Manhunt 2 receives AO rating

ESRB tags Rockstar sequel with Adults Only initial rating; Take-Two now exploring its options.

Earlier today, the British Board of Film Classification gave Manhunt 2 a thumbs down, banning it from sale in the UK due to its "unremitting bleakness" and "casual sadism." Now it appears the Entertainment Software Rating Board is ready to hand down its own most restrictive rating to the latest controversial offering from Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games.

A Take-Two representative told GameSpot today that the ESRB has issued an initial rating of AO for Adults Only to Manhunt 2. While not an outright ban, the rating would severely limit a game's sales potential, as most major American retailers have chosen not to carry games rated AO.

As for the reason this is only an "initial" rating, when the ESRB rates a game, it notifies the publisher 30 days prior to publicly releasing its decision. This gives publishers unhappy with ratings the chance to either modify their games and resubmit them for a second assessment, or go before the ESRB's appeals board to challenge it directly.

"We believe the process of rating video games is to help people make informed entertainment choices and not to limit them," a Take-Two representative said. "Manhunt 2 was created for mature audiences and we strongly believe it should receive an M (Mature) rating, aligning it with similar content created in other forms of media. We are exploring our options with regard to the rating of Manhunt 2."

While Take-Two doesn't agree with the idea of an AO-rated Manhunt 2, one parent watchdog group believes it's only appropriate. Earlier today, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood demanded that the ESRB give Manhunt 2 an AO rating, saying that "harmful effects of ultra-violent video games on children will be magnified by playing them on the interactive Nintendo Wii system."

The group's announcement contained a statement from Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, who explained, "The content of Manhunt 2 and the unique physical interaction with the Wii control combine to take [the game's simulation] a level closer to reality--we can expect that the effects of this experience will be even greater."

The group directed like-minded individuals to contact ESRB president Patricia Vance with their concerns, and Vance today issued her response.

"We have received the letter from CCFC and, while we might take issue with some of the statements made within, we sincerely appreciate their expressed concerns," Vance said. "Our ratings are intended to provide guidance that allows parents to choose games they deem suitable for their children, and that is a responsibility we take extremely seriously."

Manhunt 2 is currently slated for a July 10 release on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Wii. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Why are people so upset about the system working exactly as designed and not giving the government one more reason to try to come in and regulate the industry?

The ESRB sucks. They used to say that sex was the only way to get the AO rating. not just sex but extreme sex scenes like hot coffee but now the ESRB has wussed out because of parents and jack thompson

I hate how games are deemed to have such bad effects on children. Its marked M that means its for MATURE audiences. Not kids!!! If a parent is dumb enough to get it for their obviously poorly parented son/daughter and they are mimicking what they see its the parents fault no one elses. An AO rating is lame. Saw, Hostile, Texas chainsaw massacre were movies that only got R ratings. This game will be no worse than any of those. Kids have just as much access to DVDs as they do to games, in fact DVDs are only 15bucks and games are 50-60 so I'd say its easier for them to get their grubby paws on a dvd than a game. They should just give the game a M rating like it deserves instead of going overboard with the AO rating crippling its sales potential. Its garbage how bad they bandwagon on games, don't see why its so hard to comprehend that games are not just for children. Adults play games, im 27, I have a 4 year old, she plays DORA I play GEARS OF WAR. I wouldn't let her play it. Its simple parenting. She isn't old enough for the subject matter so I keep it away from her. You won't see groups of angry mothers boycotting the release of SAW 4 or HOSTILE 3 but wait til GRAND THEFT AUTO comes out. It will be on capital hill being crucified. Thats my rant for the day....

Why shouldn't it be allowed on the Wii? Why can't games continue their evolution?

Why ban a game when the parents should have watch over what the kids buy? If a parent doesn't want their kid to buy the game, they should just tell them to put it back on the shelf. It's not like the parent must buy the game the kid asks for.

I think it's ironic when people curse to deny that video games can adversely affect your mind or make people violent. I agree with you guys, but there are much better ways of expressing your thoughts.

t0tally agree with u -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- fattyxboxbutt AO isnt a rating, its limitation on freedom of expression and the free market. M is a rating that says this product is for people over 18, informative and fair. AO tells retailers not to sell something, instead of letting the public decide if they want it or not.

If it is AO appropriate then i think it should stay that way. the problem i have is that most retailers don't carry AO games. That is what makes me angry. Retailers need to check ID's for M and AO games 100% and sell AO games. There will always be that employee who forgets to check IDs or is just dumb and doesn't check them.

I honestly think an AO is appropriate. M games are treated far to casually as there is such a huge variance amongst M rated games in terms of content. Some aren't really that harmful, such as some of the Tom Clancy games. Others are filled with far more damaging content such as the GTA series and most certainly Manhunt. Now only adults will be able to purchase it and parents won't see it on shelves and mistakenly buy it thinking its alright. Those that really want it can still get it and those that shouldn't play won't be able to.

I say take a chance on an AO game. It might not be found in Wal-Mart, but we will find it one way or another if it's good. Maybe it would open more doors to this type of market?

Does this make anybody else want to play this game? Holy crap man...I have never heard of a game getting an AO rating for violence right off the bat. This thing has been banned too. Either this game is going to disgust me or make me laugh, either way I'm in.

Whatever the outcome, I hope Nintendo stays out of it. I don't think they need to rekindle the fire started with the SNES version of Mortal Kombat 1, which some people still haven't gotten over.

My question is why on earth did Take-Two think the Wii would be a good fit for Manhunt 2? Aside from that, opponents of videogame violence obviously have their target, and Take-Two receives the bulk of the criticism no matter what the content.

I think the AO rating should just be completely abolished, it's pointless in my opinion. I mean, what is the difference between 17+ and 18+? I think Mature should be the absolute highest rating ESRB offers. Nevertheless, MH2 should get an M rating anyways - but apparently this world is still in the anti-violent video game hysteria....

Release the AO version over the web and to those stores that will carry it. Sell a toned down version, note it on the box and in game, to everywhere else, with a sticker on the box showing the website to buy the AO version.

Looking at thier options???? How about leaving it a AO rated game? There are not enough AO rated games out there.... I want it violent as hell, and an AO rating makes me think it's on the right track. Leave the AO, don't change the game....

honestly, i would rather see a game receive an ao rating for intense violence than for sex (aka gta:sa). brutally murdering innocent people always seems worse than pixelated sex. that doesnt mean im happy about manhunt getting an ao rating but i certainly understand the reason.

There have to be standards and limits. Would you permit a minor to watch Ichi the Killer? Hopefully not, and that is the reason why ratings are there. It's not about being facist.

Well nobody has to wonder if the games is going to be available to children as most places won't even carry the game. I bet they release a toned down M-rated version and also release a "special edition" of the AO-rated version.

Im still confused about why something that is designed for adults is being criticized for its potential effect on children. Meat grinders and chainsaws are extremely dangerous for children to play with, but we expect people to keep these things out of the hands of children while adults use them for legitimate purposes. Does it make sense that adults are only allowed to enjoy forms of entertainment that are considered "safe" for children to enjoy as well? If the child safety argument was in effect in the 50's, Lolita and Ulysses would still be banned right now.

If you can find independent gaming stores, then an AO rating is ok. Otherwise, Take-Two is going to have to find a way to tone down the violence to the ESRB's satisfaction for an M rating.

After Hot Coffee, you would thin think that Rock Star would error on the side of caution. Question: How can a company like Take Two have one of the hottest selling games of all time and still post losses? Answer: Lapses in judgment like this.

"I wish the ESRB would have followed Britian and Ireland's lead, but I guess this is better than nothing. Hopefully this will keep it out of the major retail stores and ultimately out of consumer's hands. Nobody will benefit from playing this kind of garbage." This is the kind of response a fascist would make, seriously. Who are you to say who gets to play what?

True, parenting is a big part. The rating is a separate issue though. The ratings are there so that parents can see what the game is all about. Not every parent knows every game that is being released.
