In an announcement today, Lucasfilm clarified its approach to the Star Wars canon as we approach the launch of the next trilogy of films. The stories told in the Expanded Universe--which consists of games, books, comics, and so on--has always been considered non-canon, distinguishing it from the main content found in the six movies and the animated Clone Wars series. While elements of the EU have found their way into the main series, series creator George Lucas has made it clear in the past that his works would not be stuck abiding by anything in the EU.

Now, in the wake of The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, changes are being made. With the help of a new story group that will oversee "all Star Wars creative development," today's announcement states that "all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected."

No Caption Provided

That means that all Star Wars media released in the future will be part of the official canon, which will continue to disregard anything in the existing EU. New novels from Del Rey Books, as well as the upcoming Star Wars Rebels TV animated series, will be among the first releases to tell new canonical stories. "While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe."

A Lucasfilm representative confirmed to GameSpot that future game releases will also be canonical. This includes DICE's Battlefront and Visceral's new Star Wars game being written by former Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig and Uncharted actor Todd Stashwick. Both games are being published by Electronic Arts, which signed a multiyear deal to produce Star Wars video games in 2013.

The recent delay of the latest expansion for another EA title, Star Wars: The Old Republic, is unrelated to today's announcement. The Lucasfilm rep told GameSpot, "[A]s far as The Old Republic MMO is concerned, nothing is going to change. [TOR] has always been a part of the Expanded Universe, and that's not going to change."

What do you make of these changes to the franchise? Are there any parts of the Expanded Universe you wish were considered canon? Let us know in the comments.

Makes no sense how TOR is even remotely close to the EU. That stories from 3000 years before the battle of Yavin could affect the new movies is preposterous. And if they do, you should want to include them. KotOR was a better story than any of the prequels could ever dream to be.

And are we seriously taking TCW as canon? That show is so ridiculous. What happened to that amazing cartoon Clone Wars that came before this baby show? That was some quality right there. And no weird words like Moraband. Seriously, is that some music group? Korriban just sounds better. And not just because of nostalgia goggles, the hard K sound makes it sound rougher. Ugh, it's things like this that make me happy George can't touch Star Wars anymore.

So what does it mean for existing "non official canon stuff" that is yet considered unofficial canon (I mean - all the stuff that's out there on Wookiepeida)

This scares me a bit b-cause it sounds like "we now can screw up all the canons that are not the movies & the clone wars"

For example with these new rules they can make a canon that says Darth Revan was a dark side female, or, hell, say that he didn't ever exist, and at that time a totally different events took place... Hope they won't.

I think that b-cause Star Wars got so much love from the fans and community, any company shouldn't be considered Star Wars franchise owner - instead it should be the legacy of the community...

If they 're going to make Star Wars as crappy as Bioware did Mass Effect 3, they 'd better let it rest in peace.Although I know Electronic Arts did not develop Mass Effect 3, just published it, they 'd better be careful with what they publish.

I've been thinking and this worries me a bit. If going forward all new games are going to be canonical and they don't consider existing games like KOTOR cannon, then what are the chances of them making a sequel to such a game whos events in their eyes didn't happen?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well it doesn't necessarily invalidate anything specifically, contrary to the article (as I understand it), it just means that anything going forward will be canon, even if it contradicts extended universe stuff. Which is to say, the EU is up in the air until either validated or invalidated by future properties. Something like KOTOR shouldn't necessarily be seen as canon or non-canon until something newer either includes it or contradicts it, and considering how popular that is, there may be a good chance its events will be respected, but we just have to wait and see.

So lets just discount the Timothy Zahn books and the countless other really great novels. The first Zahn series was so good that it should be made into movies. I just don't like that Disney is just discounting the hard work of some great writers. I just hope they don't screw up these films like they did with the Star Trek series.

I'm actually happy for this. What I'd really appreciate is if they tried to tie some of the old stuff into the new and make everything work. It's probably too much to ask...but we'll see what happens.

I have faith in Disney. they have had a really solid 8 years now, and they show no signs of letting up. They have taken risks, and let creative talent run the show for the most part and it is paying off. While a few stumbles here and there, Tron and John Carter (I actually really liked both movies).

My BIGGEST worry is J.J. Abrams. After he fucked up Star Trek: into Darkness with his lack of knowledge and letting Orci and Kurtzmann run wild with that bullshit script, I have zero faith he can craft a Star Wars movie I can enjoy. And I am a guy who liked the prequels so I am easily entertained.

This canon thing is a good idea. But I get the god awful feeling Abrams is going to try and give us "fanservice" by throwing in popular "reimagined" Expanded Universe characters.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Tell that to the Cars and the Planes series (merchandise). Not to mention the influx in prince/princess and fairy-tale themed films again. They haven't been that big on them since their Renaisance era (and pre). Disney is very much in economy mode. Solid yes. Risks not so much.

I would do one of two things if I were Disney:

1.) Make a well publicized announcement that Episodes 1, 2 and 3 are expanded Universe failures and not in any way, shape or form are they going to maintain continuity with any part of them but only use the original trilogy as a root source to be respectfully meshed into a good fit. Furthermore I would plan to follow the sequels with an all new prequel attempt, acknowledging the original trilogy as sacred, and the prequel trilogy ignored all around except for an occasional reminder of how awful it was and how trashing it is 100% the way it's gonna be.

2.) Acknowledge that Star Wars is now a dying franchise and offer it in trade to Fox for X-Men, Fantastic Four and assisted help in prying Spider-Man from Sony's control. It would make the Marvel Universe near completely restored and accessible to cross-over pursuit. Only step one above me with it's eradication of George Lucas's prequel poisons and all the dumb ideas and concepts it brought could SW be anything remotely as interesting as a fully functioning Marvel roster.

<< LINK REMOVED >>To be fair, the prequels had the right story, at least the core of Anakin´s journey, the problem was it was surrounded by mostly terrible actors (Obi Wan and Samuel L Jackson and a few other beign the exception) and incredibly stupid charcters and scenarios, and a incredibly arrogant director...

Who gives a s***. If the UE has produced the best stories so be it.

We all know that Lucas' attempt at making 3 new epic movies failed. If he or anyone else desperately wants to cling to the 6 movies and from now on forward being canon, it will enevitably mean that the canonical material will be worse than before. Since we are now subtracting a fair number of good entries way above the quality of episodes 1-3.

To me. Only episode 4-6 is canon anyway.
