Marvel's Avengers Team Knew That Winning Fans Over Would Be Hard

Spider-Man crossover rumors have also been shot down.

Marvel's Avengers has had a rocky road since its initial reveal, in large part because fans of the comics and movies were not happy with how the characters looked when they were first shown off. Players took issue with the character models and the costume designs, and the team at developer Crystal Dynamics took note. [Update: The Avengers game has been delayed until September 2020.]

In a new interview with Gamesradar+, creative director Shaun Escayg has spoken about the challenge of showing off these character designs after the Marvel Cinematic Universe has established the current Marvel aesthetic so fully for most fans. "I mean, we knew we had that challenge, right?," Escayg says. "We're going up against a 10-year history of movies. And you know, people forget really quickly, but when the first movie came out, they had the same problem. People were upset with the way these heroes looked. So we knew going in that we would always have that struggle." But he says that the focus was more on their "original storyline," and making sure that they "stay true to that DNA of the characters in the comics."

Now Playing: Why Ms. Marvel Is The Real Hero Of The Avengers Game

Studio head Scot Amos has previously talked to us about how the costumes have changed since the game's initial reveal. The designs were noticeably different a few months after we first saw them, with designs that are a bit closer to what we've seen in the films. However, the main character of the game, Ms Marvel, has not made her way to the cinematic universe yet. That's set to change when her Disney+ show launches next year.

There are some other interesting facts brought up across the interview. Escayg says that the appearance of next-gen consoles in 2020 was not of particular concern to how this game was made, and makes it clear that the game will not cross over with Insomniac's Spider-Man, although there's the possibility of bigger collaborations in the future. "Any collaboration with great studios excites everyone at Crystal [Dynamics]. How do we make this bigger? How do we make this much more engaging for the fans and continue to do so?"

Marvel's Avengers will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 15, 2020.

I’d really rather have an Avengers game that played like Spider-man, but with Avengers.

Give me a constantly open world. Give me crime to fight. Give me a campaign that involves protecting New York from an escalating threat. Each hero should have strengths and weaknesses, and you can play and free roam cooperatively.

Why in the world has this not been done yet?

He clearly does not know what he talking about...not sure if that makes me more concerned than I already am for this game. At the very least, it looks like they are taking the correct route with multiple costume options. As long as there are decent looking costumes, comic, MCU, or other that are accurate and look decent, I will be happy.

As for Spider-Man, if he's ruling out Spider-Man coming to this game, than that would be a pretty big mistake.

What is Escayg talking about? From what I recall, the response to the look of the various Avengers in their first films was hugely positive; I don't recall any kind of backlash at how they looked at all. I suspect he's created this self-serving fiction just to soften the blow of the negative reaction to Crystal Dynamics' take on the Avengers aesthetic. Moreover, I have a feeling that Marvel's Avengers is going to be a very middling game, if that. They seem to be trying to have their cake and eat it too by simultaneously going for their own, unique take on and story of The Avengers while at the same time relying on the communal, shared knowledge and memory of who each of the individual Avengers are as characters so they can jump right into a scenario well past origins with all heroes already working together with an established history. They're basically skipping the part where you establish character motivation and focus on character development so they can get right to the meaty fully-established Avengers team bit, and yet they want it to be unique and original. I don't think it's going to work well.

Dude is making his argument out of complete lies. I don't remember hearing anyone decrying the casting or aesthetics of the Avengers characters as they premiered in their solo films. Iron Man was the first one, and most of the world had barely heard about the character but took to him right away as well as the Iron man design. Everyone familiar with Iron Man thought it was perfect casting and design.

The Thor movie was not as well recieved, but it seemed like Hemsworth was universally liked in the role and I remember hearing very few complaints about the costuming. Captain America had probably the worst costume, but people rationalized it since it was taking place in the 1940s, and everyone loved Evans in the role.

I don't remember anyone decrying the design or casting of hulk or Black Widow at all.

@CashPrizes: Exactly. Who is this guy fooling? The only one that may have had a poor outfit was Captain America. They didn't get the mask right and the wings looked poor. But that was it. Everyone else looked spot on with good casting. I'm not sure what he is thinking.

Ms. Marvel as the main character is a huge mistake.

@Poodger: I completely agree, this shouldn't even be called Avangers. She's just a token character, I don't know why they would make her the main character.
