Mario Lemieux signed as NHL 2002 spokesperson
The legendary Pittsburgh Penguins star will be the cover athlete for the latest game in EA's hockey series.
Electronic Arts has announced that it has signed hockey Hall of Famer and current Pittsburgh Penguins center Mario Lemieux as the official cover athlete for its upcoming game NHL 2002. Lemieux will appear on the packaging and take part in the advertising and marketing of the game, which will be released on the Sony PlayStation 2 and the Microsoft Xbox.
"I'm looking forward to being a part of NHL 2002," Lemieux said. "My kids love EA's games and I'm enjoying the experience. This is new and exciting for me--the technology is amazing and EA has done a great job capturing the essence of hockey.''
"We are honored to work with an athlete as gifted as Mario,'' said Jeff Karp, vice president of EA Sports marketing. "He brings tradition, tenacity, excitement, and leadership to NHL 2002 and is a welcome addition to the ranks of other elite EA Sports cover athletes such as Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods."
The PS2 version will be released in September, while the Xbox version will be available in December.
