Metal Gear Survive Has A Class System, Here's How It Works

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

I'm A Survivor, Not Gonna Give Up.

In Metal Gear Survive, the lost members of Mother Base will do whatever it takes to endure in a hostile alternate-dimension populated with dangerous zombie-like creatures and other enemy combatants. Focusing more on survival and resource-gathering as opposed to the series' familiar stealth-action gameplay, players will have to scrounge for supplies, craft new gear and equipment, and rescue other survivors across the lands.

While Survive retains much of the core mechanics found from Metal Gear Solid V, it goes about its core gameplay a bit differently, tasking players to strengthen their character and their base with the materials procured out in the field. In the early hours, you'll find yourself in the role of the Survivor, one of four unique classes in Metal Gear Survive. But as you advance in rank and acquire more resources, you'll unlock additional classes that open up new skills and upgrade the core attributes--strength, vitality, dexterity, and endurance--for your character. Below, you'll find a breakdown of the starting Survivor class--including the perks and bonuses that can be unlocked.

You know, I remember a time whenever the metal gear series was my favorite game series of all time. I couldn’t wait for the next entry and would constantly search the web every day for any new info I could find on the game...MGS V killed the series for me and this game has put the final nail in the coffin. I hate MGS so much now that I find it very hard to go back and play the old games now.

@kstaggs3: Regardless of how the new games are, the old games are still amazing and wonderful. These new games shouldn’t effect how you feel about the classics.

@Sorrow_316: yes they are and yes they really shouldn’t but...for some reason they do. Idk I may give the series another go, just without peace walker and MGS V

@kstaggs3: I personally did a recent play through of MGS1 and tried to 100% MGS2. I found it refreshing. I’ll probably do MGS3 sometime this year maybe. I will agree MGSV lacked a lot of replay value, and once I beat it I haven’t revisited it since. Never played peace walker so I’m uninformed on that end.

I've never wanted anything to tank so badly in my life. And considering Battlefront II was only a couple months ago, that's really saying something.

Doesn't look good :( . They tried to focus on MO and using MGS name to earn some popularity but in fact it could have been just another IP. Bad choice to launch a title like that meanwhile the customers having great alternatives in MO style games. Hell, it looks kinda like what Capcom did with Umbrella Corp game which ended up as a complete disaster. The majority of media/gamers thinks of MGS as a dead franchise with Kojima's stepping off. They are giving it a final blow with this Survive shit.

@videogameninja: Me and a couple of friends are somewhat excited for the game. None of us are really invested in the MGS franchise so all the controversy surrounding doesn't affect us. It looks like a fun co-op/base defence/survival game with crafting. Granted, I don't think any of us are getting it at launch but we'll probably pick it up at a later date.

@asneakypoptart: Hey, there's nothing wrong with that. I have a feeling that those who are more likely to appreciate anything with this game will come from your kind of a background anyway (ex: Don't know much about MGS, are into coop online, etc...).

For those that have any kind of exposure to the franchise (and like it.) or who are not sold on some of the more controversial points (internet on always, micro-transactions, the fact that it has NOTHING to do with traditional MGS from the story to the gameplay.) something like this will not even cross their radar.

And y'know what? That's fine.

After all, we can't all like/dis-like the same things. That's one of the great things about being human.

I like classes in action games, when they are done correctly. It can be fun to work within the limitations as much as capitalizing on the advantages. EDITED my comment to remove my misunderstanding about pay to win elements. There does notmappear to be evidence of that after all.

@cappy: There's actually no evidence in this article that it'll be pay to win. As a matter of fact all it says is that it'll have microtransactions. That could be said for a ton of games these days. Wait and see what they are before you start saying it's pay to win. Right now you have no clue. It could be all cosmetic.

Classes belong to true RPGs. In action games, where the user's in direct control, individual ability should define the class in a nondeterministic way and the environment should support as many emergent possibilities as possible for all supported play styles from square one.

All these shitty progression systems are there just to leverage human fallibility and bring absolutely nothing substantial to the experience while hindering it, even if I do concede that in some action games systems like these make story sense, that's just the lamest way of implementing character development you could've.

@asnakeneverdies: I think Gamespot made an error in their reporting.

Konami has actually confirmed that it is not in fact a CLASS system being implemented but rather an ASS system.

The more you play and support this game the bigger an ASS you become.
