In an announcement today, Lucasfilm clarified its approach to the Star Wars canon as we approach the launch of the next trilogy of films. The stories told in the Expanded Universe--which consists of games, books, comics, and so on--has always been considered non-canon, distinguishing it from the main content found in the six movies and the animated Clone Wars series. While elements of the EU have found their way into the main series, series creator George Lucas has made it clear in the past that his works would not be stuck abiding by anything in the EU.

Now, in the wake of The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, changes are being made. With the help of a new story group that will oversee "all Star Wars creative development," today's announcement states that "all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected."

That means that all Star Wars media released in the future will be part of the official canon, which will continue to disregard anything in the existing EU. New novels from Del Rey Books, as well as the upcoming Star Wars Rebels TV animated series, will be among the first releases to tell new canonical stories. "While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe."

A Lucasfilm representative confirmed to GameSpot that future game releases will also be canonical. This includes DICE's Battlefront and Visceral's new Star Wars game being written by former Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig and Uncharted actor Todd Stashwick. Both games are being published by Electronic Arts, which signed a multiyear deal to produce Star Wars video games in 2013.

The recent delay of the latest expansion for another EA title, Star Wars: The Old Republic, is unrelated to today's announcement. The Lucasfilm rep told GameSpot, "[A]s far as The Old Republic MMO is concerned, nothing is going to change. [TOR] has always been a part of the Expanded Universe, and that's not going to change."

What do you make of these changes to the franchise? Are there any parts of the Expanded Universe you wish were considered canon? Let us know in the comments.

Hopefully the Darth Bane Trilogy and Thrawn Trilogy become considered canon.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Darth Bane is canon.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> When he was little ya' know, was his nick then Darth Baneling?

Avatar image for SpriggsyUK

all i care about is that Mara gets made canon, if not i might kill some folk at Disney.

Avatar image for daikkenaurora12

<< LINK REMOVED >> Agreed. She is a great character. Hopefully they dont screw us over on that.

Avatar image for dani_i89

WTF is canon? And what is EU?

Avatar image for Zombies101

<< LINK REMOVED >> Too good for a google search? Just kidding. Star Wars canon is whats considered to be part of the official Star Wars timeline. Basically what actually happened in the fiction. EU stands for Expanded Universe, simply anything Star Wars related outside of the six movies.

Avatar image for dani_i89

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Thanks for that.

That just downright sucks. No more KOTOR can they do this? The Star Wars universe has so much potential, and the best Star Wars game ever made is actually well outside of the movies (KOTOR)

Wow...**** Disney.

Avatar image for dani_i89

That's what I said. The best games are well outside of the scope of the movies.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Umm read the Article:
"[A]s far as The Old Republic MMO is concerned, nothing is going to change. [TOR] has always been a part of the Expanded Universe, and that's not going to change."

The Old Republic is still canon.

Wouldn't you expect the best games to be made "outside the movies".

Any games constrained to a movie storyline are limited from the first.

Avatar image for GH05T-666

Do any of the Star Wars games let you play as Chewie?

Avatar image for Wardakhin

<< LINK REMOVED >> the old super nintendo games..

Avatar image for Poodger

I like this approach, and I am glad they are disregarding the books when it comes to the story for the sequel trilogy. The EU always felt very "fan fic" to me (which is a bad thing)

What about the KoTOR series? The Jedi Knight series(Outcast/Academy) as well? :(

Avatar image for Yomigaeru

This could be problematic. Aside from the films releasing more frequently, now we've got to worry about potentially muddied history/events/timelines due to everything being canon now.

The Old Republic stuff was really what kept me interested in Star Wars. Revan turning to the Darkside to be able to face the "true" Sith, Darht Bane and the Rule of Two...the lore just seemed so much more interesting than the events featured in the films.

Avatar image for Yuusha09

<< LINK REMOVED >> Darth Bane made his way into the Clone Wars, so he's now canon... thank god.

Avatar image for Poodger

<< LINK REMOVED >> Old stuff isn't canon, so it will be easy for them to start fresh and build up the universe outside the stories in a logical and clean way.

Avatar image for santinegrete

They better be good then. To me, only public reception turns things into canon.

Meaningless, Jar Jar is Canon so it's already meaningless.

Avatar image for hornspiller

<< LINK REMOVED >> Instead of Jar Jar being canon i would like jar jar in a canon.

Avatar image for Cryptic_Shadow

For those wondering what "canon" means;

"In fiction, canon is the material accepted as "official" in a fictional universe."

Avatar image for megakick

Star Wars is all over with place with the lore and movies fairly broken.

Avatar image for c0mmanderKeen

Apart from KOTOR and Force Unleashed (and MAYBE Dark Forces II) I never really thought too much of the storylines in SW games.

Avatar image for tomservo51

<< LINK REMOVED >> The Timothy Zahn books were well done.

Avatar image for Bhemont

The Old Republic universe is pretty much the only reason why I am interested in Star Wars, if that's not a canon, then star wars is a dog poo, especially after they made the cartoon, and LOL Unleashed.

Avatar image for mrhappy702

What? Darth Bane, the rule of two, etc. is technically not considered canon? What a bunch of crap.

Avatar image for Poodger

<< LINK REMOVED >> It never was.

Avatar image for ravenbeast

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> What a bunch of crap indeed. Why create all those characters and events and connect them to the movies if They r not gonna be part of the canon. I take Darth Bane & Zannah a thousand times over Vader and the Empire anytime. the Comics & books have done a much better job than the recent movies, games and the series.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> x7, he is! TCW is regarded as canon and Bane was there, so it makes his character and his Rule of Two canon. But the books about him are considered as legends.

Avatar image for x7c8r9

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>No he isn't anymore.

Avatar image for Yuusha09

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Darth Bane is canon, don't worry about that.

Avatar image for Yuusha09

Really thought that the light side endings to KOTOR and the first TFU were canon. Could've sworn GL said that... but oh well.

Avatar image for ArchoNils2

I would elcome the change. Most SW games this gen were average at best.

Avatar image for tunaface

Canon? Short for "can(n)on fodder"?

Avatar image for jeffcleasing

I feel it would be wise to allow any game under the EA flag to be part of canon soley because EA has full licensing rights to sw games now. That would allow both KOTORs and the current TOR to be considered canon, and not interfere with future movies. Also I'd be cool with the concept of TFu to be canon and TFu2 to be stricken from record

This is disappointing...

Avatar image for burtonboy05

It's a strange one, I've read pretty much all of the EU post ROTJ and only a little of the pre episode 1 eu. Some of it has been brilliant Timothy zhan, Michael stackpole with the some it pure filth Kathy tyres amongst others.

I've invested a lot of time in these books and as a fan of the original films I've accepted it as a continuation of the original trilogy. I think I'll still view it that way, regardless of what happens with the next 3 movies. I just hope they turn out half decent.

I guess if they are trash I can always fall back on the eu.

Avatar image for Hillsy_

Oddly enough, SWKOTOR is still the best Star Wars game to date. Great story and characters.

Avatar image for deactivated-57bac25e99ee3

<< LINK REMOVED >> Either that or Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast; even though it came out ages ago, that game truly did deliver on the promise of free and fluid use of force powers and lightsabers.

Avatar image for bluespire1

I never liked the Ewoks ...and hated Jar Jar Binks

Avatar image for jalisdaboss

<< LINK REMOVED >> , I never asked for your asinine opinion about the matter.

Avatar image for DeanoFantasy

To much use of the word 'canon'

Avatar image for abentwookie

I think they are making a mistake. Many parts of the EU would be great for games and movies, especially the New Jedi Order and Legacy of the Force series.
