Mass Effect 3 alternate-ending petition raises $35K for charity

Retake Mass Effect movement collects donations for Child's Play as a way to call for BioWare to make new endings for its latest sci-fi role-playing shooter.

A number of Mass Effect fans are upset with the way the latest entry in the series ended, and they're voicing their displeasure by giving to charity.

It's tough to argue against charity.
It's tough to argue against charity.

Members of the Mass Effect community have set up the Retake Mass Effect ChipIn fund, collecting PayPal donations for the Child's Play charity in order to call attention to their request for BioWare to make alternate Mass Effect 3 endings.

As of press time, the fund had raised more than $35,000 from more than 1,400 contributors. The donation drive will run until April 11.

The group takes issue with the current possible endings to the game, saying they don't provide a sense of closure, adequate explanation of what happened, or meet the expectations people have of Mass Effect games. As a result, they are asking for new endings that better explain story events, spell out how player decisions affected the outcome, and include "a heroic ending, which provides a better sense of accomplishment."

Founded in 2003 by Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins, Child's Play works to improve the lives of sick children through offering toys and games at a network of over 70 hospitals worldwide. For more on Child's Play, see the organization's official website.

As of press time, Child's Play and Electronic Arts had not returned requests for comment.

I'm one of those gamers who is not upset about the ending [okay maybe a little to upset and it was not what I hope for] and I did by the CE. I'm replaying the game as it is so I can get the true ending by raising my War Assents as high as it can go. No affiance Gamespot staff but all of the major games sites I been are giving ME3 a bad name on the same sex, ending, and DLC. All of this crap needs to stop and please talk about Games not just ME3 every single day.

Whether you support the petition or not, Child's Play is a great a charity and I'm glad that if anyone is to benefit from this insanity, it's them. I feel someone should donate ME3 to Child's Play now. For context, I do want a change from Bioware. Not to add options or change the ending, but at least to offer more than 15 seconds of a horribly rendered cut scene that disregarded everything I did.

mass effect 3? whats that? seriously cant believe that f'ng trash-of-a-franchise is moving so much things. This game never was something new, never had something appealing, has the same lame scenario as 5 movies that comes out a year ,has no replayability and probly is the most boring RPG-like game Ive played (played the 2nd,nothing memorable and deff not enough addictive to even TRY the third lol)

Interesting. Slap a "It helps the children" logo on anything and suddenly it's a worthy cause. What a terrible thing on two ends: Using Child's Play as a tool to garner support, and to undermine the creative direction of a team that has been working since 2007 to deliver a vision, one which everyone apparently seems to want to have a hand in. You want to talk about meddling with creative vision? Pester LucasFilm. I have accepted the ending delivered to me. It wasn't the ending I expected, but it was a grand exit to one of gaming's most iconic symbols.

People are actually paying bioware to fix the game they already bought. How stupid can you be?

Calling it now: you'll be charged 800 BioWare points for the alternate ending.

The only thing i can think of that may fix this outside of a DLC that builds on the endings would be if this ending is all a setup for the next series in the ME universe.

I have been thinking about the endings for some time now as I play through for a 3rd time. Part of me does like them with regards to Shepard...however, it flings poo in the face of every player who really wanted to see their choices play out and leave a solid effect on the galaxy and its inhabitants (not simply the effect of your final choice). The series is amazing and your choices profound and meaningful...until the last lets say 10 mins. This sudden abandonment of OUR choices and OUR Shepard's story just seems wrong. Like waking up and seeing the sky is orange and the sun is blue. Or finding out that your entire life, family, marriage, job was all just a crazy dream. Its way too shocking and I understand how a percentage of the ME fans are burning over it. I really love this series and that may be one of the things fueling the fire for players....but I relly hope Bioware creates a free DLC that expands the ending...leave the final choice but expand on what happens to the universe and it inhabitants....I dont wish pain on my LI but I would like to know what happened to them. Cont.

Lol. ME3's ending made me so mad, I'm gonna... I'm gonna... Donate money to Child's Play! Yeah! I don't get the logic... But this is good. I suppose?

Wow, even the endings are turning into DLC. Albeit in this case it is actually going to charity instead of EA.

While I personally have no REAL issue with the Mass Effect 3 ending (I admit it wasn't what I hoped, but at the end of the day the quality of the rest of the game made up for that in my mind.), I am glad to see that, rather then complain on forums or do the usual things people do, these people are actually helping a good cause and bringing attention to what THEY feel is an issue. This is a FAR more constructive way to draw attention to what these people feel is an issue. If this gets Bioware's attention and they release a DLC or something similar for Mass Effect 3 for this, I'm happy for them. If not, I'm still happy these people took it upon themselves to help others.

Don't fall for this crap! Imagine all publishers or devs doing this in the future, but instead you have to pay for the best ending. Idiots.

People need to get a life if they're upset that a game didn't turn out the way they wanted it to. And you people can't sit here and tell me you honestly give a rat's ass about sick kids or whoever is benefiting from this. All you really care about is getting the ending you imagined for a game, that the game's creators never had in mind for it.

Charity is good but i don't see how it's related to this. So people are paying to pressure bioware to make an alternate ending, and then, people'll have to pay for the actual dlc ending. I do not approve of this. it would be another story if the dlc is free though(which i highly doubt). Making a free alternate ending dlc would be the right thing to do now. Bioware should show how sorry they are and how grateful they are for the support of their customer, not taking this as a chance to ripping people off even further.

What's wrong with turning something negative into a positive. I could be crying in my cheerios, but helping sick kids makes me feel good. If nothing else comes from this, a bunch of kids are getting some happy.

Dumb reason, but who cares? Alternate endings and raising money for charity are 2 positive outcomes.

I"m sorry but that is the dumbest reason to raise money for anything that I have ever heard of. Better than nothing I guess, but there is a serious issue if that is what it takes to motivate you to give back.

A noble cause, but BioWare/EA stand to profit both off the press, and money for their reworked ending(s). Instead, they should be punished for delivering a rigid and inflexible game (story) which drives fans away in disgust. I don't see this going the direction intended, but one can always hope.
