March sees FFXIII, God of War III, Pokemon, Bad Company 2 sell over 1M - NPD

Four games go platinum as domestic industry bounces back by 6 percent; DS sells 700,800, Wii sells 557,500; 360 edges out PS3.

After a dreary year that saw just one monthly increase in domestic game sales, March came in like a lion…and left like a lion. Thanks to a slew of blockbuster releases, combined sales of non-PC game hardware, software, and accessories for the month increased 6 percent to $1.44 billion, according to the NPD Group.

"In terms of total revenue, March 2010 is the third best non-holiday month on record behind March 2008 and June 2008," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier in a statement.

Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.322 million units on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.322 million units on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Hardware sales were the sole dark spot, falling 4 percent to $440.5 million. In the console race, the DS was the top finisher with 700,800 units. In unsurprising second was the Wii with 557,500 units, followed closely by last month's top console, the Xbox 360, with 338,400 units. The PlayStation 3 had to make do with fourth place and 313,900 units, followed by the PSP with 119,900 units, barely ahead of the nearly 10-year-old PlayStation 2's 118,300 units.

"Wii experienced its best non-holiday sales month (hardware) since March 2009," said Frazier, who also called out the PS3. "Sony's PS3 hardware posted its eighth consecutive month of year-over-year increases. For the first time since its launch in the US, the PS3 has four titles in the Top 10, and was also the leader in console software sales."

Sony's God of War III helped US non-PC software sales shoot up in March, rising 10 percent to $875.3 million. The PlayStation 3 exclusive topped NPD's top 10 list with 1.1 million units sold, the first time a game for Sony's platform has done so since Metal Gear Solid 4 in 2008.

That said, NPD's top 10 lists the highest-selling game software products--aka SKUs--and does not combine sales of multiplatform games. Were it to do that, Nintendo would have the top software prize with twin installments in its megapopular Pokemon series, which are ranked as the same game on Japanese sales charts. Some 1.02 million Pokemon SoulSilvers were taken, and 761,200 Pokemon HeartGolds were captured during the month, for a total of 1.78 million.

Another multiplatform release that went platinum was the long, long, long-awaited Final Fantasy XIII. Combined, the game sold 1.322 million units, moving 828,200 copies on the PS3 and 493,900 on the Xbox 360. Square Enix will likely see the latter figure as vindication for its controversial decision to bring the role-playing game to Microsoft's console outside Japan.

The month's last multiplatform platinum game was Battlefield: Bad Company 2, from Electronic Arts' Swedish studio DICE. The first-person shooter opened with a bang, selling a combined 1.276 million units. The Xbox 360 version of the game came in fourth on NPD's top 10 list with 825,500 million units, while the PS3 version trailed in eighth with 451,200 units.

Rounding out the top 10 were two perennial chart fixtures--New Super Mario Bros. (seventh) and the Wii Fit Plus Balance Board bundle (ninth)--and MLB 10: The Show, Sony's well-reviewed baseball sim for the PS3.

PS3 finally sold some software. That's good. Xbox 360 will own the next 2 months with Splinter Cell and Alan Wake coming out. Xbox 360 hardware needs to start increasing though. They should be selling at least 400K+ every month from here on out. The Splinter Cell bundle should help to do that. We might have to wait until 360 Slim to come out for it to really take charge again. I'm sure SquareEnix is very happy with FF XIII sales. Bringing it to the Xbox 360 will account for another million in sales worldwide when all is said and done. M$ needs to concentrate on more JRPG for the Japan market. They should be pumping out those type of games in Japan every couple of weeks. GoW 3 at the top is no surprise. With no other PS3, Wii or XBox 360 big exclusive out in March, I would have been shocked if it wasn't at the top. We'll see what PS3 games are on the top the next 2 months. ******************************************************************* Commander-Chaos How is the PS2 still selling 100,000+ a month!? Amazing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's dirt cheap. Even the poor people can afford it with a couple of $4.99 - $9.99 games. Microsoft plans I keeping the 360 on retail shelves as long as the PS2. Should be interesting to see if their systems continues to sell 100K+ each month 3-4yrs from now.

That's all good news! FFXIII didn't do as well as I thought it would, but then again, I'm not an insta-fan of that particular game either (FFIV, FFVIII, and FFX all the way!) @clockwork_boy I heard from a friend who works at Gamestop that they are planning on phasing out all their PS2 merchandise. Don't know for sure if its true though.%Pr

@isredel - oh trust me, I didn't make the comment because I thought Pokemon was the better game.... infact, I haven't played either so I can't say anything on that. I just find it hilarious that it outsells FFXIII when it cost probably a quarter to develop. Some people (and not aimed at you Isredel, many others on here) just don't get the funny side of stuff like this and just take it as an attack on the game they obviously like.... all the FF-ers in here really ripped on Rottenwood for his comment, and there was no need. At no point did he rip into FFXIII at all, he merely pointed out factual statistics and saw the funny side.

@SicklySunStorm It makes sense though because more people have DS's. Also, Pokemon, being a lighter RPG than FFXIII, appeals to more people. Gold and Silver are also considered by many the best generation of the series, so no doubt many people wanted it for nostalgia. Don't get me wrong, I love pokemon, just it didn't do better because it's a "better" game. (Putting it in quotes as I think pokemon and Final Fantasy are far enough apart in RPG structure and audience that they can't be properly compared.)

The best thing that can happen for the gaming industry is for games to all go cross-platform, (well as far as between 360 and PS3) that way, different consoles will have to compete based on their own merits and will put more money into developing better consoles that will push the boundaries further for games, rather than relying on the appeal of their exclusives. On the other hand, scrap what I just said and buy all consoles and live happily ever after.

@Rottenwood - dude that is totally hilarious, I see what you're getting at. How much will FFXIII have cost to develop, versus how much the two new Pokemon games cost - especially as the Poke games are mostly remakes.... quite hilarious that Pokemon can still outsell FFXIII, don't you think? I do(!) ha ha

good to see so many games doing well. I kinda think that the PS3 should have sold more units due to GoW3 and FFXIII alone.

Grats to the PS3 for its first ever 4 games in the Top 10. Be very interesting to see if it takes the month when the Top 20 is released. I've only been tracking since 2008 but the PS3 has never had more titles in the Top 20 so this seems to be their best shot.

BBC2 (battlefield is one word) *when playing with a squad of friends/people who talk to each other* is by far the most intense first person shooter I've played on-line since the original Quake. jk, but the game is amazing. 3 cheers for the industry!

@squidracerX u don't get it do u? MS pulled the plug for xbox live for the original to enchanse the current Xbox live for 360. Sony is still supporting the PS2, which is a pain for us PS3 owners because we wont be seeing PS2 games on the Playstation store as long as PS2 is still out there. I think it is the right time for sony to pull the plug for the PS2, and start focusing on the PS3, besides, PS2 sales are sloppy now-a-days, the time couldn't more right than now.

I think xbox final fantasy sales were good, but with all trash talking microsoft was doing saying that it would sell more on 360; and all the ads and hype that they put out ( seriously almost every commercial i saw about the game had the 360 logo come up at the end), you'd think the numbers would have been closer. i think microsoft needs to stop talking and focus on making great games. i also think video game players are getting worse every generation. i have been playing games since 1980, it used to be everyone who played games were "gamers" now they're being replaced by fanboys who argue over VIDEO GAMES! A HOBBY! i've never seen two stamp collectors argue over who makes the best stamps. REAL GAMERS PLAY VIDEO GAMES NOT ARGUE ABOUT THEM!

@supersonikk yeah not only is PS3 either selling more or selling equally to the 360 at "home" every month, (then whomping it in Europe and Asia); but Sony also sells 100,000 freakin' PS2's here a month which is crazy! Xbox shut down Live for original Xbox yesterday, but Sony still supporting the PS2 all these years later, those fans will take note and be buying PS3's 10 years from now.

GoW 3 deserves more. No console bias, no bull, it is quite simply (in my own opinion, don't care what anyone else thinks) the very best I game I have ever played since I picked up a Spectrum all those years ago in 1982..... I'm not saying it's perfect because no game is, but I can't think of a single game ever that has given me so much joy to play.

@thisranks Well, let's see... Final Fantasy XIII: 828,200 (PS3) + 493,900 (360) = 1,322,100 Pokemon 1,020,000 (Silver) + 761,200 (Gold) = 1,781,200 Since you're the one who knows how to add correctly, please correct the obvious math errors I must have made here. Actually, this leads to another question, since I know next-to-nothing about Pokemon: why did the silver one outsell the gold one by so many? Isn't gold better?

Ah fanboy wars... People need to learn to have a nopen mind in gaming and play all systems. @rickiej There are millions of ways to play the Pokemon games. With almost 500 pokes and countless ways to train each one, theres ALWAYS somethign to do. Yeah they are getting a tad repetitive, but with the addition of wifi battles in D&P, the series was revamped and set for multiple releases after. They recently announced Black and White, 2 all new Poke games to be released in the fall in Japan. :D

@Darkages04 and all you other X360 fanboys saying "Hahaha the Xbox 360 is still outselling the PS3!": These sales numbers are just for North America. Worldwide, the PS3 is outselling the Xbox 360 by 50,000 - 100,000 units EVERY WEEK. Just look it up, I suggest you go to VGChartz. How do you 360 fanboys like that?

@thisranks....you realize that if you add up the two Pokemon games, they really whooped FFXIII's butt, right? Um. I know this is teh internetz, but you need to lrn2add correctly. Seriously though, 1,020,000+761,200=1,781,200 for Pokemon and 828,200+493,900=1,322,100 for FFXIII. Never underestimate the overwhelming hoard of retarded, addicted Pokemon fans who will continue buying the exact same game over and over.
