Now Playing: GS News Update: Metal Gear Survive Announced

Konami has announced Metal Gear Survive, a multiplayer stealth game coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC in 2017.

The announcement was made during Gamescom 2016, where Konami showed off a trailer for it. Much of the footage featured in the video was set during the ending of Ground Zeroes, confirming it is set after the Metal Gear Solid V prologue.

Players are sucked into random wormholes along with fellow soldiers and chunks of Mother Base. They transport players into alternate timelines, where desert landscapes and half-formed structures sucked in along with you appear. Up to four people must work cooperatively to survive in the new harsh wilderness.

The stealth mechanics core to Metal Gear will remain a key pillar of the experience, and covert operations must be employed to escape massive biological threats. In the trailer they are shown to be zombie-like, but Konami said they will be more than just the shambling undead.

The game will branch out from the traditional pistols and rifles the series has been known for to give players the opportunity to master new weaponry, some of which is completely new to the series, such as the bow and arrow. New animations have been created for these.

Konami has said Survive will explore "themes and pursues a fresh spirit of exploration in unique gameplay mechanics."

"We are delighted to announce another exciting addition to the Metal Gear franchise," said Tomotada Tashiro, European President for Konami Digital Entertainment. "Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series' famed stealth elements but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience."

A press release adds: "In a struggle to stay alive on this harsh terrain filled with deadly creatures, soldiers who were previously on Mother Base now must work cooperatively in order to survive. Metal Gear Survive continues the pedigree of Metal Gear Solid V's highly praised gameplay design, with a unique blend of stealth and co-op play mechanics.

"Players can strategically manage massive threats with the help of four-player online cooperative play. New weaponry will also be introduced to combat charging creatures and lethal environments as well."

Konami did not provide any further details on the game. From our very brief presentation, Survive looks to be leveraging a lot of the work done on Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain's single-player and competitive multiplayer, and reshaping it into a new cooperative experience.

As alluded to previously, however, new areas and weaponry are being created specifically for Survive, in addition to unique animations for them. As of yet it is unclear who is working on the development. Series creator Hideo Kojima left Konami in 2015, and the LA studio responsible for Metal Gear Online was also shut down after the game's release.

I'm sorry, it's not a Metal Gear game without Kojima doing it.

I am right in thinking this game will not be a single player games as well? If so, I won't be buying

The people saying "if it had A Hideo Kojima game on it, people would like" doesn't know anything.

I say that because, in my opinion, I did not like what Kojima did to castlevania and what "Silent Hills" was going to be.

I'm not hating, I respect that people liked, but this is just to say he is not perfect.

@SteveAUG13 I get it bro, but to me it's like if Christopher Nolan directed the Batman franchise for the last decade, then got fired and DC announce a new batman film recycling The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises and adding zombies. WTF?

Somehow, I have got a feeling that this game is bound to fail. It may be because Kojima isn't directing it or might be due to the fact that this game somehow feels "Un-Metal Gear-like". Regardless to say, I won't be buying this game unless I've heard some positive reviews about the game. It felt kinda rushed for a game to me as well. It's like what the rest of the people here are saying, "it's just using the name of the franchise for monetary gain". I do hope this game would be nice. I enjoyed the Metal Gear franchise and it would be a shame if it were to disappear like dust in the wind. Losing Kojima reminded me of losing one of the favorite games when I was a kid: Tenchu. It feels like the games that I have truly enjoyed during my childhood are gone.

P.S. I'm still praying for a Dino Crisis VR game. :/

I haven't been an MGS fan since MgS2, but this is an absolute insult. Konami just took a massive dump on the franchise.

This isn't Metal Gear. It's some generic post apocalyptic survival horror game that is using the Metal Gear name.

Killing enemies through that fence reminded me of The Walking Dead, like they have some kind of base they are defending. Soldiers being dropped into a weird situation made me think of the movie Predators.

I'm sorry but to me, this "game" is just an insult to the franchise and to the fans of the Kojima's hard work. I mean, who are they kidding? Everyone knows that the masterpiece release the past 1 of september has no equal without his creator.

Avatar image for willauqs

wow - they aren't even trying to honor the franchise.

I can't wait for this game to come out so I can ignore it and let Konami know we don't care about anything MGS-related without Kojima.

@bluebird08: I honestly don't think a lot of the fans would buy it. Maybe the people who are die hard zombie fan will buy it, but not many fans. Then again, I could be wrong about this.

I don't really post on any websites but I just had to make an exception here and say I hope this game fails. Without Hideo it really isn't a MGS game. MGS finished with V anything after will not be canon to me. Not to mention wormhole really? What happened to you Konami you used to be cool.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c56012aaa167

@Alucard1a: wormhole was in MGS V.

Avatar image for xbr85

So this is what happens when Kojima has nothing to do with a MGS game

Avatar image for zmanbarzel
ZmanBarzel

@sticktaler36: Why so? It's common business law. Kojima was an employee. His employer paid for the creation of "Metal Gear," and continued to pay for entries in the series through MGS5.

Avatar image for ivarov

@zmanbarzel: LOL, are you kidding me? It's like if Konami payed you to write that comment

Avatar image for steveaug13
SteveAUG13

@ivarov: It's sad but true. Like Christopher Nolan directed Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, but he doesn't own the Batman franchise. And if you worked for Ford, say, and designed a new model of car that went on to sell millions, if you then left the company, you wouldn't own the rights to the design, name or anything else about that car.

Avatar image for zmanbarzel

@ivarov: ????

It's standard practice: the project you create for your employer while in their employ belongs to them.
