Mass Effect: Andromeda Is Not the Start of a New Trilogy

BioWare also confirms the campaign supports offline play.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is not the start of a new trilogy for BioWare's spacefaring RPG series. This is according to creative director Mac Walters, who spoke to Game Informer about how Andromeda's story isn't similar in structure to the three games in the Commander Shepard series.

Andromeda's main character, Ryder, begins the game as an untested solider, with the story playing out like the traditional hero's journey. For the first Mass Effect, Shepard was already a known quantity in the game's universe. For Andromeda, the hope is that it will tell a contained story, Walters said.

That being said, he explained that BioWare could make more Mass Effect games in the Andromeda galaxy.

"At the end of this, we want it to feel like a story has completed," Walters said about Andromeda's story. "Yes, for the universe, there's much more you could explore, and we want to tease that, but it feels like its own story. It's like, 'Great. I had my Ryder sibling becoming-a-hero story. What's next? Is it going to be Ryder? Is it going to be something else? Who knows?'"

Producer Michael Gamble said Andromeda will tell a "different type of story" than what fans of the series are used to. "We want to leave the ending, and what we're doing with it, as a surprise," he said when asked if there would be multiple endings. "This is a different type of story, so it will be something different than the trilogy. We can't wait to hear what fans think."

Walters reiterated this in a video that Game Informer uploaded today. In that video, in which he answers 101 questions in six minutes, Walters also confirms that Andromeda's campaign can be played offline and that crew members and companions cannot die. He also teased that campaign co-op could work in the Mass Effect universe, though he didn't confirm any plans for Andromeda.

In other Andromeda news, BioWare has discussed the game's romance options, how it balances its shooter and RPG elements, potential DLC, and more. Additionally, BioWare has explained how Andromeda avoids dealing with Mass Effect 3's ending and revealed it will have a crafting system and an updated New Game+ mode.

In addition to a new trailer and a separate video that revealed some key story details, we've also learned about Andromeda's deluxe edition and the fact that loyalty missions are coming back. BioWare has also confirmed that a multiplayer beta will be held before launch.

The December issue of Game Informer is available to buy now.

Andromeda is scheduled to launch this spring for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. While not confirmed, multiple retail listings have suggested a March 21 release date.

More Andromeda gameplay footage will be shown during The Game Awards in early December.

Once they find out whether or not people like Ryder, they will decide on the sequels with this new launch.

What the hell? Already stating that crewmates can't die? Why don't you just tell us the ending?

... Unless this is meant to throw us off so we will get surprised. In that case what the hell again

Edit: 100+

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: While I agree with you that they should've kept it a secret, most of the characters in ME and DA can't die, so it isn't that surprising.

I love it how in this interviews they basically tell you 80% of nothing and give only one or two infos just to build up momentum until the release date.

I liked the original trilogy of this game but I'm bit worried about this next one. I thought the first trilogy gameplay got overly simplified and worst with every new releases. What's in store for us with this one?

I'm a fan of this. The trilogy was a great journey and experience but the ending left a feeling that maybe the story should have been more contained. There were a lot of expectations that simply weren't met. Perhaps a single game contained story will lower expectations but at the same time yield more possibilities since the options are only spanning one game oppose to 3.

Plus I don't want to be waiting years to complete this story and journey. It is taking them long enough to develope, complete, and release this game. How long would it take for them to complete a whole trilogy?

Avatar image for ergonomico

@scottyp360: it didnt say that its not going to be a trilogy but that he hopes that story will be "contained" and the ending is going to be "special". That could mean a lot of things, including: if we sell a lot its going to be a trilogy.

It's a pretty sad day when they have to say that a game that is part of a historically Offline Single Player RPG can be played offline.

Games getting shittier by the day, DLC and always online taking over, and Trump is officially president. What more can someone ask for.

@REDShadowG: Games are getting worse by the day? We've had some great games come out this year.

Avatar image for Mogan

@REDShadowG: Well, I was thinking more along the lines of XCOM 2, DOOM, Total War, Deus Ex, Titanfall 2, Uncharted 4, Gears of War 4, or Hitman. But sure, two games you didn't like probably means everything is going to hell. I mean, it's not like we can choose not to buy the bad ones or anything.

Avatar image for REDShadowG

@Mogan: I will agree with Doom, TW, DE and Tf2. I haven't tried the others nor do I care to since one is Windows Store, the other one is PS4 and I don't even know what tf XCom is.

But Doom and Tf2 are just another two shooters. Total War is just another rts. What's new or exciting there really.

Avatar image for Mogan

@REDShadowG: "and I don't even know what tf XCom is"

How can you say games are getting ****ty when you don't even know one of the best series to return to gaming in the past couple years is? It was just in the news recently too because XCOM 2 got a console port.

Avatar image for REDShadowG

@Mogan: Go educate yourself on what preference is. What you find the best someone else finds shitty. You're certainly the only one I've seen praising this game and calling it one of the best series in my six years of being a member of gaming websites.

Avatar image for Mogan

@REDShadowG: So you managed to miss all the XCOM articles here, and the 9/10 review for XCOM 2? AND Enemy Unknown a few years ago, which was made a big deal of because it was bringing back a classic series? Ignorance and preference aren't the same thing, and at the very least you should probably know this year's game release highlights before you start saying gaming has gone to ****.

If I'm the first person you've seen praising XCOM in the last six years, you haven't been paying attention.

@REDShadowG: I’m equally as shocked and dismayed at Trump’s presidency as I am happy that the corrupt, dirty, disgusting Rodham didn’t get in. Doesn’t matter who won the election, America loses either way. I feel for you guys.

And yes I agree with you about Andromeda, this is very disconcerting...

Avatar image for REDShadowG

@domiddian: it was a choice between two evils but trust, Hillary was the lesser one by far. The next four years will be painful for US and the world alike if Trump has any say about it, which is the case since Republicans basically control everything starting from January.

Avatar image for kittykat7

@REDShadowG: only a dumb a ss believes that the corrupt a politician is the lesser of two evils and hey dumb a ss this article is about a video game not about your butt hurt over trump being elected

Avatar image for domiddian
Domiddian

@REDShadowG: True, but the Republicans in both the Senate and House are still divided over Trump. They won't all support his policies. Plus, doesn't he need 60 votes in the Senate to pass a bill? And he only has something like 52 seats meaning he'll have to persuade a least eight democrats to support him on matters, which will be a big ask...

Avatar image for REDShadowG
REDShadowG

@domiddian: I certainly hope that it is as you say - half the republicans don't support him, democrats will be reluctant. So he will actually need to do something he hasn't done since he popped out of nowhere - use his brain, think before he speaks. But hey if US could pull through with Bush it can with Trump, it can't be worse, right.

If they can't die then no use bothering to release it as there is no point in caring about the main characters story arcs.

What in the ever loving hell? Companions and crew members cannot die? Then where the frip is the gravity in the narrative if we already know this? Great, so instead of one character having plot armor, (Liara) everyone has plot armor this time around.. Joy of joys.

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum

@HackedLife: They could still do that. With KOTORs I was dreaming that in 2nd game things would change according to events in the original game. It would be easier to not worry about the immediate consequences (having to juggle 100 meaningless minor characters we encounter making sure there are no bugs and stuff) but allow some major long-reaching changes like whether Rachni have conquered the entire universe or something like that. On different playthroughs some planets would be decimated, the main enemy could be different, the people i meet could be different

But yeah not gonna happen

I hope they are able to keep it all going but I think they might have the right idea of making everything contained but on the other hand I wonder if they can really end whatever's going on in the first game......seems like too much to bite off.......

Well if it's not going to be a Trilogy it better have the content of one then.
