Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon is one of the most-anticipated upcoming big-budget movies, and now we've learned a little more about it. Writer Eric Roth spoke to Collider about the movie, which he believes could be "one of the great movies" of our time.

Roth said he's been working on the movie for five or six years already, and it's finally set to begin filming in Oklahoma later this month. He said he's feeling confident that Scorsese has something special in the works with Killers of the Flower Moon.

"I just think he's going to make--and obviously I would say this--but I think [of] all my work, this one could be one of the great movies," he said. "I really mean that. I think it has all the ingredients, which I don't want to jinx it, but the story is so important."

Killers of the Flower Moon is set in 1920s Oklahoma during a time when the Osage Nation Native American tribe found oil under their homeland. After this discovery, high-ranking members of the Native American group were murdered one by one. The story is based on real events and is adapted from the book by David Grann.

Roth went on to say that Killers of the Flower Moon could be "probably the last Western that would be made like this." Combined with its social commentary, the violence, and the environment surrounding it, "I think it'll be like nothing we've ever seen," Roth said.

"So this one is, to me, one for the ages," he said.

Roth also discussed the behind-the-scenes change that happened on Killers of the Flower Moon, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jesse Plemons swapping roles. Plemons is now playing the Texas Ranger Tom White, while DiCaprio will play Ernest Burkhart, a central character in the murder of Osage Nation members.

Some speculated that Plemons' Tom White is the lead character, but Roth doesn't completely agree. The Tom White and Ernest Burkhart parts are about equal.

"I wouldn't say [Plemons is] the lead. I would say that he was the designated hero," he said. "But yeah, I think that's fairer because I think the parts are pretty equal and they were always equal to a certain extent, and Leo's part is very complicated and very interesting. It's a smart part for a smart actor to play."

Another lead character in Killers of the Flower Moon is William Hale, a dastardly man who was convicted of murder. Robert De Niro will portray him.

Killers of the Flower Moon is coming to Apple TV+, but it's not expected to release for a while. In other news, the movie recently welcomed four additional cast members, including the singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson.

Killers of the Flower Moon is just the latest high-profile movie headed exclusively to Apple TV+. The company also recently announced the Brie Larson series Lessons in Chemistry, while Ridley Scott's Napoleon Bonaparte movie starring Joaquin Phoenix is also set up at Apple. The Will Smith slavery movie Emancipation is also coming to Apple TV+.
