Martin Scorsese's New Netflix Movie Gets First Trailer, And It's Unlike Most Of His Other Work

Pretend It's a City, about his longtime friend author Fran Lebowitz, is due out January 8, 2021.

Noted gangster film/digital de-aging enthusiast and Marvel movie hater Martin Scorsese will be bringing a surprise new documentary to Netflix in two weeks on January 8. Pretend It's a City, about Scorsese's longtime friend author Fran Lebowitz, is a "furiously funny guidebook every New Yorker has at one point wished for."

In the context of quarantine viewing, the film--which has Lebowitz wander around NYC and offer her observations and philosophies on her surroundings--looks to unintentionally double as a historical document of what life was like in New York before the pandemic. Check out the trailer below to get a taste of the movie's free-wheeling flavor.

The official synopsis offers a bit more shading and context for the film: "Pretend It's a City checks in with a classic urban voice on subjects ranging from tourists, money, subways and the arts to the not-so-simple act of walking in Times Square. (There is a right way to do it.) Along the way, Lebowitz's own past comes into focus: a life marked by constant curiosity and invigorating independence."

The film also stands as an unusual entry in Scorsese's filmography. While known for being a director who does not often make sequels, Pretend It's a City is a follow-up to 2010's Public Speaking. Public Speaking was another fly-on-the-wall documentary about Lebowitz, only--as the title suggests--composed of interviews and clips from various speaking engagements.

Pretend It's a City will hit Netflix on January 8, 2021. Scorsese has new projects in the works for Apple, some of which are set to begin filming in February 2021.

I like how he’s labeled a “Marvel Movie Hater” just because he rightly criticized those movies a little. How dare anyone tell the truth about those movies. Are they entertaining? Sure. Are they actual good cinema? Hell no. Not one of those movies will ever be considered a classic. Scorsese has made classics.

@justthetip: I'm sorry but Iron Man is a classic and if you don't consider the Marvel movies good "action" cinema then I'd hate to see what you like. Remember, cinema isn't just one category, it's a spectrum.

@Lord_Sesshy: This is why I honestly hate Marvel fans. As soon as you state the flaws of the films (the cliché plots, the mediocre fighting scenes, the terrible dialogue and ECT), they act like you have bad taste.

Compare the whole lot of Marvel films to a single Scorsese's picture and you can easily see why they are terrible. They are just products created to make millions at the box office. Nothing more, nothing less.

I would really hate to see what you like, as you sound incredibly stupid and close-minded. You are defending a brand, and you are acting like you are superior because of that.

Sorry to break it to you bruh but "Iron Man" is not a classic. Not even close to be one under any circumstance. You need to better understand what the concept of "classic" means in an art form like Cinema. Read a book about it, or at least check some IMDB list on the best 100 films in History to grasp the concept.

Sounds interesting. Lebowitz is pretty brilliant in her own right too.

Marvel movie hater? He never said that. From Gamespot's own article:

"Scorsese started off by stating that he does not detest Marvel..."

@so_hai: Well, I don't detest you. Aren't you going to thank me for that? LOL

It's a pretty weak-tea "compliment" don't you think?

Sounds unwatchable.

Big narrative directors doing documentaries are usually a miss. The skillset rarely translates. You don't see Ken Burns trying to direct a mob film with DeNiro and Pesci, after all.

Yeah, and when people talk about great Scorsese movies, no one mentions The Last Waltz for some odd reason...

Because as great as "The Last Waltz" is, he's made a large number of even greater movies? Documentarians would kill to have a "Last Waltz" on their resumes. It's just Scorsese's misfortune(?) to have also made "Taxi Driver," "Goodfellas," "Raging Bull," "King of Comedy," etc.

@phattsao: Because it's a documentary. Most people don't mention documentaries at all, of any kind, by any director, when listing their favorite movies.

That being said...good lord do I love The Last Waltz hehe

@phattsao: Omg the last waltz is my favorite movie of all time. Definitely Scorsese's magnum opus.

It talks about idk I haven't watched it I'd rather pull a daniel craig and slit my wrists rather than to watch something with bob dylan and neil young

@phattsao: Except Scorsese has a long, successful track record as a documentarian, from The Band's "The Last Waltz" to the "Personal Journey" miniseries to the Dylan documentaries and the ones about the Stones and George Harrison.
