Metal Gear Solid 5 Multiplayer Character Customization Explained

The developer of MGS 5 has detailed how customization will work in the game's online component.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's multiplayer component, referred to as Metal Gear Online 3, received new information from a developer Q&A session.

On Twitter, developer Konami specifically addressed the ways that players will be able to customize and change their gear they use in matches. For example, players can change the color and patterns on the gear, and that gear will have different looks for different multiplayer classes .

Two pattern and color options for gear
Two pattern and color options for gear

You can see a list of what the developer revealed below.

  • Gear doesn't affect player stats.
  • Patterns cannot be designed by the player, but there are several to choose from.
  • There aren't "presets" for gear--there are categories for different body parts, such as specific gear for legs, arms, etc.
  • There is no Metal Gear Solid 4 gear in the game.
  • Some items are class specific.
  • You cannot unlock gear via MGS V's single-player mode.
  • Gear cannot be changed within matches.

Metal Gear Solid V launches on September 1 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3, and on September 15 for PC. Recently, Konami announced that the game would be playable for the first time to the public at Gamescom in August. Additionally, Konami officially removed Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima's name from the game's box art last week amidst reports that he will part ways with the company.

Are you excited for the game's multiplayer mode? Let us know in the comments.

Any MGO2 players here? That game was truly legendary once they introduce the survival and tournament modes!

@ejpaine: Those were magical times. Especially when you never won any tournament or survival games because everyone was hacking.

The "developer" has stated. Are we now talking about Hideo Kojima's team or the remaining staff of Konami? I'm really concerned with MGSV since Konami fired the development team. Who's gonna keep updating the game? More so, who's gonna keep updating the mp portion of the game? You can't just create online like MGO3 without keeping it fresh and updated.

"Patterns cannot be designed by the player, but there are several to choose from."

of course they can't, otherwise konami has nothing to sell the players later. Hopefully modders will fix this, a map editor would be nice also.

@Raged4Life: I can tell you didn't play the last Metal Gear Online.

The reason you can't design your camo is because it actually matters online. Its a game where people use stealth just as much as they run and gun, so the ability to hide yourself is actually a balance issue.

@SterlingFox: Camo hardly ever did anything in past metal gear games outside of single player. This is just a cop out. guaranteed theres going to be some bright red crap to put in.

I'm still surprised to hear the game is playable on last gen. Shouldn't this game be sort of equivalent to The Witcher 3 in that respect?

@Fartman7998: It uses a very well optimized PC engine called the Fox Engine, as with Source as long as you have a flexible engine you can downscale most games to run on last gen consoles. Witcher 3 was done with next gen in mind and even then they downscaled stuff on the PC version because of console limitations. I am actually very happy that MGSV GZ did run so perfect even on lower end PCs, that alone tells me that the PC version wont suck.

@Printul_Noptii: They didn't downscale because of consoles.

I like the open world and extreme wealth of gameplay variety from what I've seen so far, but sadly I've not played a single metal gear game before in my life.
Should I still purchase it? With so many games releasing so far, I want to be more selective with what I buy.

@mistuhjg: you dont need any other MG game before this one. you could get 3 and peace walker but they do not play anything like this and honestly they might put you off MGS games, MGS3 is hard, really hard (im sure a vet will tell me otherwise but as a n00b to the series you will find it hard) i would suggest Ground Zeros, its the Prequel MGSV anyway and plays (the feel of it) the same as V. If you enjoy Ground Zeros (get it second hand it is more like a demo than a full game (it is free on Playstation Plus at the moment i think)) then get MGSV. if you are enjoying the story and want to find out more you can go back to the other games but note they play nothing like this one will, and the story is best understood while you drop acid, in a heatwave while dehydrated during a stroke while you breath n2o... good luck.

@mistuhjg: I recommend getting the HD collection.

If you have time for it before MGS5TPP.

Skip mgs2 (it has nothing major to do with the plot).Play and finish MGS3, then Peace Walker. Then play GZ if you haven't already.

MGS V TPP is set to be one of the greatest games ever made, but it is lore/story heavy, and fan-focused game - imo you need to play previous titles to make the most of it.

@mistuhjg:
You are welcome. I see what you mean. In my case I played Metal Gear Solid 4 when I first purchased my PS3. Immediately good hooked to the series, even though I played only one game. Metal Gear Solid 5 GZ and TPP were highly anticipated by me. I started reading lots of MGS lore and stuff.
Then I bought Ground Zeroes, saw the opening, and decided not to play it.
I played the HD remaster of Metal Gear Solid 3 from the collectors edition. Despite being archaic, and somewhat quirky in controls, it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played. I played it literally non-stop and stopped playing other games. Once you get used to the control, you realize the amazing level of freedom of gameplay in this game. Played it on Hard and it was a challenging blast.
Then I played Peace Walker (which I didn't like as much), but it was far more modern (still a smaller PSP game in HD remaster) in terms of control, but more limited in playstyle.
Finished it and moved straight for Ground Zeroes (what an upgrade huh?).
Now Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain is my most highly anticipated game of all time, hoping for the best.

@GunEye: damn; if I didn't have to go to school and study science and stuff, all I'd do all day is play video games for sure.

I feel like I missed out on a lot of great stuff even though i've been gaming for a large percentage of my life..

@mistuhjg: For the best gameplay I'd recommend MGS3 and MGS: Peace Walker. Besides these two games are the prequel to TPP. On the other hand, the other games in the series are good but there's more cutscenes than gameplay in those.

True, but with MGS and Kojima, this was a tradition for years, so to take it away now is just outright disrespectful of Konami.

@7tizz: First of all, your speculation game is so strong that even conspiracy theorists would laugh at your conjecture. Nobody knows what happened between Konami and Kojima, except for Konami and Kojima.

Second, in what alternate universe do you reside in where developmental teams aren't credited on the box art? Most games nowadays properly credit both the publishing partner that released the game, and the development studio that created the game.. even when those studios are handled at an internal level. Did you even think about that before you said it? Because you're outrageously wrong.

Third, Konami didn't develop this game.. Kojima Productions did. Yes, they were a part of Konami, but ultimately they were the games developmental team. And Konami just shoved their genitalia into Kojima Productions mouths and their middle fingers into their faces right at the very last possible moment. The fact that you attempt to rationalize such a blatantly poor and selfish business decision as Kojima needing to 'be taken down a peg' is one of the silliest things I've ever read online. You sound like every hipster idiot who goes against the tide just for the sake of it and talks out of his ass without even understanding what he, himself is saying.

Go home, kid.

So I assume your comment is also a money issue? Does your paycheck from KONAMI include health insurance? Hope you get one. Your effort deserve it.
