Marvel Boss Says What Follows Phase 3 Of The MCU Will Be "Very Different"

"It might be a new thing."

For nearly a decade the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been structured via 'phases', with overlapping characters and storylines. The MCU is currently in Phase 3, but now Marvel boss Kevin Feige has revealed that what follows might be very different.

Speaking to Collider, Feige said that the studio was currently focused on completing Phase 3 in 2019, but hinted that the Marvel universe could go in a different direction after this.

Now Playing: You Won’t Believe Who Has Worn The Infinity Gauntlet!

"Right now, [it starts] with where we wanna take the stories," he said. "Certainly as we get to Avengers: Infinity War there will be a sense of a climax. By the time we're at the untitled Avengers 4, 22 movies will have encompassed the first three phases of the MCU. And what happens after that will be very different. I don't know if it's Phase 4, it might be a new thing.

"We have an idea [of what the MCU looks like post-Infinity War], and it's gonna be very, very different."

Avengers: Infinity War is currently in production, and hits theaters on May 4, 2018. The movie was originally set to be released in two parts, shot back-to-back. However, the fourth Avengers movie has since become a separate film, and last week it was confirmed that it wouldn't enter production until after Infinity War wraps. Both movies will be directed by the Russo brothers, who helmed the last two Captain America films.

In related news, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealed last week that he would be back to make the third movie in Marvel's space adventure series. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives next week, and the Guardians team will also appear in Infinity War.

There's something to be said for quitting while you're ahead and giving your franchise a real, satisfying ending.

There's also something to be said for making loads, and loads for money too, I guess.

I would hope whatever comes after, at some point we see a return of Mandarin..the real Mandarin and have that epic fight we got cheated out of in IM4......just saying....

I think all this means is they wanna slow down a bit and get back to hero stories, having each movie be its own thing and limit the number of event movies....not be forced to have the movies release one or more a year every year but 1 every other year or something....

personally the way I see it, Infinity War is in sight and that's exciting but whatever happens I'm game......keep making these fun movies and I'm in....even if I have to wait a little longer for em.....

@darthrevenx: they need to snatch back all the characters Fox owns and give us AvX on the big screen. How long are they going to let Fox studios ruin characters before they say enough is enough? They've already been turning x-men into the shittiest characters ever adapted into a movie as it is, I'd love to finally see some redemption.

Gotta guess he means the stuff we've seen in the comics - all the heroes getting replaced with Buzfeed teenagers.

What big baddies does Marvel have on Thanos scale? Galactus is owned by FOX but who else is there that could be a massive threat? Maybe Dracula could face off against Blade, I dunno

@gamingdevil800: Masters of Evil stuff is one option. Having Red Skull come back and unite Loki, Mandarin (the real one), MODOK, Kingpin and Kang could be a pretty good team, plus ofc some henchmen like Rhino and Taskmaster to cause some chaos. Is the normal risk of having too many guys, but it could be done with patience.

@louixiii: Captain America isa real villain from the beginning, thanks to Red Skull who used the cosmic cube to rewrite Captain America's history.

@MMX377: No, Marvel is being vindictive because nobody like the new Captain America and they want Steve Rogers back.

@RossRichard:Well, they're terrible Marvel writers. Everyone thought America was represented something like we believe in everything we're standing for, like he did. Now look at his moral. I felt betrayed when I read some comic book news. I know it's a fictional character, but everyone has a moral and a role model we idolize, respect, and love. Something like that. Still, I don't know where to believe....

If they want Steve Rogers back, won't he be called "Captain America" anymore?
