Manhunt 2 receives AO rating

ESRB tags Rockstar sequel with Adults Only initial rating; Take-Two now exploring its options.

Earlier today, the British Board of Film Classification gave Manhunt 2 a thumbs down, banning it from sale in the UK due to its "unremitting bleakness" and "casual sadism." Now it appears the Entertainment Software Rating Board is ready to hand down its own most restrictive rating to the latest controversial offering from Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games.

A Take-Two representative told GameSpot today that the ESRB has issued an initial rating of AO for Adults Only to Manhunt 2. While not an outright ban, the rating would severely limit a game's sales potential, as most major American retailers have chosen not to carry games rated AO.

As for the reason this is only an "initial" rating, when the ESRB rates a game, it notifies the publisher 30 days prior to publicly releasing its decision. This gives publishers unhappy with ratings the chance to either modify their games and resubmit them for a second assessment, or go before the ESRB's appeals board to challenge it directly.

"We believe the process of rating video games is to help people make informed entertainment choices and not to limit them," a Take-Two representative said. "Manhunt 2 was created for mature audiences and we strongly believe it should receive an M (Mature) rating, aligning it with similar content created in other forms of media. We are exploring our options with regard to the rating of Manhunt 2."

While Take-Two doesn't agree with the idea of an AO-rated Manhunt 2, one parent watchdog group believes it's only appropriate. Earlier today, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood demanded that the ESRB give Manhunt 2 an AO rating, saying that "harmful effects of ultra-violent video games on children will be magnified by playing them on the interactive Nintendo Wii system."

The group's announcement contained a statement from Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, who explained, "The content of Manhunt 2 and the unique physical interaction with the Wii control combine to take [the game's simulation] a level closer to reality--we can expect that the effects of this experience will be even greater."

The group directed like-minded individuals to contact ESRB president Patricia Vance with their concerns, and Vance today issued her response.

"We have received the letter from CCFC and, while we might take issue with some of the statements made within, we sincerely appreciate their expressed concerns," Vance said. "Our ratings are intended to provide guidance that allows parents to choose games they deem suitable for their children, and that is a responsibility we take extremely seriously."

Manhunt 2 is currently slated for a July 10 release on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Wii. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Ha Ha! I was right! I knew the game was going to be AO! I'm on a roll today. Either way, this will give the Wii a lot more publicity than it already has.

I wonder how many Americans will be spouting on about their freedom in this news post, like they were in the UK one. America; the nation of freedom... in certain retail outlets.

At least it's better than what the UK board did...ESRB strongly warned consumers about the game, while the BBFC didn't even give let them a chance to decide if they wanted it or not.

Why is it every time Nintendo gets a more mature type game, it falls through. Now I bet they super-edit it to meet the M rating and a huge reduction of blood.

"harmful effects of ultra-violent video games on children will be magnified by playing them on the interactive Nintendo Wii system." Well DUH! This game is ABSOLUTELY NOT WHATSOEVER meant for CHILDREN at all! That statement is just stupid. Again, this gets stated a billion times, it's up to the parents to stop their kids doing anything that might physically or mentally harm them.

Maybe the steady of diet of mini games has affected the ESRB Wii testers minds.

Good thing i'm 19, Woot! I guess it's for the best considering the extreme violence, although it's pretty funny how you can watch movies and read books with "extreme" violence all at the age of 17.

well first off I think its really unfair what they are doing to take 2, they just looking for somebody to blame if they keep the AO and release the game then i want to see nudity everywhere, and the worsed gore i have ever seen.

I doubt people even play these games, they just make assumptions on what the media make of them. Maybe they do, but banning it in the UK is not the way to stop people playing a game.

tenorio_rotc: "Dude, what is the difference between AO and M? THis is dumb. M should be liked rated R and this game clearly fits into that like any other gory slasher film. They need to stop holding games to higher standards." The difference between AO and M is that the game becomes more restricted in where it is able to be sold, and how it's able to be purchased. You wont see it in mainstream rental stores either. This largely removes it from the market where kids could buy or rent it in situations where their parents either don't know or don't care. Even the parents who do buy their kids games with higher ratings will take notice when they find out it's AO rather than just M. It's a good decision, I think.

I never thought I would see the day a game on a Nintendo system would be banned and or given an AO rating, weird times indeed. If indeed the game keeps an AO rating then it should be for all three versions of the game not just exclusive to the Wii because of its controls. The more controversy this game builds up the more people will want to buy it, so congrats ESRB and BBFC, youve just jumpstarted the advertising of a game you don't want to be sold.

Wow, they're really trying to limit the sales of Manhunt 2. It seems like a cheap shot, since they know most retailers won't want to carry an AO-rated game. Take-Two is going to have to fight the system somehow.

I'm seeing two versions being available. The AO version sold online only in July and a second watered down M version available in August or September.

I've got to admit, I didn't have much motivation to play the first Manhunt other than seeing all the gruesome death animations. It was really just violence for the sake of violence.

The only problem here is that retailers were dumb and won't sell AO rated games. I agree with the rating but don't agree with the retailers not selling it. Expect a delay for the game to be changed.

What does it matter if it's AO or M? Either way only adults are allowed to buy it. So why not just make it M so stores will carry it? Anyone with me on this?

restricting a game of their fullest potential is not kosher gamers will be pissed. i say give it an M rating with the content it already has and keep your kids away from that game. Parents, do your jobs and take care of your kids.

Wtf, M rating is 17+, AO is 18+. Does it even have any nudity? 17+, doesn't that mean parents shouldn't buy it for their kids anyway. It's the same thing as letting yor kid watch an 18+ movie.

THis is so stupid, if retailers like walmart and best buy didnt go "family friendly" it wouldnt even matter, the diff between M and AO is only one year, either your 17 or 18. I dont care if it comes out as AO i will just order it, because that is what ever other kid will do, it hinders but doesnt prevent the spread of the game.
