[Update 2] The Metal Gear Survive beta is now available on both PS4 and Xbox One. The beta runs through January 21 and features two maps, three missions, and live events, according to Konami. As described below, those who play the beta will receive in-game bonuses in the full version, should they decide to purchase it. You can check out the video above for an idea of what to expect.

[Update] Konami has clarified on Twitter that, as of yet, the Metal Gear Survive beta is not available for PlayStation 4 in America. However, it is now available for both PS4 and Xbox One in all other regions.

Now Playing: Trying To Survive The Metal Gear Survive Beta

Metal Gear Survive, the upcoming spin-off episode of Metal Gear Solid V, has a free beta on coming to PS4 and Xbox One ahead of the game's February 20 release date--and that beta's already live for some. It's available now on Xbox One, though it seems the PlayStation Store is being a little slow to update. We'll update when the trial is available on PS4.

Survive's beta will run from January 18-21 inclusive on both PS4 and Xbox One; publisher Konami says the beta will provide an opportunity "to jump into co-op mode to build, defend, and fight alongside friends online."

Those who participate in the beta will receive bonus items in the full game. These include a FOXHOUND name plate, a Metal Gear REX head accessory, and a bandana. It's unclear if there will be a way to unlock these without having played the beta, or if they'll be available at all in the PC version, which isn't receiving a beta.

Bear in mind the final game requires a constant internet connection and contains microtransactions, despite being a paid game with a single-player mode. Survive was originally due out in 2017, but it was delayed back at E3. It marks the first Metal Gear game to be released by Konami since Hideo Kojima, the series' creator, parted ways with the studio. This game is crap. Glad they released a beta so I wouldn't be surprised by the garbage this game really is. Way to destroy a great franchise. :(

Watched some beta footage. So MG is riding the horde mode D? Pass. Terrible idea. Enough with the horde modes and zobiesque bs. Smh

Edit: Only one more game that has zombies will get any time from me and thats Day Z when it comes to Xbox later this year(so they say). After that Im done with the undead.

@treymok: If metal Gear Acid was a failure it wouldn't had a second game.

If Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops was a failure it wouldn't have been more successful than Peace Walker.(And Peace Walker wouldn't have copied some ideas from it)

People are gonna voice their frustration, but Kojima is doing HIS own thing now and looks to be very exciting, if this flops i'm sure Konami already know about the explosion they caused with the split from Kojima.

Its their money and time invested in this, the sales will show them if they have made a huge mistake.

Fans of the series should invest time in kojima and his new title which already looks amazing!!

I hope this does do well, Konami have been around a long time and have made some great titles in and out of the arcade, gaming is about fun and going somewhere else for a while, diversity. The more gaming developers we have the better choice.

@ltjohnnyrico: I did try it but having to read through probably way over 100 tutorial entries hidden in the menu just to figure out how to do things isn't very enjoyable to me. They really could have at least put the most basic tutorials explaining the controls into the beta.

@SchNerdy: Look, you cannot say it’s a good game with the title “Metal Gear”. Metal Gear Solid is a game predicated on the littlest details and the genius that is Hideo Kojima. This game is clumsy, clunky, and completely misused. It tries, so hard, to be MGSV; but, MGS greatness stems from all the games having new features, new setting, and (this is a big one) a new look.

Look at the trailer. The character sets up a fence and throws a Molotov cocktail at a group of “those creature”. The game does not negate the fence as a structure and goes right through it.

If you watch the Gamespot video they post; they stab a dog with a spear and it shoots into the air. Then, they stab it AGAIN (while it’s on the ground) and it shoots in the air AGAIN.

It’s one thing if this was a tech demo, demonstrating a future game; but this atrocity is coming out in a month. Konami is banking on the fact that the “Metal Gear” title will grab gamers. They took everything that Americans “like”: zombies, four player co-op, tower defense, and base creator. It’s a sham. It’s a sin. It’s blasphemous. If you feed into this horrid creature that is just prole feed for the mindless gamer, you sir are everything wrong with gaming.

It's funny how there wasn't any backlash against Red dead redemption : Undead Nightmare even though that it was too similar to Survive.

This whole Survive backlash is just an excuse for fans to trash Konami for focusing less on AAA.

@dorog1995: bit of a strange comparison there, undead nightmare not only tied into the red dead game with the missing dead husband mission (empty grave) but was one of the best dlc packages ever, completely visionary, rock star got it 100% spot on.

Your right in the trashing of Konami, Kojima wanted too much control and with it money to develop games, no one is at fault his contract period had expired at Konami who were re structuring the company towards mobile gaming and as youve said non AAA titles. Imo Konami's biggest and maybe final mistake.

This may be a good game, i personally dont care if it uses MGS name, its about the gaming isn't it and the place you go to do so!!!

Imo opinion reminds me of 1st lost planet (without the snow setting) in terms of oxygen meets last of us.

I like the quantum "pocketing" concept where any item can be stored and used straight away like the gates etc

Does it have any guns?, iv seen bow and arrow.

Some good game mechanics here, not sure if ill get bored though.

Ill give it a go over the week end, hope you enjoy yours too !!!

Undead Nightmare is a million times better than Survive will ever be.

The main hate with Survive is that it is using the Metal Gear name in a blatant cash grab. It doesnt look like a good game at all, it has micro transactions, and it will be always online.

Undead Nightmare had none of that shit, it was a fun love letter to zombie horror movies in the old west.

And Undeads in RDR is as stupid as having zombies in MGS.(Since Red Dead franchise had a realistic story in wild west setting)
