Mass Effect Remasters Are "Easy Money," But Here's Why EA Won't Make Them

"Can we make an easy buck on remastering Mass Effect? Yes."

[UPDATE] It turns out Peter Moore's interview containing these quotes was taped before Patrick Soderlund made his comments about EA's thoughts on remasters. We have updated the story.

The original story is below.

EA could make "easy money" on remasters of the original Mass Effect games, but the publisher is unlikely to make them in part because they could distract from Mass Effect: Andromeda. This is according to EA executive Peter Moore, who said in a new interview that EA probably won't pursue any remaster projects across its entire catalog because it would rather look to the future. This statement comes not long after EA Studios boss Patrick Soderlund gave fans a glimmer of hope that EA might make remasters.

"We're a company that is focused on delivering for the future," he told IGN. "I was asked a question once [about remasters and I said] it's just not what we do. We've got incredibly talented dev studios around the world who are focused on delivering new IP, new experiences, [and] more and more live services."

"Can we make an easy buck on remastering Mass Effect? Yes. Have a thousand people asked me that? Yes, they have," he added. "We just feel like we want to go forward. There's a little thing called Mass Effect: Andromeda that we're totally focused on at BioWare and it's gonna be magnificent."

Moore went on to say that "anything that distracts" from Andromeda, including Mass Effect remasters, is not something EA would want to pursue. Also, he suggested EA doesn't have the internal bandwidth to make Mass Effect remasters.

"Do we have teams lying around that are doing nothing right now that [can go and make remasters]? No we don't. We want to focus on the future and delivering new IP and new experiences," he explained. "There's easy money to be made all over this industry. But the real focus should be on being player-first and focused on delivering new IP and new experiences and that's where our real focus is."

As the interviewer pointed out, if EA sees itself as a player-first company, why would it not release Mass Effect remasters if that's what fans want? It's not that simple, Moore said.

"Is there demand? Yes, there's thousands of people who want it. Do we need millions? I don't know," he said, adding that there would be costs beyond the financial ones to releasing Mass Effect remasters. "Our blinders are on and [we are] looking toward future."

Moore went on to say that a lot of people want EA to make Skate 4 and a new Fight Night game.

"We're a 34-year-old company that has thousands of pieces of IP around the world. Road Rash!" he said. "If you allow yourself to take the easy road--not to diss remastering great franchises, but there are so many opportunities for us to have people go to something else."

Go watch the full IGN interview here.

EA has, to date, avoided entering the game-remastering business, even speaking out against the practice.

Andromeda is slated for release between January and March of 2017.

Now that ME:A has been shitcanned, EA should have no excuses for not giving ME fans what we want: a remastered version of the trilogy for PS4. This should be a no brainer for the bean counters at EA. Mass Effect Trilogy on PS4 would be a huge seller. Get on it you fools!

Avatar image for N0madS0uL

Personally, ME Andromeda doesn't hold a candle to the original 3 ME games. I would pay easy for a remastered of the old games, new engine, new tech? Would buy it in a heartbeat. Commander Shepard just instilled a feeling of a true hero, what you did in the game felt like it mattered, you got sucked into it and hoped it never ended even though you couldn't wait to get to the end. If they can remake some old movies and do it well, they can do it with games also. EA, WAKE UP!

Avatar image for gun_blade25

They don't even need to remaster, just add controller support for the PC version and sell a bundled version with all the DLC and everyone would be happy.

Avatar image for radiioaktivman

This is such a cop out. EA doesn't have to enter the game remastering business, most companies hire studios that specialize in remastering other company's games. EA can continue to focus on Andromeda and other games while the other studio remasters Mass Effect.

Avatar image for twalls27

I agree that there are too many remasters out there but this is something I really want. Even just a compilation, no facelift, of all the mass effects with all the dlc in 1 package on a current gen console and I would be ecstatic

Avatar image for creepywelps

Just get the pc versions if you want a "remaster".

Avatar image for doomsday7teen

Road rash used to be my ish back in the day lol. Good times with that bat and chain.

Avatar image for jay30mcr

Microtransactions and gutting games to sell the resulting content as DLC is a much easier way to make moolah eh EA?

Avatar image for swimbearuk

I'm glad they aren't doing remasters. They should just do what other developers are doing and get an older Mass Efect title released on Games with Gold a few weeks before Andromeda is released. There's not really any reason to remaster with backwards compatibility anyway.

Avatar image for chewierises

But it's not really a cash grab- most fans want it. New fans who might not be familiar with ME might also get the new games to catch up on lore and old story before the release of Andromeda. The Nathan Drake Collection made perfect sense because new Playstation users could play the older games and catch up on the story and characters. I love Mass Effect and would love to have the whole collection on ONE console. I don't want to have to get the 360 just to play those stories again.

Avatar image for radiioaktivman

@chewierises: I've never played ME either , and I've been waiting for a remaster the same way I waited for Bioshock and Skyrim to be remastered before playing them. Oh yeah, and both we remastered this year. Without remasters, I never would have played those games or The Last of Us or Grand Theft Auto V or Uncharted 1-3.

Avatar image for doomsday7teen

@chewierises: I agree with you completely. I've never played a ME game to date and getting the new one without playing the older games will not be a priority for me.

So while I applaud EA not focusing on remasters at this time it's a little shortsighted in my opinion for this reason. Mass Effect games were some of my favorite games last console generation. On the current consoles, Mass Effect is having storyline to be separate from the original trilogy, but there are a lot of gamers that are going to be growing into Xbox One or PS4 who never got to play the original trilogy on the last generation consoles. I would hope that they would reconsider that in the future because I would definitely not be opposed to replaying the original trilogy all over again and play around with different choices vs the ones I made initially.

Avatar image for urbanman2004

EA has never cared a/b the gamer. Moore just made some weak excuse b/c EA would probably just f*ck up the opportunity at remastering the ME trilogy.

Avatar image for bright-raven77

may we atleast have something that make the choices we made on previous mass effect through the new game like did you leave Private Menos Avot or did you kill Rana Thanoptis and effects if the new one something like that would be nice liek a history lesson just to check if do remleber evrything when they wake up from cryosleep

Avatar image for lcrava

Of course EA won't properly remake the Mass Effect Trilogy. That's what gamers want and EA is incapable of doing something good for the industry. That and the fact that Peter Moore is a major douche (and another great contribution Microsoft made to the world).

Avatar image for naomha1

I was going to type some long, drawn out post but I've deleted it all and decided on something simpler.

You, Mr. Moore, can suck it. You've got no "eye" for games, you've killed dozens of beloved development houses, you've used your power in-house to constantly create turmoil for gamers everywhere. Those that want something great from one of their former development houses they loved and turned them into poo-eyed dopamin induced yawn fests. Most of your games have never seen a QA department, let alone ever get a PATCH to fix them properly. There's the oh-so-original Day 1 patch you've introduced into society. Oh, there's also the overpriced and over-valued DLC phenomenon you've told every gamer they absolutely "need". You've created a gaming society that has the attention span of a goldfish and you're collecting a really, really nice quarterly bonus based on those deeds. Job well done sir.

Are asking questions and answering them yourself fucking irritating? Yes they are.

Avatar image for ferna1234

Because EA is know for caring about what the public says.......... In another dimension which is upside down relative to this.

Avatar image for RogerioFM

Who actually wants a ME 1 remake?

Avatar image for radiioaktivman

@RogerioFM: Me. I've never played ME, and a remake would let me do that.

Avatar image for Dilandau88

@RogerioFM: I do

Avatar image for s9743469

And this illustrates why EA were voted worst company in America multiple times. They do not understand gamers nor how to connect with this audience.

Avatar image for Pooya1881

@s9743469: this comment illustrates how Americans view a lot of things, as in the worst company isnt the one doing many atrocities, causing the death and destruction all over the world but is the one which dont give them good service in their eyes. because its all about getting what u want, rest of the world or even ur country be damned. oh, how consumerism has blinded everyone.

Avatar image for s9743469

@Pooya1881: And this response illustrates the lack of understanding of irony.

Avatar image for obsidian_born

Seriously EA?? Being able to play Mass Effect 1-3 in 1080p 60fps is not going to stop me from playing one of my most anticipated games... You guys have the chops to hire some small remastering studio, I am sure... There is a lot of them this generation...

We could always start a "bandwagon" and not buy Andromeda until remasters are made... They would take the demand seriously then.

Please sell Bioware you filthy suits.

Avatar image for RabbiSchmuley

Ok, so you won't make easy money...right. I guess EA finds even easier money elsewhere

Avatar image for goon303

Do I like to ask questions and answer them with more questions? Yes I do. Or do I?

Avatar image for DETfaninATL

I know it's a bit off subject but speaking of easy money re-masters, howza 'bout a Demon's Souls re-master for PS4???

Avatar image for obsidian_born

I highly doubt we will ever see that happen... It is basically Dark Souls before Dark Souls existed and has multiple publishers... But I would shit my pants if it did happen. Hell even a 1080p 60fps remaster.

Avatar image for DETfaninATL

Speaking of easy money re-masters, howza 'bout a Demon's Souls re-master for PS4???

Avatar image for Neubmann

Ok first of all... Love how he answered 3 questions with another question. Such a PR/politician thing to do.

Second: This reasoning is pure PR crap. Mr. Moore is trying to stand on some moral high ground that simply doesn't exist for EA. "Moving forward?" "New IP and new experiences?" Please... If I printed out a list of every EA published game in the past 10 years and compared it to a random page in a phonebook, there's a good chance that the EA's list contains more numbers...

Third: There's this studio called Bluepoint who are incredibly adept at remasters and collections. I guarantee they'd take the trilogy and make it look new again. But of course, why spend money to make money when you're still making $$$ hand over fist on a shalllow trilogy collection and DLC that rarely goes on sale.

Fourth: Do you honestly expect us to believe ME: Andromeda isn't AT EARLIEST a Fall 2017 game? Please. We've heard about the studio turmoil, the departures, and the lead writer changing like 3 times. Three E3s and no gameplay? Come on... None of your excuses hold water, Mr. Moore.

Avatar image for coasterguy65

So just ignore the one remaster that fans actually want. Good business decision EA.

Avatar image for sofajockey

Ha. "[UPDATE] It turns out Peter Moore's interview containing these quotes was taped before Patrick Soderlund made his comments about EA's thoughts on remasters. We have updated the story."

Avatar image for Schwah

Does Moore frequently ask and answer his own questions? Yes he does.

Avatar image for chatphon

EA is like ,remaster is so easy money grab but nah it'd be a lot easier if we spend more time to carefully cut ME:A into small and big dlc lol, so no we aim for something more something future.

Avatar image for zanyboy786

@chatphon: totally agree, one 3rd will be the main game, 2 3rds will be dlc.

Avatar image for zanyboy786

I wrecken EA is just being a bunch of wankers

Avatar image for xbox360kb

Who needs remaster when you will have andromeda soon? Are gamers crazy? Do you want devs to make remasters of each game each time when new generations of consoles arrives instead of new, more complex and better games?

Avatar image for Isaac_Redfield

@xbox360kb:A lot of people really love to pretend that doing a remaster doesn't take away from any potential new works, and that everything can simply be outsourced to a developer that specializes in ports or remasters.

Avatar image for hardeman

look at EA trying to act like they are above it, isnt remastering what they have been doing to madden the last 13 years

Avatar image for Faye_Tallity

Ugh..that's why I won't get SSX 3 on PS4! </3...No wonder...

So we get that crap sequel instead! I need to buy oxygen tanks to even unlock certain mountain events! No more rewards system either. No incentive to do events. We don't get cool new clothes to spend money on, & the gear are just color differences. They don't actually make you faster, or get more trick points. Zzzzz....

And worst of all? You don't get to update just one character. You get thrown random characters to use!

Avatar image for Salt_AU

Well that comment must be music to EA shareholders and investors. As any purchase is, re-masters are a choice and in the case of Mass Effect and the upcoming release of Andromeda, it makes perfect sense to remaster the series both from the players perspective that would like to revisit the game on current hardware (or of course those that haven't played it) and from a also financial point of view. It would as he said be an easy buck, quite a lot of bucks actually. Remasters can be outsourced to other companies, I don't get his thinking behind not remastering the series.

Avatar image for BuyaPC

I'd rather have mass Effect and dead space remasters than like 75℅ of the new trash EA puts out. I havnt played a good EA game for a while now, maybe even since last gen when they actually put out good games . Also they need to get dead space 4 going already , they're wasting viscerals talents on garbage like hardline

Avatar image for Isaac_Redfield

@BuyaPC:I don't need any Mass Effect remasters on PC, since they still look pretty good (unless they could magically fix "oatmeal face" from the first game), but Dead Space has been looking rough for a long while now. There are also higher resolution textures for Mass Effect 2 & 3 already on PC.

Avatar image for GRADERBLADE13

@BuyaPC: I'd play dead space 2 again. Loved that game

Avatar image for wexorian

@GRADERBLADE13: Umm go and play it it??? or you sold your console ?? Keep your console don't sell it or GET A PC.

Avatar image for radiioaktivman

@wexorian: pc = Microsoft, no thanks, I'll stay with Apple computers. And I don't have an old console.

Avatar image for GRADERBLADE13

@wexorian: I should get it on pc you're right.
