Nintendo is planning "further updates."

One of the Nintendo Switch's most popular games, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, will continue to get more updates, Nintendo has announced. Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo's head of software development, confirmed this in a Twitter video. Unfortunately, he didn't have much to say about specifics.

"There will be further updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so please look forward to it," he said.

Fans would surely love to see more characters and courses, but it remains to be seen what the new updates will include. We'll report back with more details when they're announced.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 9.22 million copies as of March 31, which makes it the second-most commercially successful game for the console, only behind Super Mario Odyssey (10.41 million copies sold). The latest Mario Kart 8 update added content based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You can watch gameplay of all the new additions above.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a new version of the Wii U game Mario Kart 8. Released in April 2017, the Deluxe edition features all the previously released DLC, along with better graphics and performance, and also other various tweaks and improvements. Just recently, Nintendo announced how you can use Nintendo Labo to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The next Mario Kart game is Mario Kart: Tour for mobile devices. It will mark the franchise's debut on mobile platforms, and given the size and appeal of the franchise, it could be Nintendo's next big success story. The game is due to launch by March 2019.

I would definitely pay if they added kirby as a character and a stage from Kirby's Air Ride.

please fix matchmaking... my friends and i gave up on playing it online because we can't join a public lobby as a group. we could only play together in a private match, which sucks because i don't know 11 other people with a switch. kinda sucks to play with 5 friends and 6 bots...

@joppy: you can, but we'd want to play a full 12-person game without bots

I'd be into new tracks. They should do a new cup with tracks promoting their upcoming games. Have a Smash Bros track, a Yoshi track, a Pokemon track, and either a Fire Emblem track or a Metroid Prime track.

@so_hai: Trolling here maybe?

it implies a "polished version", the best and not just comparison to the Wii U version, "complete" would imply just that "the complete version".

deluxe definition "luxurious or sumptuous; of a superior kind."

Nice try though....

@so_hai: So you think out load sarcastically too!?

Do you own it or a switch?

Not that matters either.

@so_hai

You really are surprised or confused about the term "deluxe" and the addition of DLC.

Im trying to be non hostile here!

Maybe Nintendo made a late decision to add content to the "deluxe" version, i wonder if the Wii U version will get the same DLC, i doubt it, though im pretty sure the content in the switch "deluxe" version was DLC for the Wii U. Ill have to check on my system later.

@so_hai: Well, I don't think updates are that surprising. Now...if it was paid DLC I'd think that was surprising.

@doctor_mg: Again this is a friendly reply, why would you think paid DLC would be surprising?

Work has been done to create the extra tracks etc and the "deluxe" version has the additional WiiU DLC included, this is extra switch content (i assume the DLC isn't arriving on WiiU as thats dead now), most other Dev's usually offer DLC as paid additions with some free DLC occasionally gracing our hardware.

@itchyflop:

Because the game received DLC on the Wii U, and the deluxe edition came with all of that DLC. To have DLC on what is essentially a "Game of the Year" edition is fairly odd. It'd be like Dishonored getting new DLC on PS4.

It's not necessarily "bad", but it's highly unusual. Updates aren't, but paid DLC...yeah that's a bit different.

@doctor_mg: Updates on a ported game are unusual, I would have thought.

Nah, ported games get updates all the time. Some of them are big, some of them aren't. The Switch port of Doom got added motion controls a few months after being ported.

@so_hai: im kinda understanding you now, i wonder if Dark souls will get any too for example, im not sure if it has on PS4 (from ps3) if im correct the ps3 version got :

Dark Souls™ Artorias of the Abyss on PS3

ha and if dark souls on the ps4 is the "deluxe" version does it already contain the above?

Back on topic, its nice to see Mario kart deluxe gaining some more great fun tracks and Nintendo giving it more life, maybe a second game would be even better.

:)

@huyi12: I can assume your commenting on the broad spectrum of developers on the various systems and not just Nintendo and the switch, you know not forgetting most games offer some DLC after any game?

Or do you think like so_hai and believe "deluxe" means no more or complete?

I can also assume you have never bought any DLC on any format?
