Mayans MC Season 5 Will Take EZ To His Limit, So More People Will Probably Die

Mayans MC showrunner Elgin James spoke to GameSpot about EZ's dark turn and what it means for Season 5.

Comments

The latest season of Mayans MC sure was a wild ride--and a scary one at times. EZ Reyes (JD Pardo), who was the outlaw biker for a heart of gold for the three seasons prior, looks as if he's traded it in for one made of stone. That's not necessarily the case, though, and things will get much worse to prove that point in Season 5.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for the Season 4 finale of Mayans MC. If you've yet to watch the episode, you should stop reading now.

EZ rose through the ranks last season, ending up as president of the Santo Padre chapter of the Mayans MC. In doing so, he essentially led a coup against Alvarez (Emilio Rivera), ousting the former head of the group from his position. He also lied to Bishop (Michael Irby) about the former president getting his post back, instead installing him as vice president. It's a cocky move, but one that naturally fits with the man EZ became in Season 4--a ruthless and violent killer who would sacrifice everything, including people he loved, for the club.

Now, moving forward, EZ as president is going to have a very different vibe than what we've seen on both Mayans MC and Sons of Anarchy in the past. "We haven't really seen a benevolent leader before," showrunner Elgin James told GameSpot. "We haven't seen someone that operates on love for his brothers. Marcus operated this machine, but then look at how people would just drop like flies and Sons of Anarchy, you know, people would just drop."

While he may be operating based on a love for his fellow Mayans, it hasn't stopped EZ from becoming a cold-hearted killer. Then again, as James explained, this is the story the show has been telling from the beginning. "We always knew that he couldn't escape his fate," the showrunner said. "He couldn't escape his destiny, even though the path seemed very clear that he was gonna go to Stanford, etc."

James continued, "It goes back to that story in Season 3 when Felipe is talking about why he's scared of EZ talking to Gabby, though Gabby didn't pick up on it. [EZ] didn't cry when their dog died, and then we find out that he couldn't cry because he had to break the dog's neck. Angel was a mess, like any of us would be when somebody we love died."

EZ doesn't naturally operate on emotion like his brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas) or his mother. Instead, he is Felipe's (Edward James Olmos) son, and it's something Felipe has been aware of for a very long time. Still, while EZ may be destined for the kind of life his father always feel he'd pursue, the new Mayans president can only push himself so far. "We're going to find out in Season 5 what his limit is for sure," James teased.

What's more, James was sure to note that EZ's story from here until the end of the series, should it be renewed, won't be a continuous journey down a dark path. Instead, he said, there "may be some pockets of darkness."

If those pockets are anything like what we experienced in Season 4, though, they will be dragging EZ down pretty far. The question is whether it'll go as far as Sons of Anarchy did, where most of the main characters were simply unlikable by the end of the series. Perhaps, there's still enough good in his life to keep EZ from going too far. After killing Gabby (Sulem Calderon), his friend from jail, or Canche (Jimmy Gonzales), maybe he's already too far gone.

Mayans has yet to be renewed for a fifth season.
