Luke Skywalker Could Be Gay, Mark Hamill Says

"Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves."

Not long after Star Wars director JJ Abrams said the franchise will eventually get an openly gay character, series actor Mark Hammil has spoken up about the possibility of Luke Skywalker being gay. In a recent interview with The Sun, Hamill said the iconic character's sexuality is undefined and open to interpretation.

"I just read online that JJ is very much open to that," he said. "In the old days you would get fan mail. But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, 'I'm bullied in school... I'm afraid to come out.' They say to me, 'Could Luke be gay?' I'd say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer."

He went on to say: "If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves."

This isn't the first time Hamill has spoken on the subject of Luke's sexuality. He reportedly sent this DM to a fan on Twitter earlier this year who asked if the character was bisexual (via EW).

Hamill will appear in 2017's Star Wars: Episode VIII, directed by Rian Johnson. The film was previously scheduled to launch in the summer of that year, but was recently pushed to December 2017.

Filming recently begun, while the movie's working title has also been revealed.
