Now Playing: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Video Review

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's latest update is out now, and it makes a rather intriguing change: one Inkling Girl animation has been tweaked to remove a gesture that is deemed offensive in a number of countries.

The expression--which involves raising a clenched fist while the other arm holds the raised bicep--was used by Inkling Girl as a celebratory sign. However, the "Italian salute" is considered offensive in some territories, including France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and much of Latin America.

The gesture has been replaced by a simple fist pump, and photos from NeoGAF user Neiteio show the difference between the pre- and post-patch versions.

A few other minor changes were also included in the update, such as starting positions in online races, invincibility periods after a spin-out, and Mii facial expressions. Take a look at the full patch notes below.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe v1.1 patch notes

  • Opponents' names are displayed in the rear view mirror view in online matches.
  • Invincibility period after a spin-out or crash is longer in online matches.
  • Up to two players can spectate a friend group while they wait to join.
  • Worldwide and Regional modes add players to Mirror and 200cc matches less often.
  • Can now properly create a friend lobby when you have 100 or more friends.
  • Inkling Girl's animation has been adjusted.
  • Starting positions in online races now properly reflect the order in which players join.
  • Driver Miis now properly showing facial expressions.
  • Tournament clock now properly reflects real-world time.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has proved popular since its release in April, going to the top of the UK, Australian, and US sales charts. In our review, Kallie Plagge said Nintendo's racer was already a "great racing game" when it was released in 2014 on Wii U, but the overhaul of Battle Mode makes it "well worth reinvesting yourself in Mario Kart 8 on Switch." How do games that are physical versions get patched?

The snowflakes sure are on a roll. Hopefully rolling right into a ravine full of scary, nasty, dirty things.

edit: In all seriousness, this is why decent developers stay far, far away from Nintendo. After Iwata-san's passing, one would think Nintendo would have changed. Nope, the cycle repeats.

@soulfulDAGGER: Nintendo is to the video game industry what Disney is to the animation industry. Kid friendly environments with no "adult references" in their products.

Especially Disney after that golden penis incident on The Little Mermaid's VHS cover. Or that topless woman in one of their animated movies (uhh... forgot the name, it starred two mice going on an adventure or something), or that "sex" cloud in The Lion King. Heck, Disney has a lot.

Not for nothing South Park made Mickey Mouse an antagonistic mouse selling "sex" to kids in one of their episodes. They must smoke a lot of drugs to get such ideas.

The fist pump they replaced it with is offensive to people without arms.

@mirage_so3: You don't have a legitimate collective culture of being offended by fist pumps. Gather literally millions of people around the world that feel the same way you do over centuries of social norms, then we can start talking.

Go get educated kid.

@chaosbrigade: Your ignorance offends me kid. Many people are missing arms and your attitude is very offensive. Educate yourself.

@chaosbrigade: Do you have any idea how hard it is to live without arms? How hard it is to simply type a comment on a website? You are an insensitive asshole.

Avatar image for chaosbrigade

@mirage_so3: If you have no arms you wouldn't be playing a video game, therefore you will never even know of characters that have arms in the game.

FAIL.

@chaosbrigade: People can still have eyes even if they are missing their arms. It's offensive to SEE.

Yeah, well people would have been up in arms if they'd shipped it in the US and she was giving everyone the finger (the fact that you have to blur the gesture out on late night TV there makes most of us laugh), so it makes sense - but of course, because it's internet comments, people who aren't from the territories mentioned think it's stupid to remove something than means anything from Up Yours to F**k You from a kid friendly game.

Either the gesture had to be changed or the age rating, Nintendo's not as thick as half of the posters here.

What baffles me the most is, Nintendo used to be so strict on this that many things that only Nintendo would deem offensive would be straight up removed from the game or it wouldn't get published.

Wasn't that gesture the /rude (or whatever) for Male humans in WoW way back when? Or am I just misremembering things?

Edit: Guess I was right.

Yeah, if you're in one of those regions, Squid Girl is actually flipping people off. I'm normally against censorship, but this is move actually makes sense.

Why are people so thin skinned?

Avatar image for soulfulDAGGER

@savagerodent: They aren't thin skinned, they're clever trolls. Most, if not all who complained about it are hypocrites. I'm sure they're browsing history would prove it. It's those people whom were brought up and raised by Youtube and other forms of social media. A narcissist mind set, trained to complain and tattle-tail about things to seek attention as a means to justify their existence. It's the Facebook, Twitter, social media self-glorification, waiting for a thumbs up generation. Also known as envy

Avatar image for consolehaven

@savagerodent: Yes, they do. It's just as common as saying fu*k you or giving someone the finger. Something many children learn that it's offensive by age 6-7 if not sooner.

Avatar image for savagerodent
SavageRodent

@consolehaven: I mean if it's so common, then why was the gesture put in in the first place? How did it get past the ratings board without getting a higher ESRB rating? Unless it takes more than a simple gesture to increase the rating.

@savagerodent: But where are you from?

Avatar image for deactivated-598cead82c493

@savagerodent: Hmm yoi must've been an extremely boring child.

It's a minor change for the sake of offence or potential imitation, nothing wrong with that in a game with such a low age restriction.

Years ago, no problems, like how lax the age rating is on something like FF7.

Avatar image for savagerodent
SavageRodent

@shaundewey: I knew of gestures and words, but I had parents that actually scolded me for doing said gestures or saying bad words, something that seems quite lacking in today's society.

I guess if a kid knew about it, they would give more attention to it, so I guess I can see that. While I've known about something like this for years that it's not a big deal, therefore I don't think about it.

Avatar image for deadkingdg

@savagerodent: You were just a good child. A lot of kids get scolded and just don't give a ****, causing trouble, for them, is worth the consequences.
