M3gan Sequel Will Explore "The AI Universe" Even More

In real life, AI is a big, scary topic, and the highly anticipated sequel will push further into that space.

The spooky and unsettling movie M3gan is getting a sequel, and its story will dig further into the world of artificial intelligence. Producer James Wan told Empire Magazine that it's still early days for the M3gan sequel, but he said "M3gan is coming back in a big way."

"The first film came just at the right time [when concerns about AI were mounting], and we're definitely leaning into that on the next one. We're exploring the AI universe even further," he said, as reported by Collider.

M3gan is about a super-advanced mechanical doll that comes to life and kills people. It's a story that's been told many times over, dating back decades, but with the proliferation of artificial intelligence these days, the idea of a robot rising up and killing us is maybe more concerning.

Just this week, US President Joe Biden signed an executive order pertaining to AI, calling for safeguards to be put in place for the technology. Biden also recently watched the newest Mission: Impossible movie, which made him even more worried about AI.

Beyond the possibility of AI coming to life and killing us all, experts fear that AI is an extinction-level concern similar to nuclear war.

M3gan had a reported budget of $12 million and earned more than $180 million at the box office, which is to say nothing of its success on home video for its distressingly gory version. M3gan hails from the horror studio Blumhouse, which had another big recent success with the record-breaking Five Nights at Freddy's movie.
