Mass Effect: Andromeda Has Over 1,200 Speaking Characters

"When you look at the dialogue options, we're basically [at] the equivalent of Mass Effect 2 and 3 put together."

BioWare's next big RPG, Mass Effect: Andromeda, has considerably more speaking characters than Mass Effect 3, it's been revealed. Lead writer Mac Walters revealed this during PAX East, saying Andromeda has "over 1,200" speaking characters" compared to around 670 in Mass Effect 3.

"When you look at the dialogue options, we're basically [at] the equivalent of Mass Effect 2 and 3 put together," he said, according to PC Gamer.

Now Playing: Mass Effect: Andromeda - Launch Trailer

Producer Michael Gamble told PC Gamer that not only does Andromeda have more characters, but "the amount of stuff you and that character can talk about is also larger--especially the squad."

"We made sure the squad was beefy, and developed, and that you could do different things with them and then that information would basically carry through the conversations," he explained. "That was a large focus."

Pressed for more details on the 1,200 number, Gamble said these are not as low-level as shopkeepers, but instead "one step above that."

Players can encounter new characters in Andromeda by scoring "Andromeda Viability" points, which let you wake up colonists. Additionally, planets have Viability levels, and when this is high enough, you can create an outpost. This in turn unlocks new areas that feature more people to encounter.

Andromeda is almost here. The long-awaited game officially arrives on March 21, though Xbox One and PC players with an EA/Origin Access membership can play a 10-hour trial starting on March 16.

Now that the game is out and the dialogue is one of the unfixable weak spots, this isn't good news any more.

Those numbers probably show that Andromeda is another Inquisition just in space with awful quest givers with even more awful quests.

@MegaX-: Hmmm that makes me think. I played through Inquisition but it was the first Dragon Age game that I did not start another play through right away.... In fact I never went back to play it a second time :( well, thats no good.

It makes me thinks bioware is really worried about this game selling based on the amount of press they've been putting out. Seems like 2 more articles are up every other day.

@funkinslick:

Yep they do the same with movies. If you see a bunch of adds on TV about an up coming movie you can bank on them knowing it is a smeller and they are trying to get a lot of people to see the movie before the word gets out.

@funkinslick: Im a huge ME fan I play the original trilogy through completely like every few years when there is nothing new I want to play...... With that said, Im not very excited about this one simply because of the setting. I wanted an ME that shows the aftermath of the War with the Reapers. So I will wait on this one to see how it unfolds.

Quantity rarely trumps quality. Considering my opinion of Mr. Walters writing ability anything he might say does not encourage me at all.

@VV1LL14M:

Better yet, feed him to a pack of hungry Varen :)

It wasn't the really bad story of ME3 or its awful ending that really put me off about this clown, but his arrogance and the flaming of a very solid fan base that made it's displeasure of the story very known. The guy really thinks his crap does not stink and that the loyal fans that so strongly supported the game and paid his salary are just a bunch cry babies.

@luzarius: I'm tired of the short hair thing. I get that animating hair is probably hard, but Dragon Age: Inquisition was all short hair, and it all looked like plastic, and so far that's all I've seen in Andromeda too. Otherwise though, I don't think the characters look bad. My socks aren't getting knocked off over here, but I think they look about as good now as ME1's did 10 years ago.

All of the news about this game made me go back and play the original trilogy and I fear this installment will not measure up to Sheppard's story. They took us through this epic battle. Make us watch our decisions play a role in the plot all the way through the end and now its like it never happened. This new story starts between the events of ME 2 and 3 and then fast forwards over 600 years into the future on a different galaxy..... It makes me a little sad to be honest. I miss Sheppard...... they should have never made his story so immersive, I cant believe it myself the emotional toll this has taken on me lol. They could have at least taken the best ending carried some of those things over. Ok Im done crying.

@Mogan: unless they make this one so epic that it blows the original trilogy out of the galaxy you are probably right.

Didn't they say there'd be as many lines of dialogue as in ME2 & 3 combined? If they now have twice as many npcs as well then wouldn't that mean that each of them doesn't have more to say than before?

@PCsama: You mean EA Access? You aren't paying $5 just to play 10 hours of this one game.

@PCsama: That's not what I said though. You're paying $5 a month for more than just the early access.

@Mogan:

You say 'tow ma toe' he says 'tow may toe.' You still have to pay money if you want to play the demo, doesn't matter if you get other things included.

Looking forward to exploring every detail of this game.

(Of course you would like more dialogue Ninja. Everything you write is like a damn book.)
