Mario Kart 8 Could Be Getting 5 More DLC Characters

Birdo was a surprise reveal as part of Wave 4 of the Booster Course.

The latest Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course wave has arrived, and it looks like there could be at least five more characters to come.

Last month Nintendo showed off Wave 4 of its Mario Kart 8 Booster Course DLC, with the very pleasant surprise that Birdo was being added as a playable character. There had been no mention of new playable characters up to that point, so it was a very welcome bonus for some DLC that is already shaping up to be pretty beefy. With Wave 4 now out, it also looks like we'll be getting five more characters, making a potential total of six (thanks, Eurogamer). If you head to the character select screen, there's a new column with Birdo at the top, and five question marks below her, which certainly seems to suggest more characters.

Now Playing: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass Wave 4 Release Date

"Two upcoming waves of DLC are still to come, featuring more returning courses and characters from across the Mario Kart series," Nintendo said in a press release with the new wave of DLC. There are a whole range of classic characters not included in the game just yet, like Pauline, Diddy Kong, Funky Kong, and R.O.B, all of which have appeared in previous Mario Kart titles. That doesn't rule out new characters though, as Wave 4's Yoshi Island course is an entirely brand-new course for the series. Nor does it rule out characters from other franchises, as there is representation from Splatoon, The Legend of Zelda, and Animal Crossing in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Wave 4 introduces two new cups to the game: The Fruit Cup, which includes Amsterdam Drift (Mario Kart Tour), Riverside Park (Mario Kart Super Circuit), DK Summit (Mario Kart Wii), and the brand new Yoshi's Island course, and The Boomerang Cup, which includes Bangkok Rush (Mario Kart Tour), Mario Circuit (Mario Kart DS), Waluigi Stadium (Mario Kart Double Dash), and Singapore Speedway (Mario Kart Tour).
