Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence E3 2005 Report

Can man subsist solely on Metal Gear Solid 3? Yeah, probably.

Much like Metal Gear Solid 2 was remixed and updated in Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Kojima Productions is now hard at work on a similar update for MGS3, subtitled Subsistence. With the addition of an online mode, new camera angles, and lots of other fantastic extras, this one sounds like a dream come true for fans of the series.

The additions start small but sound big. The additional face paints that only ended up in the European release of MGS3 will be included. You'll find additional missions in Snake vs. Monkey mode. Duel mode will let you get your boss fights on in short order. MGS3: Subsistence will also have an all-new, optional behind-the-back camera perspective. This will let you play the entire game from a more traditional third-person angle, which should make the whole adventure feel pretty different.

Subsistence will have an online mode that supports up to eight players. The idea behind it is that it will still play roughly like the single-player game, but you'll be working in teams of three as you attempt to take out the opposing side in team battle mode. You can also play Snake vs. enemies, a one-against-five configuration, if you're feeling especially stealthy.

The game will have a good collection of extras that includes the very first Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, both originally released on the MSX home computer but never released in the US. A theater mode will let you watch all of the parody-style game trailers that Kojima and the team at KCEJ released during the game's development.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence will be released on the PlayStation 2. No release information has been announced at this time.
