Now Playing: GS News Update: Metal Gear Survive Requires Constant Internet Connection, Has Microtransactions

With just a month to go before its release, Konami has confirmed some major details about Metal Gear Survive, the first new entry in the series since series creator Hideo Kojima left the company. One of the biggest new pieces of information we learned during a recent preview session was that the game will require a constant internet connection to play, even for single-player. This is not totally unheard of in gaming, as Destiny 2 and other online-focused games require a persistent internet connection across all modes.

Konami said Metal Gear Survive requires a constant internet connection so the game can offer a "seamless" experience as players move between single-player and multiplayer. "Metal Gear Survive's online connectivity requirements were built to support a seamless integration between single player and co-op. This will also enable us to provide ongoing content post-launch."

Another detail we learned that Metal Gear Survive will have a microtransaction store where players can purchase virtual currency. Coins are available to purchase with real money (specific price points were not disclosed) or through standard gameplay, as is the case in many other AAA games. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain also offered a number of microtransactions, so this is nothing new for the series. You can check out the image above to see what's available to buy in Metal Gear Survive's store, including Boost Passes for various durations of time, but bear in mind that the game is not finished and as such, things could change.

In terms of length, Konami brand manager Jennifer Tsang told GameSpot that you can expect the game to take you 15-20 hours to play through the campaign. Of course, your mileage may vary, as everyone plays games differently. Also, the game has co-op and multiplayer so there are more reasons to come back and play more beyond the campaign.

Finally, Konami confirmed more details about Metal Gear Survive's beta. It begins on January 18 and will wrap up on January 22. For lots more on Metal Gear Survive, you can check out all of GameSpot's previous written and video coverage.

Haha it's like this game exists solely to piss people off.

The game is all right. Kinda difficult. But all these butt hurt comments make me wanna buy a copy.

@Bread_or_Decide: Really? So you're gonna support this trash just to say a "yeah **ck you!" to haters? Well that's pretty dumb. Either way it's your loss. You lose the money and you probably won't play the game much anyway considering it's gonna be a complete disaster. You're only being part of the problem why idiots create games like this.

@clay544888: Being a bad Metal Gear game dosent make it a bad game. This is where all the whiners come from.

Avatar image for clay544888
clay544888

@Pacer8888: PRETTY SURE it's gonna be a bad game. Looks to be one the biggest insults to gaming. Raping the Metal Gear name, recycling old ideas, MICROTRANSACTIONS, requires constant internet connection, etc. This game looks to be Konami's **** you to gaming. Almost like they're making this game solely to get under people's skin. I mean look at it, it's trying to be the combination of things that everyone despises in a game. ALL IN ONE. And Konami looks like they have no problem pissing people off so it all makes sense now.

@clay544888: Don't be fooled by the comments. The game looks awful so far and I don't want to play a game where I have to keep paying for it. How is that fun? When there are perhaps thousands of games out there already that I can choose from that don't have micro. Right now it looks like they're trying to copy Fallout 4, so I can just go play that since I haven't played it yet.

Giant Bomb's staffers said that they have an impression that Konami is late to the DayZ trend scene, and I have the same impression.

I am expecting Konami to delay the game and turn it into another PUBG. Besides, the mechanisms are already there; turn the Dust into another blue circle, have player characters run around scavenging things, do a reverse-Fulton or portal-travel into the map instead of parachuting in, etc.

@Gelugon_baat: Add to that, Konami doing a Full Nelson on its customer base.

A Metal Gear without Kojima.

All the rest of these stuff is bonus of reasons why not to buy it.

It will tarnish the Metal Gear name, flop and disappear. it'll probably reappear later as a new pachinko machine.

@ragnarocking: Metal Gear - Kojima= weird zombie survival game

Konami will have to make something absolutely mind blowing for me to ever buy one of their products again. Kojima, is, per the internet (and we know the internet is true, right?) a hard guy to work with. However, they treated him like utter garbage at the end. Even going so far as to refuse him his award ceremony for his development work. That's a $hitty thing to do regardless of how much of a p.i.t.a. you are to work with. Kojima IS Metal Gear. Metal Gear IS Kojima. Period. A Metal Gear game without Kojima on board to do it right? No thanks. I'll wait for Kojima's new game to see the light of day and then I'll buy 2 copies. One for PC, one for console. BOOM. Money in his pocket and NONE in Konami's.

Enter the whales, who will pour thousands of dollars into this, just because you know, they can, and cue the "-I spent $1000 dollars buying every possible booster etc. in Metal Gear Survive!" Youtube videos.

That moment you realise that Metal Gear Survive is a great game, the microtransactions are not invasive, the game is fairly priced, and Kojima got fired because he was caught sleeping with Konami's CEO's wife.

That'd be the day ha.

Avatar image for inebriantia

@Keaze_: We'll see the beta was actually pretty fun and gave you lots of resources for your effort, hopefully micros don't interfere. I think I rent it first just to be safe, tend not to get upset when you spend a few bucks.

I'm also not big MGS/Kojima fan, I understand those fans being upset, it's just not a factor for me.

This just seems like a strange way to take the series to me. It might be decent but I'm not holding my breath.

Even if I was interested in the single player, the always online just killed it for me. I can't think of a more undesirable game at the moment than this one.

@Pacer8888: I have Fios Gigabit and even with my amazing speeds, and reliable service, I would never buy a game that requires a constant internet connection just on PRINCIPLE alone.

@Pacer8888: No, pretty sure our "moaning" has good reasoning behind it. But to offended people like you, "moaning" is a word I'm sure you'll love to use to make you feel better.

Avatar image for naomha1

@JustPlainLucas: Not sure why. So many game require a constant internet connection to stay seamless these days it's almost second nature now. Now, if they were data mining or some $hit like that, yeah, bunk that. But Metal Gear was always on as well. Still not buying the game though. No Kojima in a Metal Gear game? Nah. Pass.

@JustPlainLucas: Was going to say the same, but I'll just upvote your comment and reply instead.

Internet my way goes out all the time, trees falling over lines. 'and no, I'm not moving. You and your close neighbor enjoy your fast internet' Its bad enough Doom on pc is a 70gb download, with huge enough patches to where I uninstalled it. Not alone requiring to be online.

This might be why Kojima left - they were heading a direction that undermines the art of the games.

Not that I think Kojima is all that great, but others do.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@so_hai: The working conditions are Konami are utter trash, even among game developers who have notoriously bad working conditions. Read up about it.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c56012aaa167

@so_hai: No. He left because Konami wanted to move away from AAA titles since they saw that AAA isn't as profitable as they wanted it to be.(Especially with the beginning of this generation of consoles)

Avatar image for so_hai
so_hai

@dorog1995: You mean, Konami aren't making AAA anymore, but Kojima insists on it?

Avatar image for deactivated-5c56012aaa167

@so_hai: Yep.Kojima loves to make expensive games with photo realistic graphics and expensive actors/voice actors.

He wouldn't want to stay in Konami and make some mid budget games.

Avatar image for so_hai

@dorog1995: Well, that's not unreasonable of Konami.

@joannadark360: By your use of the word just in its adverb form, you're effectively equating this effort to that of a full blown remake. Think about it.

@mbrogz3000: That would be either a year old or a twenty month old, but not a twenty month year old. Unless you're on a different reckoning system, of course, in which case you might be right.

EDIT: Or! Maybe you meant a twenty-month-old year-old? That would make sense, I think. Serves to show the importance of proper hyphenation. I don't very much like to hyphenate though.
