Marvel's Avengers Glitch Accidentally Reveals Player IP Address
Crystal Dynamics is urging Marvel's Avengers players to stop streaming the game online until a hotfix is deployed to fix the glitch.
Marvel's Avengers players on PS5 should be wary of streaming the game online as a glitch in the latest patch is causing sensitive information, including usernames and IP addresses, to display on-screen.
The official Marvel's Avengers Twitter account announced the issue after users, including Forbes contributing writer Paul Tassi, reported seeing their information being displayed at the top of their screens for all to see. Developer Crystal Dynamics confirmed it's investigating and urged players to "refrain from streaming" until a hotfix is deployed on June 23 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET. Though it's been confirmed to impact PS5 players in particular, it's unclear if this glitch affects other platforms.
We are currently testing a solution to the issue of personal information, including the player's IP address and username, being displayed on screen on PS5 and plan to deploy a hotfix tomorrow at around 8AM PT.— Marvel's Avengers (@PlayAvengers) June 22, 2021
This is bad for a number of reasons, as someone's IP address could lead to that person being doxxed if the information is shared publicly. Doxxing is not uncommon among gamers, and this wouldn't be the first time a company has been responsible for the accidental leakage of personal information.
Crystal Dynamics said it will announce via its social channels when the issue has been resolved. We've reached out to publisher Square Enix for comment and will update this post if we hear back.
This glitch comes off the heels of the release of Marvel's Avengers' V1.8.0 patch, which introduced new content to the action-adventure game. This includes a new Villain Sector to clear out, an upcoming Cosmic Threat Event starting on June 24, and a reduction to required gauntlets needed to complete the Mega Hive. There are also adjustments to combat and multiplayer matchmaking.
