Metal Gear Solid 3-Themed Co-Op Event Coming To Survive

Still... in a dream...

Konami has announced a co-op event for Metal Gear Survive on PS4, Xbox One, and PC that draws inspiration from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The event, titled 'The Encounter 1964,' is set to launch on April 10 and will run for two weeks.

According to Konami, the event will feature "recognisable elements and fatigues from Snake Eater" as "items such as the iconic Crocodile Cap, camo fatigues worn by Naked Snake, and EVA's jumpsuit can be added to the user's avatar." Additionally, "a new cassette detailing the Shagohod can also be found." You can take a look at the new cosmetic items in the image below.

Metal Gear Survive takes place after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. You play as a member of Snake's army who gets sucked through a wormhole to find yourself in a harsh alternate reality filled with crazed zombie-like creatures. Here, health, hunger, and thirst become your immediate concerns as you venture out into the unknown in search of resources to stay alive.

In GameSpot's Metal Gear Survive review it received a 5/10, saying that it is "oppressive, demanding, and obtuse, and needlessly so." This is "a shame because there's actually a good survival game in there, but the pressures it places on you make uncovering and enjoying that unappealing," we said.

"Over time the ability to manage thirst and hunger becomes slightly more manageable, especially if you play the multiplayer, but the lead up to that is debilitating," we continued. "There's some satisfaction to be had if you persevere and savor the small victories, but you'll quickly find yourself thinking about if your time would be better spent playing something else."

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

What a sad end to the metal gear series, such a shame when a great game is reduced to crap.

In my opinion Konami is using money in the wrong direction. What about a Silent Hill remake with Fox Engine, some ports like Castlevania SotN with DS series. Contra, Suikoden, Rebirth series from Wii. Maybe MGSurvive is not a bad game at all, but come on, Konami have more IPs that deserves more atention not just Metal Gear.

this will easily be the worst retail release of the year and one of the most disappointing sequels to a beloved franchise in the history of gaming. this game came out less than two months ago and has already dropped to half price on amazon. that is how poor the reception and sales of the game are (fully deserved, of course). thankfully, the reception of this game was so bad, that i don't think there will be another metal gear spinoff ever again after this. the franchise can rest in peace with the respect that it deserves. this being konami, though, we don't know for sure and they might make a mgs themed battle royale game for mobile next because why not?

Most underrated game this year, naturally. Looking forward to returning for the endgame after I get far enough in Sea of Thieves.

The game was fun, I still play but I have no idea why lol. It is getting a little old for me though now, they really need to add more co-op missions in there, or even a few competitive modes like a mode where you have to compete to get the most resources. Or just a straight up Wanderers vs. Survivors mode like Left 4 Dead

I just hope they add more types of coop missions and some new enemy types to this game.

@nibbin1191: agreed. It's just a pity that it was a low budget game. with more budget they could have made it even better.

Gotta' admire the minds over at Konami for trying to use every tactic they can get to get fans of the franchise to finally cave in and buy Metal Gear: Survive. Resorting to a fan favorite themed coop in the way of Snake Eater is sneaky so soon after the full game's release.

Still don't think it will win any new converts however.

@DeadPhoenix86: Because it’s a bad game that is trying to win over the fan base buy utilizing nostalgia with an all time classic.

@DeadPhoenix86: To each their own. It’s a dumpster fire of a game and a vast majority of people believe so as well. Certain concepts of the game are ok, but that’s the case with just about any type of crafting element in any game. But the game, as a whole, is bad.

@nibbin1191: I can believe a lot of people who have said it’s bad have not played the game. I have, both the beta and actual game, and it’s an insult to gamers. But both critics and gamers agree it’s bad, really bad. Gamespot gave it a 5 and the only other title that goes to the level of bad is Resident Evil 6 which got a 4.5. To each there own, if you enjoy it, well enjoy it.

@nibbin1191: I ageee that both EA and activison have bastardized the gaming landscape, Survive is just as large of an insult. It took all the lore of the original Metal Gear series and said “we don’t care” (I wrote it all out but lost it cause of my phone). What Konami did was this: what do Americans like? Zombies, multiplayer, co-op, Minecraft... perfect through that in a blender and through our Medal Gear name on it. It insults me for them to think I’m that stupid to like this game. So yes, it’s an insult to gamers and I stand by my statement.

@nibbin1191: what, how?! The game wasn’t finished because Konami rushed it. There was an entire book dedicated to concept arts that were supposed to be in the game, but because the game was rushed Kojima didn’t get to it. That game did not go away from the lore.

@nibbin1191: The idea of the “twist” is a result of the whole Metal Gear Solid franchise. Venom Snake, the clone of Big Boss (everyone is Big Boss), is actually the enemy from the original NES Metal Gear 1 and 2 games. In Metal Gear Solid, Liquid Snake wanted the body of Big Boss because he was allegedly dead. We come to find out he has been alive the entire time at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4.

Ocelot is different because he believes in the plan of Big Boss. Ocelot knew you were not Big Boss and that Zero needed to be stopped. Miller and Ocelot have a conversation that they know they will be enemies in the future, Miller goes on to train Solid while Ocelot goes to train Liquid. Here, Ocelot is an ally and it’s why he is different.

Skull Face I agree wasn’t the greatest and Quiet was whatever.

I’m not sure what holes were supposed to be filled in about Big Boss, other than the fact he was the ultimate puppet master. It’s no so much the last fight on the island that would have completed it, but the dialogue and any subsequent mission afterwards would have filled any holes.

Good conversation though

@nibbin1191: You also have to know, Kojima was done with Metal Gear after 4. The other concepts where supposed to be in a new game and Konami rejected it. Then he said, it’s a new Metal Gear and they loved it. The idea of shoe horning it in, which I will agree with you on it, was more Konami’s fault than Hideo.

That being said, go check out the concept art book or check out some of the fan theories based off of the concept art. The Phantom Pain could have had some amazing stuff, and a lot of it could have been simply DLC: the “evil Chico” character would have been sweet.

And once again, good conversation.

@ixidjfrizzixi: agreed. there are many trolls on this page -- don't waste your energy defending your stance against people who lack any sense of rational thinking or credibility. we all know how bad this game is. thankfully, mg:s has all but disappeared from the gaming landscape. it dropped incredibly fast and will be long forgotten before we know it.

MGS3-theme suits! I welcome them! but I'm still not supporting Konami. I can support Yota, who directs MGSurvive!

@MMX377: Yet the people who created the game hate Yota. They bashed him openly in the game, because essentially he wasn’t a part of the franchise.

“Bastard Yota” might refer to Metal Gear Survive director Yota Tsutsumizaki, while “Cunning Yuji” could refer to the game’s producer Yuji Korekado. - Kotaku

This stemming from the list of people who were AWOL (missing) from the Ground Zeroes incident.

@ixidjfrizzixi: So? Konami do not care about you, me, or us. Of course, Yota wasn't a part of the MGS franchise, but Konami owned it now. Kojima gave up everything he created and envisioned to them and left for his own new project, Death Stranding.

I still welcome MGS3 theme event/challenge.
