this preview demo was any indication, plays a huge part in the overall experience. As with many other survival games with crafting, what you think you'll need to construct first might not be the most useful gear. And naturally, what you make will be limited by the ingredients you have, leaving you wondering what components should be saved and what should be used immediately.

No Caption Provided

We found that crafting fences--which you can construct instantly, provided you have enough resources--are a huge help in corralling zombies for easy slaying with your starter staff. Depending on how to lure zombies in missions areas, you can reach your objectives without having to killing everyone, although it would be in your best interest to craft more efficient weapons like a machete or handgun. That's because vanquished zombies drop kuban, the currency you spend to level up. Given the wide and diverse skills you can unlock in the Survivor class--the first of four classes--there's the potential that your custom soldier can one day be as talented as Big Boss.

This character progression incentive paired with the appeal of the multiplayer mode is what Konami is hoping will keep players interested in the long run, especially since the story takes only 20 hours to complete. Our brief session with the four-player co-op online mode echoed the base defense aspects of Fortnite, while burdening us with the aforementioned stamina and skill limitations from the story mode. Moreover, we discovered that the zombies in the easiest difficulty are at level 10, whereas our team ranged from levels 2 to 4. We didn't last very long.

No Caption Provided

For as much as we're not yet convinced of the long term appeal of Metal Gear Survive, we have to give what we've seen so far credit for going all in on its demanding survival-centric gameplay. The level of resource gathering and crafting isn't unusual for an open world zombie game, but in the context of the Metal Gear franchise, it's the biggest design departure since Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. It was also comforting to see this spin-off retain some degree of the series' sense of humor, particularly when you send animals through mini wormholes rather than the Fulton balloon system from The Phantom Pain.

Too much of a divergence away from what Metal Gear is... At least 5 was had revolutionary stealth gameplay. This no longer has anything in common with the series.

Dear Konami,

i can forgive you for making shit games that make me regret spending time and money on them

i can forgive you destroying one of my favorite franchises

but i ABSOLUTELY can't and won't forgive you for mistreating your employees and the disrespect you've shown for your developers..

thus i wont be buying anymore of your shit; actually i will be actively discouraging my friends from buying as well.

you can **** off now.

Disgrace for the MGS name. Then again a lot of MGS V was a disgrace for MGS - thanks to Kojima and Konami

@zura_janai: Peace Walker sucked outside of cutscenes. It featured simplified controls, a pointless metagame, horrible mission structure and boss fights that were almost as bad as those present in MGSV.

@johno357: I too made a mistake, as Bog Boss obviously wasn't self-begotten, and held both Solid Fen and Liquid Mire as progeny, possibilities which I initially entertained, but once settled I forgot to accommodate the rest of the sentence to make sense within the context of the lore. Shit happens.

Some of the animations look awful. But why should they bother with details when all they wanted was a TPP reskin that will generate some cash.

Hopefully they'll make it as laughable and cringey as Twin Snakes so it can truly separate itself from the main series.

So the story is poop also just like mgsv. I cant believe they killed this franchise this badly. While casuals hated mgs4 alottttttttt of core metal gear fans loved it and part 5 is a shell of itself and this is a travesty I cant explain it. What is wrong with konami if they release an alt universe spin off game true to metal gear I hope the story is good or if they continue with big boss again please fix the story and pacing bring back the heavy cutscenes and movie like script

@Archangel2222: 5 isnt the best game ever but it wasnt terrible lol.

It is pretty pointless story wise in the metal gear universe and i think thats because Konami (and some of the fanbase) was forcing Kojima to make another Metal Gear, despite the story being done and him wanting to move on.

But it is still a good game that deserves to share the Metal Gear name. These new games coming out from Konami just look like they are using the Metal Gear name to make a quick buck however.

I think its time to let Metal Gear rest. Konami is going to beat it like a dead horse and we just need to remember it for what it was.

Your best bet at finding another good game like Metal Gear is by following Kojima. He has full creative freedom with Death Stranding and i think it will be the better for it.

It will be a game to surpass metal gear.

@omegasloth: MGSV was the most repetitive, most empty open world game i ever played! Don't get me started on the boring cut scenes of a fake Snake who hardly talks or Quiet (worst MGS character in history) who doesnt talk.

@KillzoneSnake: Well he wasnt an actual Snake but like i said Kojima didnt want to make any more Metal Gears anyway.

He told the story he wanted and when you ask for more games, you get bad ones without the creative inspiration that made the originals so good.

@SythisTaru: hahahahaha, yeah no not even close game was a joke and may as well have been called fulton simulator and been an entire new franchise. story wise offered nothing if it didnt exist you wont miss anything it offered zero things to the franchise. a mute character, dull non existent boss fight. a villian bad guy you never actually take on for the first time, main character that doesnt talk, same mission over and over again and dull open world. yeah no pass on this game over rated for sure still to this day have more fun in the older games than V. replayed all the older games at least 10 times each while part V never touched it once beating it

@Archangel2222: Yah, but it offered me one moment I will never forget. An enemy was walking across the road, and suddenly an enemy Jeep (his team-mate) drove up and hit him. He abruptly stopped the car and got out. He slowly walked over to the body of the man he hit...paused for a second, and then shouted "OH MY GOD! INTRUDER! HQ, HIGH ALERT NOW". I laughed for 4 days straight.

And it'll be £25 on release?

This game pops up in my FB news feed and I have yet to see a single positive comment for it, makes you wonder if the devs are actually reading any of the feedback. This doesn't seem like a game that anyone wants in fact it's the opposite and the majority are actually angry that they even put the metal gear name on it. Konami is clearly out of touch with reality.

MGS died the day Kojima was fired.

Konami will never see another cent from me because of this.

however, I am still very much open to the Gradius series, IF THEY WOULD EVER WORK ON THAT SERIES AGAIN!!!!!

@novaprime1985: was he fired?

How do you know?

His contract period had ended with konami, maybe HE wanted a new direction and was free to do so and left.

Its your decision to boycott the company and the game, however you may be missing out on a deep experience and a good game.

I could be completely ignorant and this will flop and be terrible, imo it looks surprisingly deep, the theme is a little samey, but lost planet meets the last of us appeals to me if no one else.

@Gaming-Planet: There are smaller "Walker Gears" in the game, at least in the co-op horde mode. Wouldn't be shocked if they were also in the single-player campaign later.
