Metal Gear Solid 5's Quirky Gamescom Gameplay Video Shows Advances in Cardboard Box Technology

The cardboard box has some new uses in The Phantom Pain.

During Sony's Gamescom press conference today, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima took to the stage to show off new gameplay footage of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. This new video focuses on the many uses of the patented cardboard box, and after starting out normally enough, things quickly got weird.

For instance, early in the video we see how Big Boss can pop out of the box to take an enemy down:

He can also evacuate the box in order to avoid being captured. That's fairly straightforward, though it does look pretty hilarious because it's as if he's launched out of a cannon:

The image of a soldier on the side of the box is apparently enough to fool enemy soldiers into thinking they're looking at a comrade:

A soldier is not the only image that can adorn the side of your box, though. Others will cause enemies to come running:

Unfolding the box can reveal more than you might expect:

Being a PlayStation-focused event, there was even a PS4 tie-in:
