Mass Effect 3 alternate-ending petition raises $35K for charity

Retake Mass Effect movement collects donations for Child's Play as a way to call for BioWare to make new endings for its latest sci-fi role-playing shooter.

A number of Mass Effect fans are upset with the way the latest entry in the series ended, and they're voicing their displeasure by giving to charity.

It's tough to argue against charity.
It's tough to argue against charity.

Members of the Mass Effect community have set up the Retake Mass Effect ChipIn fund, collecting PayPal donations for the Child's Play charity in order to call attention to their request for BioWare to make alternate Mass Effect 3 endings.

As of press time, the fund had raised more than $35,000 from more than 1,400 contributors. The donation drive will run until April 11.

The group takes issue with the current possible endings to the game, saying they don't provide a sense of closure, adequate explanation of what happened, or meet the expectations people have of Mass Effect games. As a result, they are asking for new endings that better explain story events, spell out how player decisions affected the outcome, and include "a heroic ending, which provides a better sense of accomplishment."

Founded in 2003 by Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins, Child's Play works to improve the lives of sick children through offering toys and games at a network of over 70 hospitals worldwide. For more on Child's Play, see the organization's official website.

As of press time, Child's Play and Electronic Arts had not returned requests for comment.

Some people feel the game's ending shouldn't change even though the end totally blow which this is the attitude Bioware and a couple of other game developers are counting on, who care if the ending suck when the overall aspect of the game is great. It is upsetting that knowing for the fact that they will get away with this kind of cut corners.

@cmterminator: lol listen to this bloke. They lied! Manipulated people! Hello? Its a video game. Play it, shut up and move on with your life. I'm sorry but this is just getting ridiculous with how obsessed and serious gamers are becoming.

Although Bioware is sticking with their original decision, they have acknowledged the voice of the fans and will "take into account" suggestions. Remember that there were other games that did this: Half Life 2, Fallout 3 (original), and there must be more out there. Let's give them breathing room and observe what they'll do next.

@axlroselm Ok, i agree there are many other great games which have bad elements, a bad ending perhaps. But did you see any game ending that stirs up such an outrage. The problem here is that bioware lied to their fan, their customer, everyone. They do not delivered what they have promised. Giving the game bad score only because of the ending is not justified because the game do have good points, and people are nice enough to do justice, that is why the game has decent user scores. Telling my friends to not buy the game does not cut it either. What about myself, i have already purchased the game. What people are doing here is demand bioware to right what they had done wrong. They should express their respect for their customer. And what they've done so far is nothing of the sort, all they did was bending the truth, trying to manipulate people thought.

When I saw this article's title, my jaw dropped. Now that I read it, that's not so bad. Still though, demanding to change the ending of any game is just plain silly.

To call this half assed would be an insult to crap that's actually half assed. This is the most quarter assed ending I've ever seen in a AAA game. You might as well slap a sticker that says "This is for making money, not having fun" on the corner of the cover.

@surrealme Well said my man. Like it or not, Bioware choose this ending. You cant tell them that "hey you must make it exactly what i desire". You have to open some space for developers creativity. Audiences can choose not to buy a creative product or to criticize it, but they are not entitled to put pressure of the producer to create according to their wishes. If there is not at least some space for creator activity (in contrast to audience or customer), the whole enterprise become meaningless.

I'm not saying the ending(s) should be changed, some people may like the ending(s), but maybe give those of us who were a little let down another option (add an ending). I also would have liked to have seen an update of the characters, like how their lives played out. And maybe answer some questions, I won't post them here, because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but there were several things that had me going "what the what!?!?"

Charity aside, its another case of gamers boasting about their self-entitlement because they didn't get something exactly how they wanted it. They're just video games and its becoming increasingly hard to sympathise with this community. Gamers need to wake up and stop trying to protest everything. When have we ever had a story about people showing deep satisfaction or really admiring the work of our developers?

@gc88 as opposed to 2nd or 3rd world problems? lol comforting sick kids comforts sick kids dumping money into 3rd world areas does nothing to fix the problems if you raise enough money to feed a starving country for one day(quite a feet) you only prolong their starving by one day to fix things the world would have to open it's borders allowing the free flow of labor causing places like the USA and England to fall in value rapidly well the outflow of people from poorer areas would raise prices and wages until the world hit a equilibrium across the board but you don't like that idea because then we wouldn't all be rich compared to them and they could take care of themselves without us lol

I like the way they're going about this because anything that raises money for charity is a good thing, but this seems to me like petitioning an author to change the ending of their novel and that's something I can't get behind. While artists depend on their audience they shouldn't be treated like they are owned by them. If an artist's vision is determined by the audience rather than by the artist it's no longer art. It's just consumerism.

It's great that they're donating to charity, but this is absolutely ridiculous. It's the story the writer's wanted to tell and you don't have to like it, but you also have no right to demand they change it.

I dont know. maybe you are right. But there are many great games out there that have a large fan base and have bad endings or many other bad elements too (gamepaly, graphics, etc). If we want to act on this attitude, all developers must firs release the game then change the inherent parts of the game because fans' resentment. If you dont like the ending give the lower score or tell your friends dont buy the game (If they think this is a big issue).

It was a bad ending, but Bioware did it on purpose. They left it open so they could maybe make ME4 sometime in the future. They didn't write themselves into a corner like some other sci-fi franchise *cough*HALO*cough*. Yes it sucked and no it didn't bring us players any closure but they took the safer potential sequel route. From a writing standpoint it was the safer thing to do.

@nster81 If you're gonna call somebody uneducated, at least spell it right. Aside from that these people need to chill out trying to hide behind "charity work" to bring attention to your petty little want for another ending to a video game. Trying to play that "oh we're doing it to give back" card is pitiful.

can't say if the ending should be changed(right at the end of the game but started a new game before i finished cause I'm afraid to see it with all the bad rep lol) but i can say this is the best way seen to protest in a long time just the way the are going about it should give them the right to do so beats service denial attacks by anonymous groups that's for sure

Because Axl, Mass Effect has a much larger fan base, along with a much different construct that was design to allow us to choose between a piss poor ending and a Positive heroic one. You are missing the point of what made ME what it is. Further more how do I get on this and donate some of my cash?

i still think they set the ending up for some sort DLC (how they will do it is beyond me) but i didn't think it was that bad yeah it left some things unexplained but also left it open for future games (not going to say how it ends don't want to spoil it for anyone)

Lol. This is stupid. Why change the ending? There are so many good games with bad ending! Instead of forcing Bioware to change endings, count it as a negative point for the game. Do you want Bioware make you a spoiled ending? If you know the ending (because you want Bioware make the ending you want), dont you think all the fun will be gone. Imagine you force James Cameron change the ending of Terminator 2 to the way you want it.

This is decent constructive criticism (rather than idiotic angst among uneducate whiners that has become commonplace on this matter). Personally, I enjoyed my Shepard's ending, though I can see how people want more closure. In my opinion, the comprehension and reasoning behind the Reapers was satisfying, as that's what manifested itself withing the fabric of the trilogy's story. In the end, being a loud mouth to the company that created it (their own material) and trying to tell them in an angry fashion to change their own IP isn't a respectable course of action. I suppose and update/DLC down the road for the outcry may not be a bad thing, but it may take time, patience, and a little bit of respect rather than a thumbs down with everything you consider "wrong" as a matter of differing opinions/prefences.

To all the people who have not played the games and loved the living hell out of them; you have no say in this matter, because you have no idea how much the series means to us fans. To end it the way they did is just plain cruel.

It's nice to see the gripes some have about the endings can result in something positive in the end, alternative endings or not. At the end of the day, Children are happier and we can even dream Bioware double the total amount of donations. I'm content with how the game ended but I fully support this cause.

@Junior_AIN if you have never played Mass Effect in your life, and any of the games, you need to shut your mouth and know your role. Most of us payed 90 dollars for the collectors edition, and have played Mass Effect since it begun, we deserve closure for the time and resources we invested in our save files.

Really? I have never played ME in my life, but it seems they got what they wanted, their ending is making their game stand out a lot more than it would otherwise. The ending of a video-game was bad? Turn off the console and move on with your life. Simple.

Using this charity as means to get signatures for an ending change is pathetic. You are essentially paying to have them make a new ending. Are you people dumb? Don't count on bioware listening either. The endings available are the endings we get. Suck it up and deal with it. Gamers whine way too much anymore and it's getting annoying. If you think you can make a better ending, then go do it yourself.
