Now Playing: GS News Update: Madden 17 Will React to Colin Kaepernick's National Anthem Controversy

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's decision to sit during the national anthem during multiple NFL preseason games this month has been one of the most-discussed stories in all of sports. Madden NFL 17 will be updated throughout the season with new commentary from Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis, to reflect real-world happenings, and this includes Kaepernick's decision. An EA Sports representative confirmed this with GameSpot today.

"Kaepernick's decision will be briefly mentioned in-game, reflecting our commitment to authenticity in Madden NFL 17," a senior publicist for EA Sports said. "Overall, our new commentary will mainly center around on-field performance, as well as major news like trades, free agency signings, and injuries.

The QB sat during the national anthem before the 49ers preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Friday. He did the same for his August 20 game against the Denver Broncos. He told NFL media that he did this as his own form of protest over the treatment of "black people and people of color" in the US.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," he said, according to GameSpot sister site CBS Sports. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

49ers coach Chip Kelly said, according to ESPN, "We recognize his right to do that. So, it's not my right to tell him not to do something. That's his right as a citizen."

Not everyone has agreed with Kaepernick's decision. Former teammate Alex Boone, whose brother served with the Marines in Iraq, said Kaepernick's decision not to stand was "shameful."

"You should have some f---ing respect for people who served, especially people that lost their life to protect our freedom," Boone said, as reported by ESPN. "We're out here playing a game, making millions of dollars. People are losing their life, and you don't have the common courtesy to do that. That just drove me nuts."

Kaepernick has said he will continue to sit during the national anthem until meaningful change occurs.

The EA Sports representative did not provide any details on what the Madden NFL 17 commentary team will say or when the update will arrive. Week 1 of the NFL regular season is still more than a week away, with the first game starting on September 8. The 49ers don't play until Monday, September 12, against the Los Angeles Rams.

As the EA Sports spokesperson mentioned, Madden NFL 17 is striving to have its commentating feel more authentic this year. It's doing that by bringing in Gaudin and Davis to the studio regularly throughout the NFL season to record new lines that will then be patched into the game. The thinking is that if a player or a team has a huge week, or some major off-the-field event happens, you'll hear about it in the game. This will further your immersion, EA claims, helping "blur the lines between a game of Madden NFL and a real NFL broadcast."

Though the regular season hasn't even kicked off yet, EA has already updated Madden NFL 17 with new dialogue from Gaudin and Davis to reflect the performance of players in the preseason.

It remains to be seen how many mid-season updates Madden NFL 17 will get, the extent of them, and how many instances of off-the-field issues will be added. A further layer of the Kaepernick situation is the politics at play. Whether or not Gaudin and Davis will use their platform to make any kind of statement (which would presumably need to be given the green-light by EA) is unknown, but we'll find out soon when the commentary update is released.

Davis tweeted this image below earlier today, showing himself and Gaudin in the studio presumably recording new lines for Madden NFL 17 that reflect what happened in the NFL's third preseason week.

This of course isn't the first time that the real-world actions of an NFL player have affected a Madden game. In addition to the regular ratings updates based on actual performance that happen, EA Sports has in the past removed players like Aaron Hernandez and Ray Rice after off-the-field issues.

Screw that anti-American racist. I hope he gets censored from the planet. Won’t stand for the country that gave him a million dollar career that most Americans dream of? The WHITE American family that adopted and loved him because his black one bailed?? He should be taking both knees to Uncle Sam. Ingrate.

He’s not kneeling for a “good cause”...he’s a follower and tool for the black supremacy hate group #BLM.

For those people who are calling him ignorant because he's an NFL player, you obviously didn't hear his interview (hint: ignorance). He clearly mentions that even tho he himself clearly isn't oppressed, he's using his platform to raise awareness for the cause, which he has every right to. He's not class-less, un-American or a disgrace for using one of the freedoms he's supposed to guaranteed, especially if its an issue he feels compelled to support.

Tons of athletes have used their platform to help raise awareness and its doing a lot more for the cause then the street confrontations with the cops that we see all over the news. Nobody's dying or getting hurt, and it's not illegal, so let the guy do what he feels compelled to do!

No particular stake in the issue, but I don't see why he's bashed when his intentions are good and is at least trying to make a positive change in society (whether he actually is is another story).

@Divad222: he’s not protesting anything but white Americans. His “cause” is a lie. What does celebrating this great country have to do with excessive police force?? (A country that gave him a great career that most dream of)

He is simply raising awareness to an issue that he feels is being ignored. Guess what, it's working because all of you people are here talking about it on a game forum. Except a lot of you are stuck on Kap sitting, instead of standing. Take focus on the true issue here. Other minority sports figures have done similar things in the past, only there was no internet filled with people who think they are so perfect they can troll others freedoms.

@medafor: awareness? What a joke. He’s protesting white America. What does thumbing your nose to your entire country have to do with oppression. (Btw, his entire career and good family life was due to the whites he hates)

@medafor: they are nothing but fake patriots. Half of them are just flat out racist and the other just plain ignorant. You can disagree with him sitting for the anthem but if you don't get that America does not and has not lived up to the ideals of the song then you are part of the problem. A lot of fake patriotism flying around when half of them wouldn't give a homeless vet a dollar if they saw them on the street

Says he's being oppressed by the country he lives in but is getting paid millions of dollars to play a game by the country that is oppressing him. Love ignorance.

@rumadbrah: Show me where he said he specifically was being oppressed.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,"

A pretty general statement. Nothing about him saying he's oppressed. If you actually know what ignorance means, you'll know that's exactly what your exhibiting.

@Divad222: If my eyes don't deceive I believe KAP is a person of color so that being said just because he doesn't say it directly doesn't mean he's not or feeling that he is. It's definitley not a coincidence that KAP says he won't stand because a race is being oppressed when he is that race that he just said. Like I said ignorance is bliss.

Im starting to think that all of the "hyper patriotism" is cover for cowards. You all are afraid that maybe there is some truth to what he is saying and instead of thinking for a moment that, that may be the case you start spouting rascist and unfounded fox news "facts". The fact is and I know this is a hard word for you "patriots" to understand, is that most people on welfare work. why do you think a mother would be upset at losing childcare???? You as$%^ are whats ruining this country. If you cant handle people expressing their consitutional rights without resorting to threats and racism maybe you should leave!

Mediocre quarterback whose career is falling apart. He's simply desperate for attention. Surely he must see the utter hypocrisy of a rich athlete claiming to be oppressed. Or maybe he is that dumb. Will EA update the game so every stadium boos him?

Minutes ago I read a story about a black single mom upset that state funding for free daycare for her two year old child has been cut. I think he defines being "oppressed" the same way she does: not being given free shit to make up for your own poor decisions.

Meanwhile here's Kap posturing to claim retaliation when he gets cut for not earning the tens of millions he's making.

Avatar image for mark5225

@youre_a_sheep: I agree on the fact that waiting for handouts is a poor excuse of living but don't get the color thing twisted. A lot of people regardless of race milk the system hell most people enter the military for free handout cuz they f'd up in high school and never seen combat trust me I've been in the military and now work for the US government in VA. Also you talk free handouts while whites get free handouts in court after they rape someone like the idiot in MA and Stanford.

Avatar image for ewjiml

@mark5225: "Most enter military for free handout." Yeah that's just completely untrue. There's a difference between wanting a handout and earning your handout...which turns into benefits. Trust me. I've been in the military...

Avatar image for mark5225

@ewjiml: whatever you say dude I've done more work as a civilian wgs9 worker than being in the marines. Maybe that example was bad but by saying blacks wanting handouts for daycare I've known many marines that drank and bs their way through the military with occasional work we praise all vets where some are not sh;5 and deep down you know I'm right and have seen them too if you were truly in the military. To flip out over a person not participating in a song is just as stupid as his cause. To label a race as entitled to free stuff is just as offensive as me calling all whites as entitled in court when they rape girls and go unpunished

Fame, fortune, health, endorsements, a job that is basically playing a game; Must be awful to be so "oppressed". Poor old Kap, let's all feel sorry for him.

Avatar image for deactivated-5ae060efb3bf6

He should try staying in China or any country in Africa for a few weeks and see how much better it is here. And see if he is allowed to disrespect the freedoms he currently enjoys.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c1c32e0b8cc8

I don't blame him at all. In fact, I support his decision. This country is getting worse by the minute and I'm embarrassed to stand for most of what we've become.

@jayskoon93: this country is getting worse? You must have a very close-minded view of the world my friend. Funny how the freedoms this country offer seem to be taken advantage of by the very same people bitching of the "problems" we have. Racism exists everywhere. Name a country that treats blacks and other minorities better than we do. Where minorities get to earn millions of dollars for entertainment or pursue education. First world problems. Pat Tillman is leagues above Krapernick because he valued this country above a multi-million dollar contract. Krapernick shits on this country while taking that million dollar paycheck every week this "country" provided him. It's not our fault he's a loser. That white couple that raised him must be out to get black people.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c1c32e0b8cc8

@ewjiml: Yes, THIS country IS getting worse. I said nothing about the world as a whole. Yes, racism exists everywhere, but it's also a HUGE problem here. From what I've read, I take it as he's not happy with the country's values and what the majority of our population rules as important. And that last sentence was quite odd. I have no idea why you felt that was necessary to add that?
