MAG Hands-On Impressions

We blast our way through Sony's ambitious online shooter.

The 256-player online shooter originally announced as MAG: Massive Action Game has since had its name trimmed of the cut-and-dry subtitle, but the scope of the game remains just as enormous as when news of its existence first broke at E3 2008. For Sony and developer Zipper Interactive, the team behind the bulk of the SOCOM series, that means living up to some pretty lofty claims. After visiting Zipper's Redmond, Washington studio last week for a chance to meet with staff and go hands-on with MAG, it looks as though they're well on their way to living up to those promises.

As you'd certainly expect, MAG has proven to be an ambitious undertaking for Zipper and Sony. Not only have they elected to build a new game engine from scratch, but they've also had to design a network infrastructure that will be key to making sure that these giant matches run smoothly. Zipper and its partners have been working for the past few years on this brand-new server system, culminating in full-capacity testing beginning in late 2008. Since then, it's been a balancing act of keeping smooth visuals that run at a minimum of 30 frames per second while maintaining a serviceable connection for all players. With the framework in place, next on the agenda is a public multiplayer beta, which several Zipper employees told us is a necessity to test their system under real-world conditions.

Although the tech behind MAG is breaking all-new ground, the game's setting sticks a bit more closely to first-person shooter traditions. The game takes place 20 years in the future, in a time when world powers have begun relying much more heavily on the use of private military contractors to fight their battles--what Zipper refers to as a "shadow war" of PMCs against PMCs. That lays the foundation for the game's three factions: the sleek, high-tech Raven; the burly, camo-covered Valor; and SEVR, a group of ragtag fighters adorned in makeshift armor. Each has its own distinct look, from clothing to weaponry, as a way to help players tell friend from foe on the expansive battlefields.

Get ready for some pretty huge firefights.
Get ready for some pretty huge firefights.

To keep those battlefields from getting too chaotic, Zipper has organized each team in such a way that there are multiple layers of leadership to help guide you along. Each match has a pair of 128-man armies, which are divided into 32-man platoons and 8-man squads. You've got a leader at every one of those levels who's capable of dishing out to his subordinates orders that can expand on or differ from the overall team goal. These are called FRAGOs (fragmentary orders) and include objectives such as destroying gates or antiaircraft guns, or what have you. The penalty for disobeying your commanding officer? Nothing. But the benefit is drastically increased XP, which you'll use to unlock all manner of goodies in the game's focus on persistent leveling and rewards.

So what exactly does a 256-player match feel like in action? Sadly, we can't say. Our hands-on time with MAG was set on one of the 128-player maps, with closer to half of the maximum number of players actually playing, a decision that Zipper made for easier coordination among journalists and testers. But even at a fraction of the game's capacity, the match was impressive in scale. The map was huge, and between all of the distant gunfire, parachutes dotting the sky, and splinter battles, there was a lot going on.

The controls offer zippy movement and don't feel far off from the Call of Duty games. You can choose from a number of kits that all include a primary weapon, a pistol, a knife, grenades, and specialized gear such as a medic gun or repair tool. We tried a number of weapons, including an assault rifle, a submachine gun, a light machine gun, and a sniper rifle. With so many players, we didn't survive long with our original run-and-gun tactic; we had much better luck simply going prone with a sniper rifle and picking off parachuting enemies. (Call us dirty spawn campers if you like, but players are given a number of spawn location choices.) Overall, the core gameplay seems pretty accessible and straightforward. Most of the depth looks like it will come from teamwork and getting to know the ins and outs of each map.

Maps of varying sizes will be offered for when you can't get a full match going.
Maps of varying sizes will be offered for when you can't get a full match going.

We played a mode that challenges one team with sneaking into enemy territory and stealing a pair of heavily armored vehicles within a particular time limit. There was discernible flow to the action as one team pushed deeper into the other's side, though with the number of players out there, the fighting was divided into lots of little pockets. To help get a better feel for what's going on, you can pull up a slick overhead map that shows an isometric view of all buildings, and icons for enemies, vehicles, and points of interest.

If you were hoping for MAG to turn the fundamentals of the first-person shooter genre on its ear, you'll likely wind up disappointed. But if you were looking for a familiar approach to shooter gameplay on a ridiculously huge scale, you're in luck--it seems that's just where MAG is headed. We had a fun time with it, but we're eager to experience a full-capacity match to see just how intense it will be. You can expect plenty more coverage on MAG leading up to its release in late 2009.

It looks fantastic but it doesn't really seem to bring anything new to the table. Still seems to be worth a look though.

@Tora_Kuo BF 2142 tried to do this on small scale where exp was gained fastest through the commander giving competent orders and squad leaders following oders as well as using voip to communicate. As I remember this almost never worked, even with 16 players aside, mostly people ignoring orders, dumb commanders and rogue squad mates. They're gonna have one hell of a time getting FRAGO to work properly and competently.

@AncientDozer That's the question that Zipper addressed in the GI piece I was talking about. They took a cue from the military in that all squads will have a squad leader, 4 squads to a platoon, 4 platoons to a company, each element has it's OIC (Officer In Charge), and those leaders will have experience in the game (In order to be a squad leader, you have to prove yourself as capable of the position). So long as people look to squad up, sure, it'll work. The people looking to run around solo are going to get fragged the easiest. The game is about tactical teamwork. And each squad is going to have its own objectives, handed down and scripted by the team at Zipper, through the chain of command from your Generals to your squad leaders to each man of the squad. I just think it's way too objective based in the online matches to degenerate into a slug-fest. People aren't going to want to lose just because they couldn't complete objectives even though they had the larger amount of kills. Plus, completing objectives gives you experience perks, and working together is the only way to accomplish this, really. So the teams that dedicate themselves to actually working well together are going to be more successful and level harder and faster than those that don't. That's the theory, in any case.

They will have to balance certain gameplay elements (spawn camping, match length, lag, etc.) for it to be successful. But if they can pull it off, man oh man!

Its about damn time our PS3 stomps Xbox 360. I mean seriously for like 2 years sony has been suffering because it didn't have the games. Yet had plenty of hardware. Then developers went to xbox 360 bc its easier to work on. Since games like Little big planet, MGS4, Heavenly sword, and of course Killzone 2. Developers are now noticing that sony can do far more the xbox can even imagine. I mean to even run MGS4 on the xbox it would need 5 disc's and it still couldn't run it. Then xbox is waving its money around by making the DLC. PS3 deserves this game because at least they being innovative and not waving their cash around.

New dedicated servers are going to assist with the game play a lot with that many people. That's the first thing that Zipper is doing differently than every other FPS on the scene. And not just a couple, but literally a farm of servers. Not going cowboy will keep things on a comfortable level. It's well known in military circles that two gets the job done, going solo gets you dead. Stay (relatively) close to your squad and support each other. Your squad leader won't be random. They'll be someone with actual experience in the game. Someone that has proven to make sound tactical decisions. Also, a new algorithm has been developed to seek out anomolies in the game-play to minimize the cheating too, so that is a feature that should be beneficial. Work with your team, and you're going to accomplish things. There are experience perks for using your kit the right way for the objectives. Having various kits (you can save up to three custom kits - yes, I said custom) means you can also swap them out as you reach different objectives. Initial push, you carry a rocket launcher, reach a forward spawn point and switch kits to a CQB method. I wonder if you can do so at a spawn point SBFII style, or if it'll have to be frag yerself to get a different kit? lol C.O's will be able to speak to one another and strategize via private channel also, according to Game Informer. They also got some hands on. This game does look sweet, but it's going to remain to be seen if it will live up to the goals they've set. From what I saw in GI, it's not got any plans to go multiple console, or go to the PC. But withhold judgment, really, till you get an opportunity to play the game. I think it looks pretty sweet, but I haven't played it either. I just know what I've read about it.

@ Elduque21 That game is produced by SCEA, developed by "sony property", Zipper Interactive (Mechwarrior 3 to it's belt), and it's NOT coming anywhere near PC, and certainly it's not coming to the 360. Sony wanted to have a sucessful game like that, but not available for the 360 or PC to attract online FPS veterans to its console. First Killzone 2, now MAG. They already have MGS4 and God of War 3 to attract fans of those franchises, and there are a LOT of them. If you would like that game for a PC, you would have to have a great rig to run it, much more expansive than a PS3, so go complain somwhere else.

This game looks cool, but it seems like the only thing different about this game compared any of the other Shooters out on the consoles already is that it sports 256 players. Which I personally think is too much to be a comfortably played game.

It's a big mistake if they leave this only for PS3, a lot of Call of Duty players may play this as well if its good. Hopefully they'll be smart about it. I don't think this will encourage people to buy a PS3, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

@Devilboy96744 Are you serious guys? I can't believe you kids are actually saying this wouldn't run on any other platform. The only thing stopping this from being on something else is the Operating system is it created for.. which would be Sony's operating system. Its absolutely ridiculous for anyone to say this wouldn't run a PC considering the performance of a decent PC blows the ever living hell out of the PS3. Be realistic when you bash cross platforming. Stop showing your company loyalty and understand that all it is.. is a computer with multiple processors. Stop acting like its the Holy Grail or some mysterious machine. Damn.
