Manhunt 2 receives AO rating

ESRB tags Rockstar sequel with Adults Only initial rating; Take-Two now exploring its options.

Earlier today, the British Board of Film Classification gave Manhunt 2 a thumbs down, banning it from sale in the UK due to its "unremitting bleakness" and "casual sadism." Now it appears the Entertainment Software Rating Board is ready to hand down its own most restrictive rating to the latest controversial offering from Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games.

A Take-Two representative told GameSpot today that the ESRB has issued an initial rating of AO for Adults Only to Manhunt 2. While not an outright ban, the rating would severely limit a game's sales potential, as most major American retailers have chosen not to carry games rated AO.

As for the reason this is only an "initial" rating, when the ESRB rates a game, it notifies the publisher 30 days prior to publicly releasing its decision. This gives publishers unhappy with ratings the chance to either modify their games and resubmit them for a second assessment, or go before the ESRB's appeals board to challenge it directly.

"We believe the process of rating video games is to help people make informed entertainment choices and not to limit them," a Take-Two representative said. "Manhunt 2 was created for mature audiences and we strongly believe it should receive an M (Mature) rating, aligning it with similar content created in other forms of media. We are exploring our options with regard to the rating of Manhunt 2."

While Take-Two doesn't agree with the idea of an AO-rated Manhunt 2, one parent watchdog group believes it's only appropriate. Earlier today, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood demanded that the ESRB give Manhunt 2 an AO rating, saying that "harmful effects of ultra-violent video games on children will be magnified by playing them on the interactive Nintendo Wii system."

The group's announcement contained a statement from Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, who explained, "The content of Manhunt 2 and the unique physical interaction with the Wii control combine to take [the game's simulation] a level closer to reality--we can expect that the effects of this experience will be even greater."

The group directed like-minded individuals to contact ESRB president Patricia Vance with their concerns, and Vance today issued her response.

"We have received the letter from CCFC and, while we might take issue with some of the statements made within, we sincerely appreciate their expressed concerns," Vance said. "Our ratings are intended to provide guidance that allows parents to choose games they deem suitable for their children, and that is a responsibility we take extremely seriously."

Manhunt 2 is currently slated for a July 10 release on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Wii. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

kids arent suppose to be playing M rated games anyways, so why is this such a big **** deal... people need to stop **** about kids playing games, and watch what they buy... a kid under 17 cant buy M rated games by themself, so why is it that we care so much about children and this game... watch what your **** kids play if your so scared, dont make the rest of us suffer for your retarded kid and his ADD being effected by a **** video game he shouldnt be playing

The ESRB is designed to help parents select appropriate games for their children to play. It aids parents, it doesn't replace them.

so the wii remote is more likely to make people imitate the in-game actions? but Cooking Mama hasn't churned out better chefs, and Trauma Center 2 hasn't made any new surgeons!

I don't agree with banning it, but giving it an AO rating is a perfect solution in my opinion. The game is shaping up to be one of the most violent, disturbing games ever released. Now that you have to act out the murders using the Wiimote doesn't help. Definitely keep it out of the hands of children.

Why was this game released on Wii when the majority of Wii owners wouldn't be able to buy it. makes no sense at all.

I agree with LessthanLuke. The only people that would complain about this are the people who can't buy it because of the rating. Which is exactly what the rating system is supposed to do.

Why don't they grow some balls and release it anyway? There's a first time for everything! Releasing it will open the floodgates for more AO games-and really, aren't there a lot of us adult gamers these days?

Why's it matter? Only adults were supposed to be playing it anyway. This just ensures that fact. The only consumers this will upset are the ones that shouldn't be playing it anyway.

There's a big difference between 17 and 18 years old, so I take my hat off the ESRB. Of course now that it has an AO rating, I really want to check out Manhunt 2. I mean, if the first one got only an M, this one must be swe-e-e-et.

a game this bloody deserves an AO rating.....im 14 years old and i played the first manhunt thinking that the game was just creepy.....i soon found out how gruesome and sadistic this game is.....i felt sick to my stomach after killing someone with a shard of glass. i dont mind blood and gore, but this is just wrong and it rightfully remains in the AO category because only adults should play it.....some games actually deserve it

If the game did deserve the rating then I think this a good move by the ESRB. It will give them some more integrity so they don't have politicians all over their backs about government regulation. Then again maybe there will be a hidden mini-game in it and they'll be mad that the ESRB didn't make a rating higher then AO.

These people make it sound like the only way to keep kids from playing this game is for the ratings board to give it an AO rating. Whatever happened to parental supervision?

Good. This is why we have the ESRB. Too help keep disgusting, disturbing, and potentially dangerous games out of people's hands. We cannot just let parent's take care of things. They simple don't do it, most of them anywhere. Don't get me wrong. I love violent games, and I don't think any game should ever be outright banned. But Manhunt is too much mindless, and ultimately pointless violence, and should not be in the hands of anyone, kids or adults.

yes because they are making these games FOR children! thats why it says 17 and up. i mean we make it so easy for a child to drive to a store ask the clerk to give them a copy of a game they would see as scary and would not want to play. the clerk would say "no you need to be over 17" its just that easy for a kid to get a game. of course these commity groups pay no attention to the fact that a child CANT buy these games, nor would they want to. all they see is video games= small kids will get these game so we need to ban them just because ignorrant parents will buy their child these games.

I can agree with the rating, but it sucks with how places generally don't carry AO games. I mean, come on! What's the difference between carrying a game for 17+ and 18+? It's just a one year difference! It's not like we accumulate so much knowledge and understanding in 1 year alone. Oh well.. at least it isn't exactly Hot Coffee all over again. I say that with third party mods (even if it's unlocking material previously unreachable that's coded into the game), the terms of service and rating should go right out the window.

This is no shock. The US and UK agencies are constantly giving each other reach arounds. One country's government can't do anything without the other responding in kind.

I wish the ESRB would have followed Britian and Ireland's lead, but I guess this is better than nothing. Hopefully this will keep it out of the major retail stores and ultimately out of consumer's hands. Nobody will benefit from playing this kind of garbage.

The AO rating is completely and utterly useless. Give the game an M rating and move on ESRB.

Doesn't matter to me what it is rated i'm still old enough to buy it, if its that violent maybe its a good thing that it has such a strong rating. Maybe parents won't buy this for their kids because of the AO rating. I think this is a good step from ESRB, they are doing what they are supposed to be doing (which is keep these types of games out of the hands of children)

Considering the content of the game, I do feel that an AO rating should be given. Yes, it is a good game with a good story but the bottom line is that you are committing gruesome killings. Slashing people with shards of glass, decapitations and the like aren't like what you see in Halo 3. It's a truly disturbing game and it should be Adults Only. I don't know what it means to Canadians like myself. I'm guessing they will carry the game at EB and Microplay but they will not have the copies in plain view. Still don't know if I'll buy it for the Wii or PS2. Waiting for reviews.

Let's say they do rework it and take some content out, I wonder if the Wii version will still be rated higher just for the fact that you act out the actions.
