Marvel's Phase 4 MCU Movie Releases Dates Revealed, Titles Coming This Summer

Eight confirmed dates, but which movies do they belong to?

Update: During an investor conference call on May 8, Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said that the titles of Marvel Studios' next slate of films would likely be announced "later this summer." While he didn't say exactly when the announcement would come, our best guess is Phase 4's films will be officially unveiled at Disney's D23 Expo, which is August 23-25. Earlier in the week, we got release dates for these movies, but without any specific names attached to those dates. Read on for a look at those dates and which movies we already know are in the works.

Now that Avengers: Endgame is finally out and Marvel Studios' Phase 3 is drawing to a close with the upcoming release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, the future of the MCU is a bit of a mystery. Not only did yesterday's Far From Home trailer imply the potential for an MCU-based multiverse--which could have huge implications for the future--we've also got a whole roster of upcoming Disney+ streaming MCU TV shows. Those shows, according to Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige, are going to directly impact and shape the future big-screen phases.

Now Playing: MCU Phase 4: Everything We Know About Marvel's Next Movies

In a press release sent out on Tuesday, Disney confirmed its upcoming movie release slate for Star Wars, Avatar, and Marvel. In the latter's case, that means we now have the release dates for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's upcoming Phase 4 films through 2022, although Disney did not connect any specific titles to these dates--or even confirm which movies will be out during this period. The schedule now looks like this for "Untitled Marvel films."

  • May 1, 2020
  • November 6, 2020
  • February 12, 2021
  • May 7, 2021
  • November 5, 2021
  • February 18, 2022
  • May 6, 2022
  • July 29, 2022

It's important to note that this list only includes Disney productions, so any upcoming Sony work--i.e. any Spider-Man movies after Far From Home--are not in the mix.

The roster of movies currently confirmed for Phase 4 includes a solo Black Widow film, likely one of the earlier 2020 releases; Black Panther 2, which probably holds one of the February dates in 2021 or 2022, given the first movie's Black History Month release. The recently announced Shang-Chi likely holds one of the later dates--we still only have a director attached to the project and no confirmed cast. The Eternals could occupy one of the earlier dates, given the recent blitz on casting news--but no confirmed production timeline has been released.

Also confirmed to be happening is Doctor Strange 2, which has Scott Derrickson tapped to return as writer and director, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which could hold one of the 2021 dates as well.

Of course, that only tallies up to six confirmed projects for the eight confirmed release dates, meaning we have at least two more movies yet to be announced in the upcoming phase.

In addition to Marvel, Disney also announced the schedule for their upcoming Star Wars films, all of the Avatar sequels, and once again delayed the release date of the X-Men spin-off film New Mutants. That will now come out in 2020, not long before the first of the MCU films dated above.

disney has really funny idea of a break. like month ago they said star wars will have a break and then they announced that in 2 years theyll do more biannual movies. pretty much the same thing with marvel saying that far from home ends phase 3 and then theres no rush for more. and then theres avatar with 1 movie in a decade but disneys plan is 6 movies in 10 years

what would have they said about the period between 1985-2000? i dont mean mcu or star wars needs that long but thats what you call a break

though i guess going from 3 movies per year to actually having a year with none is really good from disney. because that 3 movies per year is just unheard of

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: I enjoyed that 85-2000 break for Star Wars. It helped solidify the original trilogy as classics, even though they were campy. I wish we could go back to that. Anyway, the answer is money... it will always be about money.

@5tu88sy: Why should it? With few exceptions, the MCU movies have ranged from good to great. If you don't like superhero stuff, there are plenty of other movies out there for you.

I'm wondering how long they'll wait to recast the original Avengers. Not that I want to see them recast, but they've been playing their characters for about 10 years or more now. I always figured they'd use their next phase to start a fresh slate, unless they feel they have a few more characters they haven't really used to pick up the slack. I wonder if Disney and Sony will work out a deal to let Spider-Man be a big part of the new phase, his actor is fairly young and could continue to play a long term, important role in the MCU.

Sony is probably making mad cash from Disney and Marvel, basically begging to let Spider-Man be in the MCU.

Great. Even more high budget CGI action drivel that will break box office records.

Meanwhile, something like Blade Runner 2049 fails financially... This it so fuckin' sad.

@Berserk8989: In most art forms, there is a range from entertainment to high art, with a correlation to financial success. I got over complaining about Britney Spears being more successful than Radiohead after college. Give it a shot.

@Berserk8989: ok we get it. You’re intellectually superior than most people and have better taste in movies. No one cares.

Only care about GotG 3 out of the titles mentioned. Probably check out Black Widow too, depending on how it looks.

Hopefully they have something bigger planned too.

Wow. Only two next year? Didn't think they would reduce their annual cash cows, even if they go back up to three the next two years.
