Mega Man Co-Creator Making Spiritual Successor to Mega Man Legends

Creator Keiji Inafune is kickstarting another game that channels the legacy of the Mega Man series.

Mega Man Legends launched back in 1997 as a 3D, open-world adaptation of the Mega Man series. Now, designer and producer Keiji Inafune has announced a spiritual successor to Legends, titled Red Ash: The Indelible Legend.

The game, an open-world RPG, is being funded via Kickstarter, and Inafune is asking for at least $800,000. At the time of this writing, it sits at a little over $250,000 with 28 days left.

Inafune is currently finishing up his last project, another Kickstarter game called Mighty No. 9, which is inspired by the 2D, sidescrolling entries in the Mega Man series. With Red Ash, he appears to be going in a different direction. On its Kickstarter page, he explains, "Red Ash is a very different project from a retro action game like Mighty No. 9, in terms of both scale and concept. The primary goal with Red Ash is to tell a story on a grand scale; all of the primary concepts are clearly visualized in the minds of the creative team, from the overall plot to historical background. Even the final ending scene is planned out!"

To achieve his goals, Inafune has brought together several members from the original Mega Man Legends team. Five of the ten members worked with Inafune on Legends.

If Red Ash reaches its $800,000 goal, the studio will make a prologue to a larger story, consisting of three episodes. At $1.3 million, the developer will be able to make an additional three episodes beyond the prologue. Inafune promises, however, that even the prologue will be a full game: "Of course, this is not to say that reaching the minimum goal will be an incomplete game. It won't be the full story we want to tell, but we promise it will still be a game you will never forget!"

Red Ash is planned for release on PC, with ports to other consoles coming if the studio receives enough money through Kickstarter.

Inafune has simultaneously launched a Kickstarter for a companion anime film, called Red Ash: Magicicada. The movie is in production at Studio 4°C, known for its work on Genius Party and two episodes of Halo: Legends.

Inafune is also collaborating on an Xbox One-exclusive title called Recore. It was announced at E3 last month.

Mighty No. 9, meanwhile, is due out on September 15 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Vita, Wii U, 3DS, and PC.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

I don't approve of this, this dude is simply using famous IPs for making money. I mean seriously, he's stealing ideas from classic games, making low-quality clones out of them, and then releasing them as 'spiritual successors'. F*** this s***.

Wake me up when Capcom decides to revive their series...

f I guess the old saying "beggars can't be choosers" doesn't apply to Kickstarter.

I agree with the people who say that he should get MN9 out the door before asking/begging for more money.

@quickshooterMk2:

It's probably a better option than the current methods of funding game development. I mean at least with crowdfunding developers don't have to worry about publishers injecting their "constructive criticism" into the design process or forcing arbitrary or even outright harmful release dates. For that matter it also gives developers the option of releasing games without DRM or copyright.

In a very real sense crowdfunding could allow digital media developers of all sorts to turn back the clock to a time period when artists were paid to work, not for their work. Just think of the blow the entire copyright industry would take if digital media developers could not only survive but thrive in an environment where copyrights were pointless because the developers didn't (need to) rely on copyright laws to make their money.

@Marikhen: "without DRM or copyright"

Too bad everyone does Steam-only releases for PC and digital-only on consoles...

@dyshonest: Mighty No 9 and Bloodstained are also getting physical copies on consoles :)

And Shenmue 3 will be getting physical copies for both PC and PS4 (at least for backers)

@quickshooterMk2: Because relying on Capcom to come out with an actual MM Legends game is the better option? Kickstarter gives games a chance to exist that otherwise wouldn't. Sometimes the system is abused, or it fails, but all of the successes outweigh that.

I played MM Legends RPG back in the day when it first came out, it had some amazing ideas: large open cities and areas to run around and blast things. The story was slow, light, and paced poorly but just getting to a mini-boss or boss fight was enough to keep you going. MY only complaint was there just wasn't enough MegaMan absorbing power to keep combat interactions interesting in between long stretches to the next objectives.

Still though, I am willing to donate $25 because the more RPGs made the better ... I mean what? it is not like I am gonna donate good money to something worthwhile like blind children, starving babies, or teach Jerseyans to bath charities.

Ideally , they'd have delivered Mn9 to demonstrate they can deliver a project. Plus they're targeting the mega man fanbase again so potentially the same people are donating.

Don't get greedy Inafune...just focus on making a great game with Mighty No. 9. I'm sure people wouldn't be happy at all if you release a shoddy game after you asked for money for another game to make.

Not keen on this. Sure Mighty No. 9 is releasing soon but he's currently working on a game with microsoft so how much attention will this game get?

Should have waited for MN9 to come out (hopefully) get great reviews then everyone would be a lot more willing to splash the cash.

I'm all for supporting good developers but I would have appreciated them creating these 2 new Kickstarters until after the Mighty No. 9 supporters received that game. Plus the revenue generated from Mighty No. 9 should be put towards other projects. They can't rely on donations forever. People wont put up with it.

I just wont help fund these games if these devs don't manage the money they make off previous KS games and keep begging their fans for more money up front.

@Oni No..Mighty No 9 has nothing to do with this kickstarter. Mighty No 9 exists because Capcom wont let him make a traditional Megaman game. This exists because Capcom wouldnt let him make Megaman Legends. So....Blame Capcom. :

My only issue with Mega Man Legends that needs to corrected is that the ruins in the Legends games were very linear and repetitive. Mega Man series has always been action-platforming it would be great to see platforming.

@lorider25: I think it is more about Keiji Inafune being a badass and a developer people know will deliver good games. He stayed at Capcom out of loyalty, but once he realized he was surrounded by idiots he left and has been on a rampage across the video game industry ever since.

The guy isn't Shigeru Miyamoto, but he deserves to have his name mentioned alongside him and Hideo Kojima.

Bit of a case of bad timing, announcing the campaign just as Mighty No.9 is about to release at last.

I do wish him the best with his next project, but...I do think he should have waited until the game released. Unless...this is all a means to build hype for Mighty No.9 as well as to make Red Ash a new thing......

@kentray1985: It's not out, and won't be out until September, when this campaign will more than likely end.

For a developer to make another game, it's prudent for them to actually finish the one they're making already, rather than launch a Kickstarter for another game they want to make despite his independent potential not being proven yet.

Don't get me wrong; Inafune's a great guy and has made some really great games. But he needs to focus on one thing at a time.

@40mdf0: The man is a veteran in the gaming industry, he's given us more beloved games than most others. No offense, but I really don't think somebody from a comment section has any clue what he needs, or doesn't need to do with his business.

The man has proven he's had big dreams for games for years that were not possible in the past, he now has freedom to make these games and people are saying he's too greedy and that he needs to slow down. Mighty No 9 has a great response behind it, the only negative response are from entitled Megaman nerds who hate the changes.

I'll wait for the reviews of Mighty No. 9 first, and if they're just barely good enough I'll buy it and play it... AND THEN if I really dig it, maybe I'll support this Red Ash. I'm at a point in my life where I need to pinch every penny.

@elheber: The project only has 28 days left. Mighty no. 9 looks like a fun game so why not support the successor to Mega Man Legends. By not supporting it you're only telling Capcom that they was right for not funding more Mega Man Legend games.

Look, if everything goes well with Mighty No. 9 then I would have no problem backing this because I loved Mega Man Legends. But if you have to go to the people to get money, you should probably make good on your first promise before offering another promise and asking for money. I would hope they would spend this time de bugging and fine turning Mighty No. 9 for release and, as customary for gaming in 2015, have a Day-1 patch ready in case they can't fix the bugs by the ship date.
