Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance PC version requires Internet connection? [UPDATE]

A fix is on the way.

[UPDATE] Konami is aware of the issue and a fix is on the way.

The original story is below.

The PC version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance launched today, but its arrival was not without issue.

Numerous Steam users are reporting today on the game's forums and to Kotaku that the single-player game will not function without an Internet connection. The game reportedly will not start while in Steam's offline mode. What's more, if your Internet connection drops, you'll supposedly be kicked from the game right away.

It is possible that the issue is a simple bug and not any kind of DRM from Konami, but that remains to be seen. We've reached out to Konami for comment but have not heard back yet.

As Kotaku points out, the Steam product page for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance does not inform purchasers that the game requires an Internet connection. The game originally launched for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in February 2013.

The PC version includes previously released DLC (Blade Wolf, Jetstream, and VR Missions) and runs at 60 fps.

For those that haven't played it - this is a really solid game imo.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I dunno, it looks uncharacteristically gory for an MG title, and I was never a huge fan of Raiden.

This is a disappointingly buggy port. Hopefully Platinum will address these shortly. The game ran in single digit FPS when running through my TV because of the limited and capped screen resolutions, but when I switched it to a computer monitor that matched one of the available resolutions it ran smoothly at 60 fps. Also, many users are reporting crashes when switching away from the default windowed mode to full screen but I didn't experience that issue myself.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Then why "report" things that other people said on internet forums and comments? You just needed to be heard huh?

"and runs at 60 fps" - gotta love these remarks when we're talking about a pc game and all the possible hardware variations it ensues.

Yeah, but If it's poorly made and its simulation speed is tied to fps then it's disaster. Like NFS Rivals on pc is locked to 30 fps and if you hack it to run 60 fps the simulation also doubles and renders game unplayable. This is very stupid game design and inexperienced pc devs tend to do that. Wonder why EA game was mess lile that. they have made for pc forever. Locking or even capping frame rate on pc is simply stupid thing to do, because someone isn't able to run steady 60, some want at least 60, some aim 120 etc.

But yeah I think this is not Konami drm and it's something to do with Steam. Nice click proof title tho!

I preordered it during a steam sale, paying 14 Euros for it. I love hacknslash games with good mechanix (huge fan of bayonetta) so this one was a nobrainer. The PC port runs excellent and i have a poor iMac from 2011 where i run Windows 7 on it. It runs on 1080p with about 45 FPS average... this port is truly well done i mean it. For the always on issues, i didnt recognize them, because my internet never dropped... but i already read that it is actually a steam bug and will be fixed, so 9/10 ( but you shoudlnt take the story really serious i guess, far too cheesy and over the top even for metal gear ...).... but... BUY IT, its freaking AWESOME how the combat feels... got it ? .. .buy ...now...! thx gl hf.

@variable21 Some people just need to be heard, even if its something nobody cares about, like a game review in the comments section of a loosely related news story. When they announced that Heath Ledger died before The Dark Knight, did you go onto that story's comment section and tell everyone what you thought of the movie?

CDProjekt Red has the right concept on what to do regarding DRM.

Developers everywhere should follow their path.

Whenever it was intended or not, it can be bypassed.Something a lot of those companies don't seem to get,all you do is to creating an inconvenience for your paying consumers not pirates.

Releasing half assed products has become a trend lately whenever it's on PC or console.

This game has many many bugs, you realise that the game is heavily bugged when you get one the very first time you try out the game.

As for the always on DRM, we should ask for compensation, it is immoral not to announce your customer for such a foul restriction...

<< LINK REMOVED >>Compensation is likely going to be a patch to fix the bug which prevents offline play... and hopefully a number of other bugs as well.
