Disney+ will improve the quality of Marvel movies that are currently available on its service by adding an Imax signature sound by DTS this year.

This big change, Variety reports, comes from a partnership between Disney Streaming, Imax, and Xperi's DTS audio-tech subsidiary. The goal of adding enhanced audio is to mimic the effect of watching movies in the theatre that will be "specially calibrated" to ensure that "filmmakers’ creative intent is fully optimized for an Imax-quality presentation."

Imax Enhanced titles on Disney+ will get a free upgrade with Imax signature sound by DTS on supported platforms sometime this year, such as Imax Enhanced-certified TVs from Sony and Hisense, as well as certified AV receivers from Denon, Marantz, and JBL.

Among the Marvel movies getting the new treatment are

  • Iron Man
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Thor: Love & Thunder
  • Doctor Strange
  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp
  • Captain Marvel
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  • Black Widow
  • Black Panther
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame

Wakanda Forever will be joining Disney+ on February 1. The only non-Marvel movie that has been confirmed for Imax signature sound is Pixar's Lightyear. It's unclear right now if Disney+ plans to add more.

"This unique collaboration extends our long-standing relationship between Disney and Imax, and we look forward to delivering this new immersive audio experience alongside premium playback quality for current and future titles to our audiences around the world,” said Jerrell Jimerson, Disney Streaming’s EVP of product.
