Medal of Honor Impressions

EA shows some single-player action in the latest entry of its first-person shooter franchise.

While we've already seen extensive parts of Medal of Honor's multiplayer mode--thanks to the beta that's currently available on the PlayStation 3--we really haven't seen too much of the game's single-player campaign. At EA's recent studio showcase event, we got a brief taste of the new Medal of Honor's single-player in the form of some serious sniper action in a section called Friends From Afar. The scene is set in the rugged mountain terrain of Afghanistan where you--as Deuce, a member of the Tier 1 Wolfpack--are charged with taking up a sniping position to take down a few targets at a sizeable distance.

This is probably the last thing you want to see.

As Deuce goes into scope mode, we see three targets at a small encampment and notice that the scope moves with every breath Deuce takes (there also appears to be a slight jump in the scope when his heart rate goes up). Naturally, when Deuce takes his first shot, there's a noticeable delay from when you actually hear the round discharge and when it makes contact with the target, which gives you a good idea of how far away you are from the targets. This also reinforces just how skilled you need to be as a sniper. When Deuce takes down the first target, the remaining enemies go into a panic, attempting to locate his position. It's not long after Deuce takes down the remaining targets that another group of enemies starts firing mortar rounds toward his direction. Switching his sights quickly to their position, Deuce takes out the enemies manning the mortar, but not before they get a few rounds off, making the situation a bit more hectic than it was previously.

The multiplayer action is quite a bit different from the single-player.

With the mortar crew successfully defeated, we hear a bit of radio chatter. Deuce and his team decide to stay in the area and see if they can't take out more enemy soldiers. Shortly thereafter, it's revealed that there's an enemy sniper still lurking on the hillside. Deuce takes him out as well, but just as he does, something trips the claymore mines just outside of his position. It turns out that enemy forces have located him and the other member of his team. They start spilling into the area, so Deuce switches out his sniper rifle for something a little more friendly in a close-range fight. With that, the demo abruptly ends and we left wanting to see more of Medal of Honor's single-player action before its October 12 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
