Marvel Boss Says What Follows Phase 3 Of The MCU Will Be "Very Different"

"It might be a new thing."

For nearly a decade the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been structured via 'phases', with overlapping characters and storylines. The MCU is currently in Phase 3, but now Marvel boss Kevin Feige has revealed that what follows might be very different.

Speaking to Collider, Feige said that the studio was currently focused on completing Phase 3 in 2019, but hinted that the Marvel universe could go in a different direction after this.

Now Playing: You Won’t Believe Who Has Worn The Infinity Gauntlet!

"Right now, [it starts] with where we wanna take the stories," he said. "Certainly as we get to Avengers: Infinity War there will be a sense of a climax. By the time we're at the untitled Avengers 4, 22 movies will have encompassed the first three phases of the MCU. And what happens after that will be very different. I don't know if it's Phase 4, it might be a new thing.

"We have an idea [of what the MCU looks like post-Infinity War], and it's gonna be very, very different."

Avengers: Infinity War is currently in production, and hits theaters on May 4, 2018. The movie was originally set to be released in two parts, shot back-to-back. However, the fourth Avengers movie has since become a separate film, and last week it was confirmed that it wouldn't enter production until after Infinity War wraps. Both movies will be directed by the Russo brothers, who helmed the last two Captain America films.

In related news, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealed last week that he would be back to make the third movie in Marvel's space adventure series. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives next week, and the Guardians team will also appear in Infinity War.

Take a break. Whatever new group of heroes you have in store won't beat the X-Force.

I can see a lot of solo movies, but nothing building to massive movies like Avengers or Infinity Gauntlet. Aside from possible bringing RDJ and Ruffalo back for 1 final film each, got to think the majority of the cast from the first 3 phases are out.

That leaves :

Black panther 2&3

Dr. Strange 2&3

Antman 3

Captain Marvel

Inhumans

Nova - ?

Adam Warlock - ?

It's hard to see where these characters can tie into a story arc as big as Infinity Gauntlet or any other major event from phases 1-3.

Honestly, they need to give the MCU at least a 3-4 year break after Phase 3.

I've been a big comic book nerd since I was a kid and have enjoyed the vast majority of the MCU movies...but people are going to grow tired of this shit pretty soon.

@TrueLink: beleive they mean diversity for diversity sake. If they replace every white male actor with females of color for the sake of having more females of color and no legitimate in-story reason and then take to social media congratulating themselves for being so diverse and progressive, it won't sit well with the majority of humanity that doesn't particularly care one way or another about race and sex and don't obsess over them like progressives.

Cast the best person for the part. As long as the actor doesn't violate a defining characteristic of the character, then who cares about the rest. Even then, if the actor is top-notch, they could even pull off a change or two. Heimdall for example. "skin as white as pure alabaster, fairest of the gods." Idris Elba is certainly not "the whitest of the gods," lol, but I think he was perfect for the part.

@giin: While I agree with you in concept, there are people who don't want any more women or non-white characters or just don't want anything to ever change. That's why I inquired.

I also don't think its as simple as you state it here. Who determines if someone is the best for the part and what are the most important characteristics?

When Sony was casting for Amazing Spider-Man, there was a large push by fans for Donald Glover to take on the role, but this had a lot of kick back due to his race. Personally, I don't think Peter Parker's race is a defining characteristic of the character. But in the end Sony decided that the world wasn't ready for a black Spider-Man -- a decision that led to Miles Morales being created in the Ultimate universe. Speaking of which, when Miles appeared there was a lot of push-back against him. But now he is a beloved character that people refer to as the 'right' way to create new diverse characters instead of just doing it for diversity (ironic, considering Miles was created specifically to add diversity).

On the other hand I understand the frustration with mass changes. The number of character swaps Marvel has gone through over the past three years can very reasonably make a reader feel like the world they love is just slipping through their fingertips. I also understand the difficulty people have with dealing with these stupid "my way or the highway" people who blow up the internet creating issues like calling Iron Fist racist for casting a white lead. Danny Rand's race isn't a defining characteristic (it's actually the least defining considering his adopted heritage), but calling a show that hasn't come out yet racist because they hired a white lead is just asinine.

In the end I agree with hiring the best person for the role. In that belief, I don't think people should be chastising these movies based on their casting choices until they can actually see enough of the actor to make an informed decision. Who knew that The Ancient One would be a British woman? I didn't, but Tilda Swinton crushed it.

@mentalrevolt: You can't know how fun the team can be if you think any of their movies are representative of them at their best. There's no reason an MCU F4 has to look like any of the adaptions so far.

@mentalrevolt: Outside of a couple bumps in the late 2000s when they got lazy, Fox has done a great job with the X-Men franchise.

Fantastic 4 on the other hand... that's a different story.

@TrueLink: Can't say I agree I really don't want to see any X-Men movies again except maybe Logan and Deadpool. Even if they got those characters right it was Wolverine's last appearance and there's still so much they should've done so as afar as I'm concerned Marvel's mutants are wasted at Fox.

I really hope the gameplay is as good as back when I remembered COD :o That screenshot looks pretty promising, but I can't really make any deductions since it's just a few low quality screenshots.

Clones, time-travelling, multiverse and hero juniors incoming. No one can follow.

I think they should just put the current characters on shelf and use the other ones. Blade, Namor, perhaps Fantastic Four will be free. Then 10+ years later reboot Cap, Iron Man etc. if need be. Just none of those convoluted comic tales thanks.

Or maybe a bunch of new heroes? Stan Lee's time is also (unfortunately) coming to an end, so maybe it would be time for someone new to create something. And not just female versions or black versions or something.

@mentalrevolt: No I'm saying that the company is still so reliant on characters invented 50+ years ago. There should be new Stan Lee's in Marvel house.

Or will we still in year 2300 look at Cap, Spidey, Hulk and the gang? A little newer guys like Blade being just sidenotes?

Why not create a black transgender Muslim superhero called "Unbeatable" and make him/her/zir "everything proof". This way you hit multiple check boxes and we can all get on with our lives.
