Lumines squares away half a million

Famed Japanese producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi's PSP game big in Europe and America, but numbers from Japan are a bit puzzling.

TOKYO--Tetsuya Mizuguchi's first PSP game has been a successful hit so far, with more than half a million units shipping worldwide since its release in Japan last December. On his personal blog, Mizuguchi revealed that Lumines has sold more than 550,000 units worldwide, with Europe being a major contributor to the figure.

Though it's only been about a month since Lumines was released in Europe (alongside the launch of the PSP in that region), it has already sold an impressive 180,000 units, and it seems possible that sales in the region could eventually eclipse the 300,000 units sold in North America since March. However, sales of Lumines in Japan have been relatively slow, with only 70,000 units shipping in the past 10 months.

Mizuguchi is currently working on his second game for the PSP: Every Extend Extra. For details on the game, check out GameSpot's hands-on impressions from this year's Tokyo Game Show.
