Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon dev now working exclusively with Nintendo
Looks like Next Level Games won't be doing Captain America: Super Soldier 2, then.
The studio behind Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is now going steady with Nintendo.
"We are doing only Nintendo products now," said Next Level Games co-founder Jason Carr in an interview with Gamasutra.
"We have worked with a lot of other companies before, and we're super happy with our relationship with Nintendo," continued Carr. "There's no reason to look anywhere else. They keep giving us better and better IP to work with, and as long as we do our job and make good games for them, there's no reason for us to venture out."
Talking about the size of the studio now, Carr described it as a "small shop" of under 70 employees. "We like that size," he said. "For us, we're like, why would you want to go and talk with these other guys? What's it doing for your business? The guys in the company are just really, really proud of the company and proud of the games they work on."
Next Level Games is best known for its work with Nintendo, and alongside the Luigi's Mansion sequel the studio was behind Super Mario Strikers and the Wii remake of Punch-Out.
Outside of working with Nintendo, the studio worked on the altogether less famous games Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, Transformers: Cybertron Adventures, and Captain America: Super Soldier.
At one point, Carr explained, Next Level Games was a lot bigger and was composed of four teams. "We were about 115, 120 people," he said. "We just ended up making shitty games, really. We spread ourselves way too thin. It wasn't fun. I didn't know everyone's name anymore. We lost a little bit of that family kind of culture feel, so it wasn't great for us. Paring back down to a two team company... one and a half, whatever... 70 people, depends on the game, right? For some games these days, that's half of a company."
